Suggest me a bluray player... « Thread Started on Apr 1, 2012, 12:09am »
Folks-
Please suggest me a Bluray player, which does just what it needs to do well..
1. I want this to play my audio CDs and BDs. 2. I'm not 3D ready yet, and don't care a whole lot now. 3. I'm on a budget, and I mean it. 4. I have Roku and Apple TV to take care of my streaming needs. So, I don't want this player to have all these jazzy features.

I'll be pairing this with UMC-1.
Thanks.
Before I got my Oppo, I had Sonys that did a good job. I also now have a Panasonic BDT210 we use for the grand kids that works well.

Go for an el cheapo product and bitstream everything via digital output to the UMC-1. You should not lose anything audibly in audio quality. Anything in the $100 to $200 range that isn't completely dodgy...cheaper if you've tried it out and like the video quality. Bestbuy may be a good place to audition players.

what's ya budget
entrylevel: sony/toshiba mid level onkyo/pioneer/oppo bdp93 high end oppo bdp-95/denon/pio elite
looking at sony's today min i would buy would be a 580, though i had money to burn 780 would be the unit i'd for... if you were looking at spending $500 a room the oppo bdp93 would be an option to consider...
i run a sony 370 and entry level toshiba.. for dvd playback the toshiba edges out the sony by a slim factor, i found the sony open ended in multi region dvd, multiregion bd was a mixed kettle of fish, as long as the bd disc wasn't hard coded to region a it played fine, however if it is hardcoded to region a then the likelihood of the sony playing it is going to be a no go area...
since obviously region a is going to be your default standard region b maybe an issue if it is hardcoded to the disc.. the toshiba has a select setting bd regioning no default universal setting so far for multiregion, I found it best once set leave it set to the desired region you wish to use.. in my situation i set min to region a as my bd troubleshooter for playing region a content bd's with hard code..
on dvd the toshiba does have default multiregion setting... you should be able to set that manually..

Even low budget BD players from major manufacturers have some sort of streaming capability. Really need to know if $100 is your max or not.
I have very good luck with Panny players. I have three. One is a BD-30 which is still going strong. Another is a BD-110 that is hooked up to the UMC. I even have a Panny bluray/VHS player in the kid's room. (Yes laugh, but it actually plays my old kids VHS tapes pretty well and the bluray section is top notch.

Remember reading about Asus releasing 2 players, haven't had time yet to look them up any further but I remember that the specs were pretty good for a couple of budget players.

I have an LG BD590, This thing is really nice, it's pretty fast, cosmetically very nice looking, has great GUI setup & the quality is great.
It has a 250 Gig built in Hard Drive which makes it great for ripping music in there and save it to play. It's wireless networked allowing you to use all the streaming services such as Netflix and etc. and to connect it to your own network and play movies and music off of it.
