 More SACD recommendations wanted please
« Thread Started on Jan 15, 2012, 2:42pm »

I followed the advise in the "Currently Playing" thread and picked up Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms" SACD. Wow, I mean, WOW !

I had to do alot more hooking up. I hadn't hooked up the multi channel on the Pioneer DV 45A since we moved.........6 years ago. The only SACD I owned till recently was Pink Floyd "DSOTM" and it didn't impress me enough back then to worry about. I even had to dig out the remote so I could access all the menus to make sure set up was correct.

So, now I'm looking for more ideas for SACD's. I am mostly into rock, but I'm looking for variety too, classical, jazz, sax, I may even consider some country if you feel that strongly about the sound quality.

I have a limited number of SACD's as I prefer the multi-channel mixes, but the ones I do have sound exceptional to me in surround.

Billy Joel - 52nd Street (multi channel), The Stranger (multi channel), Piano Man (2 channel only), Turnstiles (2 channel only)

Al DiMeola - Consequence of Chaos (multi channel), Flesh On Flesh (multi channel)

Diana Krall - The Girl In The Other Room (multi channel), Love Scenes (multi channel)

The Wallflowers - Red Letter Days (multi channel)

Just bought Pink Floyd "Wish you were here" SACD. A bit on the expensive side for music, but it has always been one of my favorites, for tweeking and showing off. I used to play track 2 for showing off my subs in my car over 22 years ago, I still have the trophy to prove it.

Can't wait to here it on SACD !!

This is a link to where I found it cheapest for anyone interested....eBay prices were outta control.

Not SACD, but incredibly good album/mixing/mastering - Junior Wells "Come On In This House".

Also, bunch of DVD-As you gotta have - *Anything* by Steven Wilson and/or Porcupine Tree. Pat Metheney's "Imaginary Day" studio version - this could be the best-sounding disc ever, truly reference quality.

If you're into surround sond, join the Google Group SurroundSound and lurk for a while. Then PM Lokkerman and ask about The Hub - do NOT mention it directly on the Google Group...

Where did you get it from? $50 for any SACD is insane (but I'm not implying that you are ;D)

Any of the 7 Elton John Hybrid SACD's are really good sounding. I would start out with "Honky Château."

http://www.amazon.com/Honky-Chateau-Elto....27153750&sr=8-1

The Who, "Tommy"
Nine Inch Nails, "The Downward Spiral"
Junior Wells, "Come on in this House" $11.50 at Amazon (Excellent blues SACD for 11 bucks)

Go to Amazon and search Hybrid SACD, you will get lots to choose from and some are still at a good price.

Some are only 2 ch and some are 2ch/multi-channel. They do not always say.

I don't have Honky Tonk Chateau (yet) but I have three of his SACD releases (Yellow Brick Road, Madman Across the Water, etc) , and I concur, these are great additions to the SACD genre. All of mine are multi channel and well mixed.

I recommend the Japanese SHM-SACD of Who's Next -- AWESOME.

Miles Davis- Kind Of Blue and Bitches Brew are both great. Albert King's I'll Play The Blues For You is another great sounding one.

I prefer 2 channel for music, just haven't been able to really get into multi channel too much for music.

I love the clarity of SACDs.

Sara K.: Made in the shade (absolutely incredible recording, the best I own)

Schenk, Herwich, Hacquart: The Spirit of GAMBO (Recorded at Galaxy studios, possibly the best studio acoustics in the world)
http://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/3803

Here's an excerpt from the Stockfish website on the Galaxy studio:
For this recording, we chose a specialised room with defined room acoustics and an extreme isolation: The large concert hall of the GALAXY studios in Mol, Belgium. The complete studio complex is suspended upon gigantic steel springs that absorb low frequencies down to 3 Hz. Extraneous noise outside the building is dampened by more than 100 dB.

We installed our own state of the art technology for recording in this hall and so had the ideal ambience for the 3 types of recording configurations to be presented on a 3 layer Hybrid SACD for optimal comparison.

Rachel Podger: Vivaldi: La Stravaganza - Podger/Arte Dei Suonatori (Mrs. Podger's best from a series of outstanding recordings)
http://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/336

Yep, pretty much my top choices. Some are out of print and hard to come by, but worth looking up. Mofi, Stockfish and Channel Classics are my favorite labels.

I have the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East I like it.
I also like most of the Elton John library, Madman Across the Water and Yellow Brick Road stand out.
The Who - Tommy is good.
Pink Floyd WYWH is worth the $35 bucks easily.

Rather, I don't have Hotel California, but I do have Hell Freezes over It reigns supreme as well.

Roadster, you are sucking me in. I wil order your "bests"...

Edit
Let me add that I have a few Stevie Ray Vaughan. I really like them.

Hands down my favorite track of all time
Tin Pan Alley-SRV.
