 USP-1 metal remote
« Thread Started on Dec 31, 2011, 7:17pm »

Can someone tell me if you can buy a metal remote for the USP-1 to replace the plastic one, I don't see it on the web site. Any idea of the cost, I don't guess is a free upgrade.
Thanks

If your USP-1 came with the little plastic remote you can buy the nice aluminum remote but you will also have to send your USP-1 back to Emotiva for them to flash new codes into the front panel. Call Emotiva and ask about the cost. I don't remember what the remote sells for, but there is no charge for them to update the front panel.

Thanks for the info, I'll call them and see.
Other than the remote codes, is the new USP (metal remote) the same unit as the old one or do they update any other part of the pre?
If so, it might be better just to program a universal remote than to go with the expense of the new remote and shipping for the update?

Just an update in case anybody is interested. Emotiva will sell you a new remote and update your front panel. Price $50 plus your shipping cost since you have to send the USP-1 in.

Appreciate you sharing. It's tempting, because the plastic one is cheap looking and never worked good for me. I also like that the metal one controls the ERC as well. When it first came out I tried to get them to agree to swap me a new USP remote for my ERC and plastic USP one, but no dice! :)

Why not try a universal remote?
I've got a Harmony 1100 - works great and controls 8 separate components that otherwise would need a separate remote. I did that for a few years before getting the 1100 a month ago. Its a bit cumbersome at first but once you get used to it you won't be reaching for the wrong remote. I had a Harmony 688 before the 1100 and there is no comparison. It could control my Mitsubishi climate control if I wanted it to since it is a learning remote.

I have to say though that the solid aluminum remote for the XDA-1 is one of the nicest remotes I've ever used. Build quality is fantastic. It just sits idle now that I have the 1100 - which is built pretty well too.

Using a universal might be the best way to go. You can get a harmony 650 for $50.
I just don't understand why the cheap plastic remote to begin with. Every other component has a nice metal one.

you can also fudge it with the old UMC-1 plastic remote if you just need a backup.

I was told $75 USD but that was sending out a new panel as returning the unit (from Singapore) is not an option for me... but now I sold my ERC-1 the needs are not so much and I'm living with the smaller lighter one for now and I have 2 UMC-1 spares to boot.

I have a pile of stuff that pushes out squiggly waveforms from smaller squiggly waveforms that sometimes come from 1's and 0's.

It's wonderful to behold as long as you don't let the magic smoke out.

For the most part it just all works...when it doesn't then it's time to rub a few brain cells together and soon enough it's all good to go again.

Life is short! Enjoy the music while it plays :D

That is a good point. I think I'll do that. I've got a $50 Amazon card that someone gave me for Christmas. The Harmony 650 only controls 5 pieces, but that's enough for me. I could control the ERC, USP, TV, DVR, and have one spare.

But can you throw the Harmony at neighborhood cats?

Emotiva thought of everything.

Well Bobby, you make such a good point that I was starting to regret my decision to order the Harmony yesterday. But then it hit me: Once the Harmony is set up, it will free up four other remotes for throwing at cats! Sure the TV, Dish Network, and plastic USP remotes will be little more than warning shots, but it will also free up the ERC-1 remote. Problem solved.
