Hi,
How well would the Onkyo video and sound quality compare to the XMC-1? If there is no XMC-1 announcement soon I will concider buying the Onkyo.
Cheers.

The Onkyo destroys the XMC-1 as it stands today. So do my laptop and my MP3 player. Per hemster, the XMC-1 doesn't exist, so there is no comparison to be made. I'm guessing the XMC-1 may not be as close to what has been speculated / stated in the lounge here as some of us may have thought. That's based on intuition, but I'm thinking it's going to be a significant upgrade to the UMC-1. That said, I don't expect it until next year some time. if it comes this year, well, that's just great. So, go with the Onkyo, or something like it.

Ok, good point. I thought the components within the XMC-1 such as DACs and video chips were known. My mistake. I'll wait another month or two then go ahead and buy something available.

They are/were sort of known, and sort of not. The more I read in comments / interviews with Emotiva, the more I get the impression the XMC may be more of a departure from the UMC than was originally anticipated. Even based on what we did think we knew, I would still give the Onkyo a thumbs up for everything but detail/clarity of high frequency resolution. That's the area where my 885 (2 gens older) is coming up a bit short, and where I have typically heard Onkyo just not quite "get there" for me. It's really too bad Denon doesn't want to play in the mid-range Pre/Pro space.

I'm extremely happy with mine. No real problems to talk about, everything just seems to work. HDMI switching could be faster, but I think it is just the nature of HDMI and the mix of my components. Real dual subwoofer support and internet firmware updates are pluses. I don't use the video upscaling so I can't comment (set to pass through). Audio is certainly better than the Onkyo 707. And did I say I love my DSX wide speaker setup.

Hi, How well would the Onkyo video and sound quality compare to the XMC-1? If there is no XMC-1 announcement soon I will concider buying the Onkyo. Cheers. As others have mentioned there is no way to compare as of course the XMC-1 is not available yet. I think it will come down to what you want in a prepro more than anything else. The 5507 has most of all the latest (except HDMI 1.4) bells and whistles available now. But some do not want that and with that maybe the XMC-1 would be the better choice. The biggest factor IMO is how quickly you need or want a prepro. If you can wait then it will probably be worth it to see what the XMC-1 is all about. If not and you need a prepro fairly soon then I think the 5507 would be a great choice. I have had the 886 for about a year and I have been very happy with it . Bill

Since starting this thread I have decided to go with Emotiva. Just have to decide on which one. May get the UMC then get the XMC when available.
Cheers

Cheers An excellent plan, and one shared by many here, I believe. I think that the XMC-1 is going to be targeted to go head-to-head with the best of them. As far as basic functionality and sound quality, I feel like the UMC-1 is going to be the Onkyo level competition and the XMC-1 is going to be the Anthem/Lexicon competition. Will all the features match head-to-head? Likely not. Will the quality of audio / video presentation be on par or better with the competition? Likely so.

I am expecting to hear from Emotiva any time now on shipping my UMC-1. The original planned delivery date was April 15 but I expect this will now blow out due to the v6 firmware upgrade.
I would still like to know more about the XMC-1 if Emotiva can be more forthcoming.

damn I wouldn't it be good if it would compete with the with pr-5507 instead of being something like a bastard step child between a avr and pre/pro. lol
if they released the xmc-1 like the umc-1 I hope they'd have the sense to go with more spdif digital while do have analog digital components, I could find more use for more spdif connections..
would be nice if emo could do a 400 disc br/dvd player like sony does..
I would would opt to drop the composite connection, though I just remembered I still got a vhs player i use that is only a composite connection damn i tawt i could remove it nuts..

"analog digital"? "between a avr and pre/pro"?
Maybe I'm dense, but I have no idea what you are talking about.

digital signal over rca analog connection...
personally i prefer spdif where possible for 5.1/7.1
more spdif digital inputs are needed..

I did not see a smilie after this post so I assume you are serious. If you are happy with vhs quality then XMC-1/5507 should not even be a consideration. Granted, many do not want to repurchase Barney videos on DVD but vhs is unwatchable to me. Only connections to my UMC are HDMI.

yes actually I was serious about vhs, I still watch vhs vids from time to time, as at present some titles that I own are now out of print so sourcing dvd/br's to wacth is a moot point for me..
as for the 400 disc dvd/br player I would also like to see something like this done by another firm other that sony, owning alot of dvd's and slowly moving onto br media, I need a big capacity storage machine engine that is easily networked together..
sadly I wouldn't put kids through mental torture of sitting through a barney the dino tv series..
though I'm a anime collector at heart and still require a vhs player for that medium..

Most people have moved to networked solution for DVD/BD storage if they have large storage needs. I don't think we are going to see many more large storage BR players.
