Francisco, this is a good example for any member when posting to ask for help and advice. The more information you can provide in exact detail about your system and room, the better. In your original post you indicated that you were going to go for the Emo XPA-5 power amp and you wrote:

"..........i will use my old integrated amp (gradiente pro 2000 mk2 1978) as a pre amp.........."

Note that you said you were going to use the old Gradiente as a pre amp. You gave no indication that you might try to evaluate the performance/sound quality of the 8.3's using the Gradiente as the power amp. If I and others here had known, we would have warned you that it was a very poor amp to test out the 8.3's. Now you know that once you get the XPA-5 or XPA-2 to drive those 8.3's you will have a much improved opinion of them. ;D

(My advice is to forget the tube preamp)

* Francisco, because you're from Mexico City, and because you're a member here at the Lounge, we'll take extra care of you my friend. :)

But know this though: right now you have a pair of Emotiva ERT-8.3 loudspeakers, I truly wish you would have a good quality amp and preamp too with them.

And because a surround sound system is your goal (do you have a screen, TV?), the XPA-5 is an excellent choice as you'll be ready for that center and surround speakers down the road.

And the UMC-1, yes, but with some reservation, depending on your personal use and the other components used in combination with it, in particular Cable Box & Satellite Box for Television watching (Standard and High Def.; SD & HD).

Do you have a Blu-ray player, a DVD player?

* You are speaking perfect 'Anglais' my friend. :)

Hehe tanks for the extra care, as i said im moving pretty soon and i will get a tv a 50 inch plasma or led that will depend on the sales down here and as blue ray it will be my ps3 and if i can later an oppo 93 but keep in mind i want to listen music to specialy i would say music its my main goal and home teather is like the pluss and ill try to make a cheap music server i have and old audigy. Sound card i want to point i will go step by step and if i slow down in one point still be able to listen music as now i got speakers and my old gradiente can give music later get the xpa5 and keep listening music in stereo while i get the processor

I'm confused, the OP says his amp is from 1969. I was born in 1985, and even I have changed a lot since then. How can you be sure its the room? Did he specify dimensions? Obviously it is possible that the speakers are brand new and need time to break in. I'm not trying to come off of rude, just curious about your statement. Everything I have read, even before this forum, demand you have a powerful amp to push 4 ohm speakers. Are you sure the OP has his speakers set up right? I am interested to see what he has to say down the road.

Good luck Pantera, as I will be pushing ALL Emotiva speakers in the future. Blindly I might add. However, I have no past listening experiences to judge on. Lucky me :D

You sir have a very valid point! And for that you have my full respect.

8-) I am learning from the best! I am running out of patience with setting up my system. I live in an apartment right now. My neighbors are illegals. They usually don't have much to complain about. I think I might just set it up and let her rip! I need those 6.3s to get in stock.

Guys, I was trying to be of some help by saying just listen for a while and you'll see how good they are for a mid-fi speaker at the price point.

I've listened to my 8.3's for the last month and am finding they still sound like BOXES. The high end is muted, the midrandge yells at you and the bass is, well OK.

These are good home theater speakers but not audiophile listening quality.

The good thing about them is they are like a Nymphomaniac with power, you can just keep throwing it to them.

Glad to have the Martin Logans back in service for real listening.

I'm using xpa1's so plenty of power. Good home theater speakers

If you like it loud they do the trick.

They'll make good bedroom speakers.

Speakers are sooooo subjective. That's why there are so many brands and configurations. The musical ear is like a fingerprint I think. Everyone's different.

Haven't owned the 8.3s but I have owned the 6.1s, 6.2s and 6.3s and they were all good speakers. Still have a 6.3 as my center. BUT personally I prefer my Axiom M80s. I'm probably the only person here who does, but I don't care. I like them. ;D

Ahh, to each his own. Some people even liked the Bose 901s, if you can fathom that. ;D Each room has unique acoustic properties, so even the same speaker can sound entirely different depending on the room it is setup in. Flat panel speakers have some wonderful sounds that are hard to surpass, but they also are cursed with limitations that must be balanced out when choosing between a flat panel vs traditional cone/box speakers.

All speakers have their own strengths and weaknesses. The buyer has to evaluate which speaker best meets their expectations within their home, in their listening room, and with their combination of equipment. Some people love Panel speakers, others hate them; some people like speakers with very bright treble, other find they unbearable and fatiguing.

Choosing speakers is the single most subjective task in building a HT. The only thing that is important is whether the owner likes what he/she hears.

I too recently purchased the ERT-8.3's and can tell you that they definitely like a robust amplifier. I have a Marantz MM8003 rated at 140 WPC @ 8 ohms and I can vouch foor the fact that the ERT-8.3's 4 ohm load presents a challenge even to those fairly impressive specs. I find my volume knob well past half way to achieve the same listening levels that my old speakers achieved with 2/3's of a twist to the volume setting. That all being said that's a pretty hefty volume level that both my wife and 2 year old seldom allow, but it does confirm that these babies like power. But I can also say that after about a month's worth of breaking in they are coming into their own. And while I liked them much better than my old Cambridge SoundWorks Newton T500 Towers right out of the box, I can honestly say I am starting to love them now. Now, they'll never match the unparralled transparency and seemless imaging og a good electrostatic like the Martin Logans. However, nor will they match much higher asking price ;) I very much considered the ML's myself, but given my wife and 2 year old and our family budget...well...need I say more?

'P'ower, 'P'ositioning and 'P'atience...get those three things in balance and I think you'll find your way to true happiness with your ERT-8.3's
