I just connected all my Emo speakers to XPA-5. I notice with nothing played, just turned on with volume at 0, I could hear a hissing noise in the speaker. Is that normal or shouldn't it be dead quite?
I am a new-B in HT so not sure if this normal or not. My connection from processor to XPA-5 is using balance xlr cable and for the speaker cable, I used the 12AWG monoprice cable.
Please share your experience on this. Thank you.

Having the same problems here with my new XPA-5, hum, buzz and hiss. I've disconnected everything in the system, down to just the amp and speakers. Even tried 3 different outlets, I have 2 clean 20 amp lines straight to the breaker box with nothing else on them. Transformer hum is also much louder than my XPA-3. My XPA-3 is dead quiet on all channels when everything in the system is connected, so, I don't suspect a ground loop. Had the same problems with the XPA-2 before I replaced it with the 5. The XPA-2 had a bad capacitor board according to Nick. Maybe a trend here. I need to call Emotiva today or tomorrow to resolve and get an RMA. $70 to send it back and be without sound for 3 weeks!!!
Edit: Guess this is really an amplifier question and should be over in that section of the forum. Anyhow you shouldn't hear anything from the speakers with no signal applied. When I had everything connected to the Onkyo 707 AVR all the speakers were dead quiet with no signal.

I have the XPA-5 and the XPA-2 and don't have any special electrical setup for them. I'm not getting any hiss at all from either one.

Hmm I tried unplugging and plugging it back and now it is quiet. WOndering if it was a loose connection.

The vast majority of all noise problems at the speakers turn out to be cable related -- one way or another. Don't be afraid to call Emotiva if you are experience problems. They are very good at helping to quickly resolve whatever problem you may be encountering. ;D ;D

I'm going to try one more "experiment" tonight. Maybe a different set of cables. Otherwise 2 out of 3 are pretty bad odds.

Talked to Vincent this morning. Got an RMA number. Vincent said they would have a new replacement amp out to me as soon as they could. You can't complain about Emotiva's customer service. Otherwise, just crossing my fingers.

I was purposely listening for hiss last night after reading this thread. With the UPA-1s, I noticed there was a hiss in the speakers for about 3 or 4 seconds after power-on and then it went away.
I can't remember if I had the feed connected or not.
On the hum, they (and the XPA-5) hum at a low level all the time, feed or not. I can't notice it from the notmal listening (viewing) position, but for critical music listening with the projector off it would be better if it were not there obviously.

Update: I just played with 1 x UPA-1 disconnected everything but the speaker connection - dead silent (curious I thought), reconnected it to the reeiver and still dead silent, powered up the sub and other 3 amps - still absolute silence. I can only conclude there was an iffy connection or interference from something - I will check again after watching a movie and see. If the hum is now gone I will be VERY happy.

My hum is back - so either it starts when things warm up or it's some ambient noise being bounced around or something from another component after warm-up - the room was not quiet enough today to make a proper determination.
I may tidy things up and see where things are at more "scientifically" when the new sub arrives.

I've noticed that XLR inputs on my XPA-2 do provide a slight hiss sound from the tweeter, and depending on the speaker, it is more or less noticable. Switching to unbalanced makes it inaudible unless I am right on top of it.

Otherwise, just crossing my fingers. I got the replacement a couple of days ago. The power transformer is definitely quieter, about the same as the 3. I could hear the first 5 humming from across the room. With no inputs all of my speakers are dead quiet. When the inputs are connected I get some hum and buzzing in all channels, the loudest being the two outer channels. It's not horrible and I could probably live with it. What I don't understand, my 3 is still dead quiet and why the difference. Maybe the cables? I'm using X-Series 1 meter cables to the 5 and 2 meter to the 3. I'm going to do some measuring for lengths today or tomorrow and order a set of balanced cables from Blue Jeans Cables. I need a slightly longer set of cables for my subs anyway. Hopefully the balanced cables will cure the problem. Just a further thought: Even though the Emotiva speakers are not high efficiency, they are a tad more efficient than what I think is average, 87 dB vs 89 dB. Also the higher gain of the Emotiva amplifiers may exacerbate the hum problems. Too bad there isn't a selectable gain switch on the amps. Anyone using balanced cables if you'll please share your thoughts.

No actually, about 3 feet, yea I stopped using XLR because they also made my system sound too on edge / fatiguing for my ears. I'm hoping to switch back however once I get a pair of xpa-1's in a few months; because I have a fully balanced dac, and would like to use balanced cables down the road.

Has everyone here ruled out the preamp? And if not is the preamp using analog inputs/outputs?

Has everyone here ruled out the preamp? And if not is the preamp using analog inputs/outputs? I know a bunch of guys said they disconnected everything but for the others that are having this issue & don't think its a gorund loop issue, I'd second checking the pre as well. I had what I thought sounded like a ground loop when my HK receiver was feeding my amp but I ruled that issue out & still had the hum. Swapped to a proper pro & the speakers are silent. Guess some cheeper pro's or receivers don't have good isolation on the power supply transformer & it gets transferred on out to the power amp.
