I just bought a new AV7005 Marantz Pre/Pro. I just bought an XP2 and XP3 Emotiva amp. I also just bought 5 new XLR cables from the Emotiva website, they will be arriving soon in the mail.
Can I use the Emotiva XLR cables with the AV7005?
I read in the forum that the pins dont match up using the AV8003 Pre/Pro, is it also a no-match for my new AV7005?
Here's what I read:
I would not advise you to use "standard XLR" cable for a simple reason: Marantz AV8003 is using "european" XLR standard Pin: 1 - GND, 2 - Hot, 3 - Cold Emotiva is using "american" XLR standard Pin: 1 - GND, 2 - Cold, 3 - Hot
Please advise, I spent like $200 on these cables.

This makes no difference whatsoever. As long as pin 1 is ground pins 2 and 3 can be swapped without issue (as long as all channels are swapped in the same way, I should add.) It is similar to speaker polarity. It does not matter if red is connected to black as long as they are all connected the same way.

Just wanted to add that Marantz uses the European standard, as does Emotiva. My AV7005 and Emotiva XLR cables play nicely with my XPA-2 & XPA-5.

great to know that! hopefully my combo of av7005 + xlr + xpa-5 + Audessy will be trouble free. have read from several forums of possible problem of having -12db results when using Audessy.
wps

Congrats on your new toys. The XPA-5 is an excellent amp. I cannot see how using the XLR cable and Audessey will eliminate the -12db problem. Unless I'm missing something, this can only happen if the -12db issue is caused by using RCA cables.. Can you please elaborate on this?

Perhaps because the output voltage on RCAs is usually less than that for "balanced"/XLR?

I have the older model...Marantz SR 5003 and I did not have any issues at all with RCAs and XPA-5. Used this while I was waiting for the UMC-1. So I'm still somewhat puzzled by this idea.

I believe he's referring to the general +6db gain from XLR (balanced) over RCA (unbalanced). Thus running Audyssey could result in a -12 channel level trim if say a channel were measured at -6 with RCA. On the AV7005, that gives no room to adjust the level down for a channel because -12 is the minimum gain value. I found that out the hard way. When I went from RCA to XLR, after rerunning Audyssey my channel levels were down between -5 and -7 db. Audyssey set the surrounds to -9 after I installed the XLRs, whereas previously with RCA Audyssey set them to -4.

Are these safe, effective and MOST improperly: do/can they have any negitive impact on SQ?

She said something on the order of "maybe its the greater voltage of "balanced." I said this because I know when I connected my UMC-1 to my EP4000 pro-amp with unbalanced (RCAs) I could not get nearly the full output from the amp. I switched to balanced and I found I even had to set the input voltage to 2 volts rather than 0.9 on the miniDSP because the signal was then too strong. But I can see that it could be very different with the Marantz. I seriously consider(ed) getting the Marantz because of the extremely annoying drop outs with the UMC-1 and its refusing to update its firmware from my computer.

I am using an Onkyo PR-SC5507. When I use Emo X series RCA IC's I get -12db on audyessy. When I use Emo X series XLR I get -7db on audyessy. Just my observations to help the conversation.

wow i never came back to see the answer to my OP, its huge! Personally my experinec now with Audyssey, over 3 different receivers/preamps, is I think its useless. The variance i get in source levels is so great, I invariably just adjust the db levels for each channel for friggin everything. I just run the audyssey setup so it gets the "how many fee away the speakers are" numbers, the rest is crap.
Anyway happy to report the emotiva XLR cables are absolutely gorgeous, and work great. My XPA2 and XPA3 work beautifully. Thanks for all your help.
