it is a bitter hotter than XPA-3 all things being equal... but, don't know how does it compare with XPA-5 as I am driving 5 channels compare to three. It is no HOTTER than freaking Onkyo per-processor. You know where I am going and the way Onkyo run hot.
Nice review. Glad to see some emphasis placed on dynamics - since that's one of the biggest assets of having tons of power on tap.
Big Plus One!
( ..... Yamaha RX-V1500, Surround effects were so settled and it literary sucked...... XPR-5, wow!!! First thing was that my surrounds just came to life...... )
Other: Outlaw LFM-1 Plus sub, Gramma, SMS-1, Panny 50" 1080P Plasma, Oppo 83, Panny DMR-E85HS, Sony STR DA4ES, Furman Elite -15 DMi, Technics SL-QD33/Shure -M91HE, Mirage Omni S-8 sub
HT setup with an Onkyo PR-SC886P, MiniDSPs, custom LCRs and surrounds, an XPR5, UPA-7, and three XPA-1s. With a pair of Seaton Submersive HPs for booms.
Well my XPR-5 arrived, but the top right corner of the amp was chipped off and missing when I opened the box, so I gotta return it for a replacement.
I have a question: I currently only have 2 speakers that I can test out and it seems to be working as I get sound. I have the XPR-5 connected to the pre-outs of my Denon 4311CI receiver (only 2 rca's running.) The thing is, with my 2 front left and right speakers connected, the blue light meters on the XPR aren't working. It's just 1 blue light for each channel and it remains dormant, even with an audio signal. I've pressed the peak and meter buttons to no avail. Do I have to have all 5 channels connected on the XPR-5 for the meters to work?
Will be calling Emotiva tomorrow to request an RMA.
You've got to turn up the volume to get the blue dots dancing. And, depending on what speakers you have, you may be clinically deaf before you see one bounce.
I have my receiver set at -10 and I get nothing. Pumped it up to -0 and still nothing, for both movies and music. Did I get a semi-dud?
Speakers are PSB Alpha B1s.
Also, i'm not really happy with the condition of the actual amp, it has dirt scuffs all over the front plate and the baffle is somewhat mis-aligned to the chassis. Looks like a used or b-stock unit to me.

First of all - contact Emotiva...whatever when wrong in shipment will be handled. I doubt you got B-stock since they just started shipping...and I have never heard of Emo B-stock showing up damaged.
Second...as for not hearing anything...have you confirmed the settings of the Bal/Unbal switches? This is a common user error w/the XPA-series (which I have made myself on accident). Looking at the XPR's back, it has a similar system but with little chrome toggle switches instead of plastic slide switches. In any case - check their positions...make sure they are correct for RCA vs. XLR connectors.

You'll only get meter activity for the channels you have connected. You should get activity on 2 channels if you have 2 channels hooked up. I would suspect that you need to increase the channel level on the Denon and/or turn up the volume to get some meter activity.... Unless something is really wrong.

I'd be really surprised if you got a DOA unit.. As someone else said, check the switches and contact Emotiva. It's too early for it to be anything but new.
That's too bad that it looks beat up! Maybe Fedex/UPS is handling them poorly due to the weight (wouldn't surprise me).

The switches are at the upwards position for RCA. I tested them on the bottom position, just for kicks, and I only get sound through the subwoofer -- and the meters are the same. It's just 1 blue dot that's lit up for each channel and again, I have turned up the receiver to ear bleeding levels. For what it's worth, movies surely sound nice and clear at loud levels with this amp connected, though.
Anyway you can post a pic of the damage?? Curious to see the damage.
Yup:
Could very well be Fed Ex. I have to say, when the box arrived, the tape was really loose and not really secure, and when I opened the box, some of the styrofoam was broken and floating around, also not secure.
From what i've read about Emotiva's customer service, I have no doubt they will accommodate my issue. Just sent 'em an e-mail and will give them a ring tomorrow.
What speakers are you using? If you have a very sensitive speaker you'll go deaf before those dots move. I have a XPA-2 and to get those dots to move I'm really giving it the goose.
So the FedEx guy dropped the box. I'm not surprised. I seems that your unit is damaged and it should be returned. Have Emo tag the box as fragile next time. As others have stated, make sure that the swutch on the back is set to the type of interconnect your are using (RCA or XLR). If your speakers are sensitive, you will be barely able to get the LEDs excited unless at extreme volumes. But it seemed that your product was damaged during delivery. A lot of things could be wrong. Get the replacement and then let's talk.
Ouch!!! I've actually read that tagging it as fragile is a bad idea... and tends to invite more mayhem. The best recommendation that I've read for shipping heavy breakable things is to package it "in a way that can survive falling off the back of a truck".
I really liked the packaging on the XPA/UPA series..... I would hope that the XPR-5 packaging is at least that robust -- since it's that much heavier.
Wonder if Emotiva might end up modifying packaging to reduce shipping fatalities...
I'd love to see those shock-watch labels on the packaging... Then you know for a fact it's been abused.

Maybe if FedEx pays for enough XPR amps because their Nancy Boy handlers are too lazy to properly handle heavy packages they'll make sure to handle them properly!
The Fed Ex guy hurriedly carried the box to our front door, sweat dripping from his forehead and clenching his teeth. I guess they don't care for dolly's. Most of my experience with big shipments has been with UPS and i've never had a problem with them.
Anyways, as mentioned earlier, i'm using temporary speakers right now and they're PSB Alpha B1 monitors, I believe at 89.5dB sensitivity.
The sheer weight of the content will compromise the best of packaging. Sometimes it is just best to request express delivery. That way, the product is not unloaded and reloaded at every hub along the route. Check your routing destinations and see how many times your package is loaded and unloaded. That is the most likely cause of damage.

I've heard too many stories from Fedex/UPS employees that have seen shipments worth thousands of dollars get destroyed and nobody thinks twice..... (Not to put down Fedex/UPS). Claims aren't a motivating factor in better handling.
My experience has been - how professional your driver is a big factor in how something arrives. If he doesn't want to bring a 100lb package to your door...... He'll get it there....somehow. Drivers are sometimes gentler with deliveries to a business as well (more likely to use a dolly)
Kudos to my FedEx guy who didn't abuse my 2 Seaton Submersives (137lb ea)
