Canadian customs can only charge duties IF it is an item made offshore(i.e China and/or the Far East). If it is made in the USA and designated on the box or paperwork, NO duties are charged.
Problem is Emotiva stuff is made in China and subject to duties. One thing that would be helpful to its Canadian customers would be for Emotiva to set a much lower value for its product on the paperwork which would lower or eliminate the duties. I have been able to do that with other products imported from the US that were manufactured in China. They didn't seem to have a problem with it either setting it artificially low are just saying they were samples. Perhaps Emotiva's situation is different.
