pre/pro or reciever suggestions « Thread Started on Nov 6, 2009, 9:49am »
So I'm going to start looking at ideas or suggestions for pre/pro or a reciever to be used as one suggestions. I probably wouldn't be getting this for a little while but was just wondering what people think for the 4,000 dollar range would be good. I do a lot of HT and want to be able to tweek my step up as much as possible to get everything out of it. I would like to have something with a pretty good DAC as well due to the fact I would be using it for my 2 channel listening if possible as well as my SACD's and DVD-A. I would also be looking for something that does carry HMDI as well. I was looking at the XMC possibly but we'll see. I just want to keep my options open as well. I also do a lot of streaming media from my computer if that gives any indication to suggestions. Thanks!

I'll have to take a look at those. I was thinkin' about maybe doing the one set up with the XMC but then again I don't know. I was looking at Intregra but have never had a chance to play with one or see it in person. I also heard some good things about the flagship model from pioneer, and was thinkin' if I found one of those used down the road or the flagship Denon. I just never find any around here to play with or test to see what they can all do. I'm just willing to spend that kind of coin to get what I will hang onto for awhile and I am going to be building a dedicated HT room as soon as I get a house I like, which knowing my taste will take forever lol. any suggestions on DAC's? or are the internal ones on the machines you mentioned good? I haven't had time to go through and review to see what they have but they are sounding pretty damn nice. Thanks!

Crazyhorse,
We would be in a much better position to offer meaningful advice if we knew more about your source equipment and how you are using it; as well as, what you would like to be able to do with the system you end up with. What are your viewing/listening habits? What are your short-term goals for the system? ...and, the long-term goals? What is the ratio of movies versus music?
The more detailed information you provide, the better and more focused our advice will be. How many "zones" will you have? What is the purpose of each zone? Will you have video displays is each zone? If so, what type, size, and resolution will each display need to be? Will you system include the use of a turntable? Do you want 2-channel listening? ...in a dedicated listening room? ...or as an adjunct to your 5.1/7.1 HT?
Without this type of input from you, we are only likely to add to your confusion as to which course to follow. The Lounge has a lot of talented members who are willing and able to assist you -- if you share the requisite information.

I have an idea. For $4000, buy a UMC-1 and if you need any amps go for whatever you need in the Emo line. Then, send me a check for the difference. You'll be quite happy, and so will I.
FYI, I was looking into new pre/pro's or receivers earlier this year. That's how I found Emotiva last spring. I found a lot in the price range you mention. But, nothing topped the Emo amp options. And, it appears the UMC-1 is going to hold its own vs. most out there. It's hard to argue to buy much else right now.
Denon AVR-3806; USP-1; Denon 2930 CI; EMO XPA-2 & XPA-5; Speakers: Paradigm Studio 100's fronts, UltraCube 10 Sub, CC-470v3 Center, and Paradigm "God-knows what" Surrounds; Thorens TD166 MkII w/Low Output MC & using Head Amp in USP-1; Optima HD72 projector; 106" wall-mounted Da-Lite screen; Wii; HD Direct TV DVR...and a UMC-1 soon - can't wait to get it!

Ok so where to start. This may get lengthy so i'm sorry in advance. Well what I have for components so far is XBOX 360, Pioneer Elite DV-47AI, PS3. I plan on adding a pre amp for 2-channel as well as possibly a dedicated blue ray player such as an Oppo. my speakers currently is step up like this. I have front RTIA9's with the RTIA6 ( the center one by polk for this series). Surrounds I'm using Polk Monitor 70's which are towers but I like them, and Rears are the Monitor 40's. More likely than not these will be changed. For amps I will have the front running off the XPA-1's with the center off my XPA 3, the surrounds as well and the back surrounds off an UPA-2. What I want in the short term for right now is at least two zones, one for my primary living room for my HT. This would be going through a 46" Samsung LCD. Currently I am living in an aprtment but will be looking to move into a house in a year to 3 depending on some things. I will then do a dedicated two channel room as well as a HT room. For the short though I want two zones that would be able to be run at the same time due to when I have some parties and/or cooking things in the kitchen and have tv in there as well. for right now I will be looking to do the HT and 2 channel in the same rig, however i do have the space to make a dedicated room. I was going to be looking around for a 2 channel processor at some point. For right now I want a system that will sound great at lower volumes but also at higher. This may sound stupid but i found that some receivers sound very detailed at louder volumes but at lower it tends to fade, and this I dislike. I also would like something with HMDI as I do currently use it but also use component. I care a lot about my picture quality as equally sound. I also would like to find something that works great with streaming media as well as regular play back from SACD or DVD-A as I do listen to these formats as well. Also for the apartment I am at I would like something that has very good control over the speakers and great room correction as I don't know at first what I am going to have for a home. I will be doing the room myself preferably in an unfinished basement. This leads more to my long term. Dedicated theater room. With projector as well as tv as the main stage so that for things such as the 360 I would not run it on the projector to save the bulb. I would be possibly be looking at another zone at this point to be where the bar area would be which would be outside the theater room. For current and future I would want something with very good bass management. Currently I am running 2. a Polk micropro 1000 for music and a DIY sub for HT. I do plan on getting possibly an SVS PB 13 Ultra in the near future. I do mostly a 50/50 combo for HT and 2 channel/SACD. My music taste are about 40% eletronica/trance/dance/house music and 30% hardcore punk/screamo/metal ect. and the other 30% classical and jazz or theater recordings. I do like to do music production for electronica music but this was all done at my college's studio but I graduated about a year ago and now would have to pay a fee to use the equipment, so this would be something I would look at in the future as well. I for watching I am pretty much watching a movie every night. This is either netflix streamed from the XBox or just regular DVD or Blue Ray. Sorry that was long, but I wanted to get it all in there lol. Thanks!

well with all that stated i would choose either the future XMC-1 or the Integra DHC 80.1
We dont really know everything about the XMC-1, but it looks like we will on monday. The 80.1 is currently one of the most feature rich bang for the bucks on the market.
