OK, this might should have been posted in the newbie or stupid questions sections but it is DAC related so I think here will work.
In this thread I've seen reference to PS3 upsampling and that too is part of my questions so here goes.
SETUP: I have a PS3 connected to my Denon 3808 via HDMI. I have a DACMagic that should arrive today which I will feed music and from the DAC use analog out to my Denon.
Questions: When I have all the resolutions checked in my PS3 and stream music from PS3 to the Denon and check resolution through Denon OSD I see it is upsampled to 176k. I thought that checking all the resolutions in the PS3 would allow it to detect what resoluton you are feeding the PS3 and just pass it through but it seems everything is upsampled to 176k. Is there a way for the PS3 to just send whatever is the native resolution to the Denon without upsampling? I know I can limit the upsampling by unchecking some of the resolutions in "setup".
The reason I ask that is because the DACMagic only accepts file resolution of 96k and below so I think feeding the digital signal to the DACMagic from the PS3 would cause problems. One doesn't want an upsampled file to be sent to the DACMagic which in turn will upsample to 192k do they?
Does anyone know how the DAC in the PS3 compares to the DACs in the DACMagic?
Although the DACMagic upsamples to 192k I guess I won't be able to confirm that through the Denon OSD because the signal will come out of the DACMagic and into the Denon as an analog feed so no signal rate detection will occur, the Denon will only show "ananlog" in the OSD.

I was wondering if this would still be needed along with the XMC`s internet radio capability

Does anyone know how the DAC in the PS3 compares to the DACs in the DACMagic? The only way to 'bitstream' PCM out of the PS3 is to know ahead of time what the sampling rate is and uncheck the appropriate sampling rate boxes and set the bitmap setting to 'none'. Since the DACMagic only accepts max of 96k that is the max that should be set on the PS3 I haven't compared the two, but I'm pretty sure the DACMagic will be more preferred over the PS3 for analog out. I personally don't use the PS3 analog out... I use it for it's upsampling capability which will then gets output digitally to my receiver which does the conversion to analog.

I don't use the PS3 analog out either but am wondering what the PS3 upsampling is doing to my music. I need to use something other than USB to stream my music to the DACMagic because I have a lot of 96k music files and USB only works with 44/48k files. I was thinking I would stream from my PS3 via TOSLink to the DACMagic but don't think I want the PS3 doing upsampling.
If you have the PS3 set to 44/48k resolution and all others unchecked does the PS3 ignore 96k files or does it downsample them?
I may need a different way to stream my files to my DACMagic. I have an S/PDIF out on one of my computers but all I can seem to get out of it as far as resolution is 48k, at least that's what my Denon reports for everysong so I guess my computer sound card is only capable of 44/48k resolution.
I see some saying they use the Squeezebox duet but that only handles 44/48k files as well. The transporter will handle higher resolution files but that is around $2000.00 and I would rather replace other items in my system if I'm going to spend that kind of money.

I am definitely looking forward to this! I have close to 10,000 songs ripped from my CD collection to my Mac. This will complete the circle.
I think Emotiva should jump the gun before everyone else does and build a stand alone music streamer.
I know there are quite a few out there, but none that are really tied with a quality name like Emotiva. Just wait you will see Marantz, Anthem, B&K, etc etc making these soon enough.

Excellent. How is this best used with the coming XMC-1 (which as even more types of digital inputs asking for a great DAC such as this), or does the XMC-1 have this kind of DAC (or equivalent) built in?

Im sorry if i missed it, but I can't seem to find any specifics regarding what kind of DAC chip is in there... We wouldn't be so lucky to have something like an ESS Sabre32 would we?

Probably the Analog Devices 1955 DAC with 384k oversampling, since that's what's in the ERC-1, and this is based off of that.

Thank you very much Lonnie for the update! What's gonna be the price tag for this nice dac?

Thanks Lonnie! Very cool. What sources can this be used with? I currently have an Entech DAC that I'm using with a Squeezebox Duet. I would replace the Entech with the Emo. I'm wondering what else you can use this with besides cd.......

Don't know how this DAC sounds but looks gorgeous! Sorry for possibly silly question, is it fully balanced outputs (I mean XLRs)?

Thanks for the update Lonnie!
I may have missed it somewhere, but is there a target price range yet?

Lonnie,
Will the Emotiva DAC come with a remote control? Will all the outputs be simultaneously active? Last, but not least, will the USB port support 24/192KHz or will it be limited to 96K?

Will the XDC-1 do proper HDCD decodoning and be able to extract the full 20 bits? If it does, I would put this at the top of my sub 1K DAC list.

ZOMG! This looks fantastic! I cannot wait! This will definitely make me step up the search for the HTPC. Are all inputs independent? By that I mean can you have both OPT-1 and COAX-1 populated, or is it just one or the other? I guess what I'm asking is how many independent inputs are there? I currently need 1 for the CD player, 1 for the Oppo, and 1 for the Airport Express (or HTPC if I ever get around to it). If all are independent then I'm golden. Also, does anyone know if DACs are typically able to deal with multi-channel DTS? currently I can stream that, via Airport express, to my AVR, I just don't know if the DAC will be able to deal with it? If not, would there be a way to pass it through. Probably not as I don't see a digital out anywhere.
p.s. <crossed-fingers> for HDCD support, too!
