 GoldenEar Aon 3 Speakers
« Thread Started on Apr 3, 2012, 8:04pm »

Hi,

I just picked up a pair of the new GoldenEar Aon 3 monitors. These are seriously good speakers for the bargain price of $1k a pair. Their imaging rivals my Martin Logans.

Congrats. I want to go and give them a listen. I own the Triton Two's and love them. When auditioning them I put them up against B&W Diamonds and PBS's and the Triton's out performed the others.

Congrats! I also am a very, very happy GoldenEar owner, the Triton 3s and the Super Sat50. Seriously amazing speakers indeed. Congrats again!

I agree about the Triton Two's sounding better than the B&W Diamonds. Not long ago I was at Barney Miller's Audio in Lexington where I had them A/B the Triton Two's against B&W 802 Diamonds. The 802's sounded a little brittle on the high end to me. The Tritons just had an overall richer sound. The rep and I both thought the Triton's were superior.

Seeing what the folded ribbon tweeter has done for these speakers has me anxious to get my hands on the new Emotiva Reference Series speakers. I would love to A/B the upcoming Reference Series against the Triton Two and Three. That should be a very interesting head-to-head audition.

Funny, I compared the Triton 2's with the 804 Diamonds just yesterday at Hifi Buys in Nashville TN and very much preferred the B&W's. Just goes to show that ones preference in speaker selection is very subjective and you really have to go listen to a bunch of speakers and choose what You like. :)

Excellent response Briank 8-) 8-) 8-)

There are so many subjective variables involved in "liking speakers" that I don't place too much determinative value on the opinion of others. I usually listen for myself too ;)

Briank, I'm glad you mentioned about Hi-Fi Buys in Nashville. I forgot about them. Thanks! They are about 55mi from me and I want to listen to the Tritons again. You are right about the subjective aspect. Also, the room in which speakers are listened to.....rooms change everything. I was listening to the 802's. I would like to be able to A/B the 802's vs the 804's as well.

Yes, I agree that speaker preference is so subject you must listen for yourself to find the speaker that sounds best to you. I have had the chance to compare the Triton Two to B&W CM9 several times and even though I am not a fan of the B&W sound I did prefer the B&W CM9. If you are in the market for new speakers go listen to as many speakers as you can. You just may find that you much prefer the less expensive speaker.

They have the Tritons in the same room as all their B&W's driven by various McIntosh gear. They have some Mark Levinson monoblocks in there too but I didn't listen to them. The Tritons are great speakers, it's just that I preferred the B&W sound.

Don't get me wrong I to love the B&W's, it's just I was expecting much more. The B&W's are a very forward speaker and the Goldenears are much more laid back. I just see the price difference and sound quality in the GE advantage. Also when I went to listen to the GE Sandy Gross was there the week before and set them up, the salesman said before Sandy came and tweeked them they had them setup all wrong, I also listened to the GE and the B&W in the same room with the same gear. To me the GE came out on top and even the salesman agreed, the owner of the audio shop did not like the comparison. Since then the B&W got moved to another room.

The GE's are superb speakers, it just comes down to what you like. I totally agree with you that the B&W's are more forward and I think a little more detailed making them less forgiving of your other gear. I've heard B&W's sound both bad and great as a result of this. The GE's I think are a lot more forgiving, provide exceptional imaging, and are still detailed. I agree with you that the GE"s sound is more relaxed and laid back. It all comes down to what you prefer. I tend to prefer a more forward sounding speaker and that's why I like B&W's when driven by really good gear, with that said, I could easily be happy with the Tritons as well. :)
I strongly considered the Tritons before choosing my Selahs. The Selahs also have incredible imaging but are extremely detailed and not very forgiving. They will pick your upstream gear apart but reward you if everything upstream is great. There's so many great speakers out there, you just gotta love all the choices we have in this hobby. :)
