Hey guys, I figured I would just start a new thread for the new FW, instead of continuing on the "customer service" thread. If you haven't noticed yet, I and four other people have the new FW installed, and have been posting updates in that "customer service" thread. So I would suggest you read the posts over there first. So far, as I've been reporting, the new FW has been very stable, and has been a joy to use. I'm still kind of playing with it, and have been trying everything that I can think of to upset it, but it's been very stable I hope others will have the same experience, because this FW has been very nice to me so far. Here is what Lonnie initially posted about it enjoy... "I wish I could tell you what all I'm working on but I honestly did forget. I don't have the stuff on this computer, but I will see what I can put together. In regards to the UMC software.............I don't know if I should say anything, but I'm going to anyway. I have a really hot rodded version of the code that we have been running in house and plan to release early next week. Since we were able to resolve the bulk of the issues we were able to take a breath and really go through it and you are going to love what we have done. Audio lock is really fast, audio latch, gone, channel drop, I believe it to be gone as well and we even refined some of the HDMI handling to speed up switch times. Modified some of the code to open up the dynamic range even more so sound quality is better than before. The code I have right now is SOoooooooooo sweet. Anyone want to get their hands on it now? I'll tell you what. You will need to load in a new DSP code and new main code. So if you have already brought your unit up to 7 series code and want to get your hands on it, I will send an advanced copy of it to the first 5 people who email me. Just for those who don't know, it's lonnie@emotiva.com I'm a bad person."

I haven't been able to really test the sound quality with music or movies because I have company over right now, damn it. But, others have noticed a good improvement in SQ so far.

Jamrock... DTS HD is solid, as it was in 7.02. No center channel dropouts yet, no video or audio drops, no lockups of any kind, and it shuts down and starts up every time. I have turned it off, and back on 8 or 9 times now without any problems. It's just solid as a rock so far. No comment on all channel stereo, but Lonnie didn't say anything about that.

You can now cycle through the sound modes much quicker now with the mode button on the remote. Before, it was a little sluggish, and sometimes I would get popping in speakers, and sometimes it wouldn't lock on to a change in sound modes. So this is very nice!

Please note Lonnie's response to my post to Pauly
"The UMC seems to be just about perfect. I really can't imagine it being any better"
Hey Pauly: That's a very strong statement. So I want to make sure that you are talking about center channel drop outs, signal lock, lock speed, power down lock up & Emo-Q accuracy.
Some time ago, Lonnie mentioned about chip problem with DTS HD/MA. Have you tried anything with this codec? What about all/multi-channel audio?

Jamrock,
Just a heads up, everything you listed was addressed We wrote our own code to resolve the chip issues. We have been testing continuously for some time now and everything is looking great.

Oh if only I had my metal remote so I could try this when released......the shutdown issue is my only real occasional glitch, but the other improvements would still be awesome!!!

Well, in 36 hours I'll be leaving for Jamaica for 10 days to celebrate my 27th anniversary. Upon my return, if all goes well, I'll be having my Christmas present early. It is adorned with soft blue effects lights, brushed aluminum end plates and has a "1" in its nomenclature. Aaaaagh! This will hold me over until the release and debugging of the all-digital XMC-1. BTW, thank you Roadrunner, you wiley fellow. For encouraging me to hold off on purchasing the Yammie. Glad I listened! jamrock ;D

Don't know for sure, but if you load these two new files and not the front panle code that was released recently, the plastic remote may still work. Maybe Lonnie could comment on that.

I'm kind of wondering too, whether or not us early adopters of the new FW will need to do another update on Monday. Or is what we got last night the same as the one that will be released?

I've had some time with the new firmware and can pretty much echo what Pauly has said. There is a definite improvement in lock-on times when switching sources or when changing catv channels where there is a difference in resolution or audio encoding. Many of my BD's also show an improvement but a few still exhibit a slight delay when going from the menu to a particular track. David Gilmour Remember that Night is one such disc. Its no better or worse than it was before and may be the Sony player. As for sound quality, well, its very difficult to A-B different firmware versions but I do believe it improved upon already great sound. The reason I say this is that I normally like to listen to music at night in a darkened room. Daytime listening for some reason just never seems to be as enjoyable for me. This afternoon I tried several BD concerts and a few DVD's as well as some CD's. They all sounded great. I couldn't get myself to stop so I just kept listening. The Eagles:Farewell Tour 1 is only recorded in standard DTS but its done very well. It sounded better than I ever remember it and although I set out to listen to just a couple of tracks, I ended up listening to nearly all of it. The aformentioned David Gilmour was also very nice as was the only CD I tried. An HDCD of Dire Straits. I wonder if I would noticed this if Lonnie hadn't mentioned it but for whatever reason, I really enjoyed what I heard today. Maybe it was the temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, the position of the moon and stars. Or maybe it was the new code. Now I'm very much looking to giving it another go this evening with the some of the same and some different material. All in all, I found it to be a very worthwhile update and I'm looking forward to what everyone else thinks when its released.

Oh!, BTW guys, I need your advice on this: I have 3 subwoofers (2 Ultra 12s and a Velodyne SPL 12). I intend to use a X/bal audio splitter for the Ultra 12s and the U/bal s/out for the SPL-12. Would this present too much of a load on the sub/out since it is mono?
If yes, give me an alternate way to connect all 3 subs. Thanx

Thanx jamrock Did you mean to say connect the two Ultra 12 subs to the XBAL and the SPL-12 to the UMC-1's RCA sub out? If so, you have nothing to worry about. Lonnie has said that all the outputs on the UMC-1 are buffered and each is capable of being split 4 or 5 times without degrading performance.

OK, here are my personal findings with the "Hot Rod" firmware:
1. The audio sounds "fuller" to me. Richer. A noticeable (not necessarily "major") improvement. VERY NICE!
2. Channel separation also seems a little more pronounced. My cats keep following the sound as it switches from speaker to speaker, which they did not seem to have noticed previously. (Did I just really use my CATS to demonstrate an improvement with the firmware?)
3. The glitch I had (a couple of other memebers also reported it) where going from, say, optical audio to HDMI caused a complete and unrecoverable drop in audio, is now fixed. I've been going back and forth for a couple of hours and no problems. Although it does take about 3-5 seconds to lock on to HDMI.
4. Video lock on pass through went from 5-7 seconds to a pretty steady 2-3 seconds. For some reason, on Auto I never had a problem. It locked on pretty quick. So I did not notice any improvement on Auto.
5. In about 3 hours of watching DirecTV, which was the only occasion when I would get a split second audio drop (never had audio drops from ANY other source), I've had no drops. Let's see if this is permanent.
6. The only issue I can think of: Still can't get PLII to "stick" as my default for MULTIPCM. It keeps going back to All Stereo. I can still manually select it, however.
This is looking very promising for the next release.
Great job by the Emotiva staff!!

I'm assuming he didn't want us to share it otherwise it would've been posted somewhere. Sorry but I won't pass it along without Lonnie's blessing.
