I tried to do the update with a PC laptop that I have, but to no avail. Tried 3 times in fact. I'm sure it's the PC, it's older and has issues. I did get it to update to the 7.04 awhile ago. I may try again since I just reinstalled the factory software and am ready to get rid of it... The dropouts aren't the only thing, I don't like how long it takes to lock onto an HDMI signal, I don't like Emo-Q, I don't like the lack of delay when using the triggers, I don't like the OSD, but I do like the sound quality, and that's what keeps me going back. I'm tempted to go back to the receiver/separate amp solution with the flagship Onkyo... I used to have the TX-NR906, and it worked flawlessly. I secretly wished I never got rid of it. I love dealing with Emotiva, and I just bought a set of 6.3s on clearance and 4.1s for new surrounds, and they sound great... I just really am done with the UMC. I know the XMC will be great, I'm just tired of compromising on performance. I go on vacation next week, maybe that's all I need;)
Why don't you send your UMC-1 to Emotiva and let them install the latest FW update, free of charge. They will also bench test your unit to make sure everything is working properly. Many of the items you listed as bothersome have been corrected via the new FW.
By the time you get back from vacation your UMC-1 can be updated with the latest FW and checked for any other issues. You can ask they return it on a specific date to coinside with your return from vacation. I would sure be tempted to do that under your circumstances. Good luck.

"Do I really need the XMC-1" is sort of like asking "Do I really need that Porsche 911?" or "Do I really need that Tag wrist watch?" No, you don't NEED these things. But you want them, you really do.

Does Emotiva pay for shipping if you want them to update the FW? If they do that certainly is a excellent service .

Emotiva will pay for return shipping. The customer pays for shipping it to Emotiva, but they will allow you to use their rates with FEDEX. I believe it is $15 from the zone I live in. It might be slightly more or less depending on the shipping zone you live in.. When calling in for the RMA just ask to use your CC to pay for FEDEX shipping; and you will be able to print the shipping document from the internet. Typically, once the package arrives at Emotiva it gets turned around in 24 hours.
The last time I sent a component in for repair, actually updating the front panel microcode on the USP-1, I shipped the package on Monday and received in back on Thursday. Janna was going to charge me the $15 for shipping to them, but I reminded her that this was to fix the IR code overlap problem between the UMC-1 and the USP-1 and Emotiva paid shipping both ways.

For warranty repairs, you pay to ship to Emo, and Emo pays to return the unit. Nevertheless, if you live outside the USA, it still can be a costly affair

rr,
Thats still a great deal. Especially if one has issues loading the latest UMC-1 FW that is working quite well. If I still had the UMC-1 it would probably be the route I would need. I'm not the best around a computer .

Yeah, I don't understand the procedure for them. Sometimes they mail, other times they ship. After the fiasco I had with my card, mine is safely on file now.

Must be it literally depends on who's packing/shipping the box. Apparently there is no standard practice they use when shipping.

It is kind of odd that there isn't a standard procedure for the disbursement of the upgrade cards. As one member recently posted his card was hanging out of the packing slip due to a rip in the slip. I think you are better off with the card on file as that way it will not get lost.

It definately seems that things are all over the place. I'd be willing to bet there will be customer service issues in the future as a result. Hope not...

I totally agree. A few "well it was in the packing slip" when it left Emotiva but wasn't when it arrived could be an issue in the future. But as you say hopefully not.

I don't foresee any problem. You either produce a card or you can't produce a card. For all that have been said and argued about the ownership of the discount card, I can't believe that there is anyone who have bought a UMC-1 and did not get the upgrade card and has not contacted Emotiva to get whatever issue resolved. To wait until the time of purchase of the XMC-1 to discuss the card is boneheaded stupidity. Such a person deserves no audience with, or sympathy from Emotiva
If there is anyone not yet clear on the processor upgrade policy and what will be required to get the upgrade discount. Here is the link. Notice that the buyer MUST produce the original card at the time of purchase. Good luck .

But the issue is the inconsistent way that Emotiva disburses the cards. In other words if the card falls out of the packing slip in transit what is ones recourse? I always thought that the card (physical or otherwise) should be kept by Emotiva and it would avoid all the selling back and forth of the cards. In other words if one buys the UMC-1 and then decides to upgrade to the XMC-1 then they can take advantage of the upgrade card. If one decides not to upgrade at all then the card is just not used.
I feel that as it is now the whole upgrade card situation could cause issues for Emotiva inregard to the way the cards are disbursed. In other words Emotiva is trying their best to take care of those that bought the UMC-1 by offering the upgrade card. But some are turning it into a side business of selling the cards. I'm definitely not saying that those that are selling their cards are doing anything wrong. Just that it might have been less of a headache for Emotiva to keep a record on file of those that qualify for the 40% discount. But maybe for Emotiva issuing cards is less of a headache and all on the recipient of the card.

Some of us don't need a card for an upgrade. Actually anyone who purchased the LMC, DMC or MMC doesn't need a card. Just call in your order. (unless you already used it on the UMC of course)
