HT Receiver upgrade help:
Hi all, I recently bought a XPA3. Have not even used it yet. However I am currently slumming it with a Yamaha RX-V665. I only got it because it was the cheapest unit with Pre outs.
I want to upgrade. Some issues that bother me with my current rcvr.
1) When I select different HDMI inputs sometimes the HTPC, or the TV will not pick it up the signal unless I power cycle the rvcr. Sometimes this drives me crazy.
2) I Want to stream some music from my Server directly to a receiver.
3) If I use external amp.... with my current rcvr its like the rvr is still putting out power even though no speakers are hooked up to it. ( reason I want to consider a pure pre pro )
I am looking at the UMC 1 to get my feet wet. Then I will be able to use the upgrade program for the XMC.
Or Should I look at a Pioneer Elite or Onkyo.... I would like to try out Audessey or MCACC or is the UMC/XMC just as good?
70% HT 30% music
Thanks for any thoughts,.

For 70% HT I would recommend something with at least Audyssey XT and preferably XT32. The Onkyo 818 has been a popular choice given it has XT32., 9.2 pre-outs and sells on Amazon for $850. The Denon 4311 has been another very popular choice recently due to sale prices. It will be difficult to find someone that can comment on the XMC-1's performance.

1) What's an "HTPC"? (a computer?). When you say "power cycle the receiver", do you mean you ahve to turn it off, then back on again to get it to latch onto an HDMI connection?
2) If you wanted to stream music from a server to a receiver, then you should have gotten a receiver with an Ethernet connection. (Or other reliable server to pre-pro connection).
3) I didn't understand this one - why do you think the receiver is 'still putting out power', when you say the XPA-3 is not even hooked up yet? (So of course its putting out power...).
Cheap advice: Before you do/change/buy anything more, and since you already have the XPA-3, why don't you just hook it up to the receiver's pre-outs and give it a go? You might be pleasantly surprised!

Mad Norse,
Yes the HTPC is a computer... and yes I have to "UNPLUG" it! Simply power cycle does not work.
2) I actually found a cool solution to stream music from the HTPC to the reciever withou having to turn the plasma on. However, I would like to have a new reciever where I can stream direct from server to Rcvr. All my music is FLAC. I can also use my windows phone to browse my collection with the solution i have now. I can't believe more people with windows based PCs dont try it out. Its a little program called foobar and I use an app called "remote for windows phone'. The app plugs into foobar in a nifty way.
3) I am still building my Mains that the XPA3 will be using so yes I will be using the RX V665 in the meantime!

Building your main L/R speakers? Cool. We'd all love to see photos of your progress, or at least the finished project!
I've seen 'foobar' mentioned on this forum in a few other threads, so suspect its becoming more mainstream...FLAC files are very nice!
(And don't forget to post pictures, and also let us know your experiances with the XPA-3/Yammy combo!).

fschris, just plug the XPA-3 into your RX-V665 and enjoy it. It's not a big deal. I've been running an XPA-5 with my 665 while I wait for the XMC-1. Needless to say, I've been running it a while. I check the forum about once a year and still no XMC-1.
See you guys next year!

I'd go with the UMC-1 now and then snag a 40% discounted XMC-1 when they (finally) appear. The XMC-1 has streaming/network capability. I achieve this with my UMC-1 using the Oppo BDP's capability - works quite well and supports all the major Audio/Video codecs and has wired and wireless Ethernet. Foobar2000 is my DLNA server for Audio on my laptop. For video, I just copy the files to a USB stick and the Oppo plays them perfectly.
The current implementation of EmoQ is pretty good, the 7.04.00.19 firmware really rocks! But the upcoming TacT RCS on the XMC-1 promises to be a game-changer in the mid-priced preopro market.
C'mon Emo, let's get that bad boy to market!!!
