 WTB: Mirage BPS-400 subwoofer
« Thread Started on Sept 15, 2009, 3:45pm »

Just in case anyone on the forum runs across this old sub from Mirage (or owns one they want to sell), please let me know. I am not holding my breath but, hey, stranger things have happened.

I believe this is about 10 years old (perhaps more). thanks.

well, I found one . . . anyone near this person?

http://baltimore.craigslist.org/ele/1447353788.html

If anyone can help me procure this sub (with my funds) I will worry about shipping afterwards (also my cost, of course).

Have you honestly read the reviews on this sub? I am trying to match with the other Mirage but are you saying this sub bites? Most who have owned this sub have said its very good and at least decent. Not the caliber of some of today's giants but come on, $250? I think that's a no brainer if I can get it. Hell even at $350.

I really want to great sub and I will (eventually) plunk down the serious cash for either single or a dual set up if I can afford the space and money but that's not in the short term.

This Mirage sub (the PS-12-90) that I bought for next to nothing completely opened my eyes... I never knew subs could sound so sweet and could make such an impact. Good Lord. I am certainly bummed that in the process of trying to upgrade that sub and fix a mild hum problem that its temporarily disabled and I am no relegated to my crummy Polk sub. :'(

And this is the Mirage PS-12-90 which is no where near as good as the BPS 400. Are there better subs available today than the BPS 400? Sure. But I'm guessing it would cost me a minimum $800 and most likely closer to at least $1200 or more.

I will say this: I am not interested in the MFW and also not in a DIY kit. I have seem the recent threads on the SVS, the Hsu, the Subversive, JL Audio, eD, and the Rhymiks plus a few others. None of the ones I like are less than $1000. I don't have that kind of cash in the budget right now.

Because the PS-12-90 was SO freaking sweet sounding in my set up, I was naturally very curious as to how the best Mirage sub would mesh with my system.

Now, I will easily allow that I am firmly entrenched in the uninformed category (read: idiot) when it comes to subs and that I'm improperly crediting the synergistic effects of blending a sub of the same manufacturer which leads me to the incorrect conclusion that my system sounds great because I'm using a mirage sub. Further, it could be that indeed a well built modern sub of today will net the same or better results. The trouble is, I don't have the cash lying around to experiment with subs and ship them back until I find the right sound. Am I over thinking this? Also a possibility.

But at the moment I'm running with the idea of finding an older Mirage sub that I can hopefully get for a song and play with it and learn about. If it doesn't happen, well, I will live.

Hell man, a sub EQ and optimizing one is very intimidating and I wouldn't know where to start.

I hope it is. Its 11 year old little brother sub that I have sounds great (of course, I have a dislcaimer regarding that impression) so I presume the BPS 400 sounds better. The reviews were quite glowing.

That said, this maryland lady has stopped replying to my emails and my take on that is that she thinks I'm just another Craigslist scammer. Ah well . . the search continues unless she's not used to emailing.

actually, sticksandstones (reg) offered to meet her half way, about an hour drive, which is tremendously generous of him but I haven't heard back from her. I want that sub bad but that's the way the ball bounces.

Maybe someone will appear that lives close enough to her to be able to check out the sub in person. If not, I will keep looking.

Yeah that one in Atlanta seems a little steep.

I have an older I think BPS-150....sounds pretty good. I'd imagine the 400 sounds great.

That being said...$650 is too much for a sub that old IMO.

I hate it when people on Craigslist pirate other people's pictures. Especially when you can't check it out in person.

Best of luck. I just checked Ebay, and Audiogon and no hits. Only the BPS-150 looks to be avail @ the current moment.

One place you might contact is MSSHIFI here in NY. They get A LOT of gear that comes in and out of their shop. Some of their stuff ranges from $50 power cords to thousand dollar speakers. They are also pretty nice people to deal with.
