Okay, I've got my Emotiva gear up and cranking; MMC-1, LPA-1, PSB Image T-45 fronts.
Now I'm looking for a subwoofer. My main concern is music. I want to fill in where the speakers roll off. Fast and tight and articulate are much more important than loud. Extension over maximum output. I don't need to shake the walls, just take the bottom end load off my amp and blend with the speakers.
But the budget is tight. I've heard great things about HSU and they have subs that would fit my budget. I'm hoping for feedback from any HSU owners, as well as other recommendations in this price range. I'm not afraid to go used if it will get me where I need to go.
What say you?

That's a pretty good deal. Those usually go for $399 + shipping, don't they?
My room is 13'X16", so I think anything bigger would be overkill for what I need. Thanks for bringing that sale to my attention. I was looking at the HSU STF-2 for $349 + shipping. It was on sale a while back for $319, but I missed that.
Like I said, I don't need to shake the walls. The increased headroom that taking the lower frequency load off my fronts and LPA-1 will give should give me more volume than my wife will ever stand (like I don't already have it ;D) and increased fullness at all volumes, right? I don't have much experience with subwoofers, except for a few over-cranked, boomy specimens I've heard in cars. I did hear a $4000 sealed 15" unit paired with some Canton Ergos a few weeks ago. The sub was Impressive. The Cantons weren't, especially considering that they were bi-amped with a pair of 200w NAD amps.
How big is the room you run your LFM-1 Plus in?

If you can wait a couple of weeks to make your purchase, you might want to take one of the new Emotiva Ultra sub woofers for a spin. If memory serves me, about the time Dann G had his melt-down Emotiva said that first Ultra subs would be "on the water" very soon; and, I believe that they take about 3 weeks to float from China to the USA.
I heard the 10 inch Ultra sub during Emofest last year and have to say I was quite surprised how good they sounded. The specs for the Ultra subs are available here on the Lounge. It is a sealed enclosure and comes in black or cherry finish. Dann was supposed to have put up the product page when he resigned. You may want to call Cathy to verify pricing and ETA.
Below you will find the specs that Lonnie had Dann post:
Re: Ultra Subs « Reply #9 on Dec 17, 2009, 4:43pm »

Specifications
Power Output: USub10- 300 watts Usub12-500 watts
Typical In-Room Frequency Response: USub10: 25Hz-200Hz Usub12: 22Hz-200Hz
Typical In-Room SPL: USub10: 107-110db Usub12: 109-112db
Balanced Input: 3V Unbalanced Input: 1.25V
Phase Adjustment: 0-180 degrees
X Over: 50-150Hz (24db per octave) Note: The latest pricing posted by Emotiva is $399 for the 10 incher and $499 for the 12 incher. Frequently, Emotiva has special pricing when a new product is first introduced. This is why I suggest you give Cathy a call to double check pricing and ETA. Good luck.

Hmm...
A 10" 300w? Sealed? I don't know that much about the difference between sealed and ported subs, but don't sealed units usually require much greater amplification, more power?
But I'll check it out. As I've learned in the short time I've had my new (for me) gear up and running, Emotiva offers a hell of a lot of bang for the buck.
Any chance anyone posted some pics of this sub? I'm a sucker for pics! ;D
I'll do a search...

Yes, the regular price on the LFM-1 C is $399 plus shipping. My LFM-1 Plus is in our living room crosswise at the end of on open concept condo room, 13 x 37 x 8.5. My 5 speakers cross over to the sub at 80Hz for the LCR and 90Hz for the surrounds. Remember that it is essential for proper blend of the speakers/subs to place and set up the sub correctly. The in-room frequency response of a subwoofer is affected by things like room acoustics, the location of the listener and the sub, interaction with the other speakers, and even the bass management circuit of the AVR or pre-pro. Experimentation with subwoofer placement and different listening positions is encouraged in order to obtain the best results in your own room. I would recommend some internet search and reading of subwoofer setup procedures, including those in your owner's manual. I would also resist setting the crossover to the sub too low even though PSB specifies the T45's down to the 35-48Hz area depending on decibel variation and axis orientation. I would recommend the 70 or 80Hz as a start and not any lower than 60Hz. Start with the PSB T45's set to "small" in the speaker setup for the cleanest and most defined bass IMO. You are correct that the sub with the mains in the small setting will take the strain off the LPA-1 in driving the T45's below 80Hz or where you have the crossover set. The dedicated amp in the sub will take over from there down. You will use the crossover in the pre-pro and not on the sub. Hope this helps. ;D

At $400, I would say the Emotiva sub is a worthwhile try out. I like the fact it has variable xover(and at 24db per octave no less which is a bonus), variable phase and rca/xlr inputs. It has it where it counts and its a SEALED unit which IMO is the best bet for a smoother fz response. If you find you need more output down the road, then add a 2nd one.

I'll check it out.
Thanks guys.
The pics and info in the other threads look good. It should do the job just fine. I suppose the Outlaw or HSU would too.
My buddy from work bought an STF-1 for his living room and he likes it for movies but not so much for music, says it's too "boomy." From what I've read of these subs, they're tight and fast. I think he hasn't got it calibrated right, maybe has a lot of overlap with his speakers. He's not a manual reading kind of guy and think he said he was using the crossover on the sub itself. I'm going to listen and see if I can help him get it set up better. Never done it, but I learn fast and am a manual reading kind of guy. Plus, I've been researching all the stuff chuckienut mentioned about setup for a couple of months now, in anticipation of setting up my HT. If it costs $$$, I research the hell out of it before I buy a thing.
So, I get to practice on his to learn, lol. I'll bet he'll be happier with it when we're done.
I appreciate the responses and suggestions. What a great forum.

I had an STF-2 that I just replaced last week with a VTF-2 Mk 3. There was nothing wrong with the STF-2 but I had just caught upgraditis and wanted something that went a little bit lower. If you are looking for a sub under $400, I'd give serious consideration to the STF-2. I did not find it to be boomy at all. But then I like balanced instead of emphasized bass so I had the volume control around 10:00 and the crossover set via the pre/pro at 80 hz. It's a very nice sub.

Yeah, there's quite a few of us waiting for this one. Just a little disappointed in the information flow though. In the first week of Jan. there was a promise for details on the website within a week. Then silence; understandable as all efforts were on fixing UMC. Then in early Feb. Big Dan gave us "very soon grasshopper" after which came some more details in the Feb. 18 webcast and again promises of details on the web within a week. Then we had Dann's meltdown and more silence. Hopefully we get an update soon; at least an indication of when we can really expect some news.

Dan said at Axpona that the Ultra subs are on the water. The pre-order list is due to come out real soon and they should arrive in a couple of weeks (it takes about 3 weeks; don't know how long they have been on the water). I'm getting the 12" that I heard at Axpona. Very smooth and quite compact.

Was it? I never did find out exactly what it was all about. It happened right after I joined. There were a few references to Dann posting at other forums, but apparently everything got deleted before I could read it.
I guess I don't really care. As long as Emotiva keeps making quality gear and standing behind it, I'm good. But you know the deal with curiosity and cats...
