About ready to make a move on the UPA 1'S.Just wanted to get feedback on what the sound difference will be ,over the UPA 2.This will just be for 2.1 music listening. Will the 1's give better detail as well as bigger soundstage?.I guess my main question would be , is it worth it.

Though I can't campare my UPA-1's to a UPA-2 (never owned one), I can say that my monoblocks are better than my previous XPA-2. I think they'll meet or exceed all your expectations, especially for 2ch music! Good luck with your decision.

Just wanted to clarify, when I say "better", I don't mean like a HUGE night & day difference. But in my room, with my gear, I did notice a few improvements.

I LOVE my SEVEN UPA-1s !!!
One thing I've learned about the unit though is it performs better with an 8ohm over 4ohm speaker load. I'm not sure why (Lonnie's floating BIAS in the output driver cascode?) but if you look at the specs for the unit Emo published the THD+N climbs by a factor of 38.11476080141747 when it's driving a 4ohm load. Perhaps this is why some people with 4 ohm speakers find it rather "metalic"? There is a low pass filter on the bi-wire board, it's last stage and I wonder if the board/caps are having any affect. I intend to remove the board and use better caps on that filter in a inter-part connection right at the terminals. Between the steel/aluminum hookup wire from main amp module to this bi-wire PCB and the multi tin trances to prevent attenuation on the bi-wire board and it's cheaper caps on the lowpass I'm sure I can make the unit sound even better! Remember this unit is $320 bucks!!! and as it stands it's an amazing unit FOR THE MONEY....
0.007337 % with 8ohm load 0.279648 % with 4ohm load <-- much higher than site spec but AP pdf shows the real numbers
That's a THD+N increase of X 38.11476080141747 and is rather significant...
PS Lonnie don't you think all the internal hookup wire should be copper? It doesn't have to be Ohno Continuous Cast or anything silly but I do expect copper not steel/aluminum unless your trying to attenuate with the hookup wire? Also why did you use the cheaper terminals on the UPA-1 than all your other units!

Hi, for now my system is composed by Proac studio 140 mk2 speakers + upa-2 + xda-1 + macbook, but I'm thinking in upgrade de amp for upa-1 or xpa-2. Can you explain your choice for the upa-1? Regards

I've owned the XPA-2 and 5. Also UPA-1's. IMO all you will get between the UPA-2 and 1's is more db's Good luck with your decision!

Although I think the UPA-2 is a significant upgrade over an AVR, I would get either the XPA-2, the XPA-3, or the UPA-1s. They are that much more powerful. See my tag lines.

I've got a UPA-2 too but its going unused at the moment. Eventually it will go into the bedroom. My setup is of a totally different kind than almost all, being active crossovers and DIY speakers for the L/C/R so the UPA-5 driving front/center tweeters is overkill but it does also power the surrounds. With my Yamaha DSP-A1 I would often clip the back channels and the UPA-5 has never audibly clipped. 190 watts seems to me to be enough for surrounds at least.

Dbs yes. But sound stage, is very noticeable. I have both amps and tried them head to head when I first bought the upa-1s. Worth the money in my book.

I have 3 UPA-1's for the LCR combo and a UPA-2 for the surrounds aand works and sounds sweet as...into all ERM-1's but might move the ERD-1's into service for wall mounting, and put the rears in another room

this is very interesting... actually when I look at the data, all the emo amps seen to have this characteristic.... EXCEPT the X1's. thanks for pointing that out, 4ohms is a real possibility for me and I almost pulled the trigger on U1's thanks again I LOVE my SEVEN UPA-1s !!! I have a XPA-3 for my front stage and a UPA-2 for my surrounds . I think everyday about selling the XPA-3 and buying 3x UPA-1 while there on sale , but for what I would get for my XPA-3 I dont know if its worth a 500.00 upgrade , I dont see it

Works and sounds awesome. Great for 2ch music and great for HT. You could sell your UPA-2 and go that route, I think you would like it.

So you guys think 2 upa 1's will be better to power my L and R compared to 2 channels from an xpa5? They are JTR triple 8's
