Because one is all I get. The conversation: "Don't you think it sounds better, hon?" I ask. "Well yeah, I guess it does," she replies. "When I get another one, it'll sound even better. More output! More punch!" " Second one? You didn't say anything about a second one before." She raises an eyebrow and fixes me with "The Stare." "I didn't?" I reply, sounding a bit perplexed. "Are you sure? I could swear I did." "You didn't." "Hmm..." "I thought you said this one would do what you want." "No, I said it would imrpove the bass over the speakers by themselves and I'd add another later." "Uh-uh." "Huh-uh?" "No way. One ugly black box is all I'm having in My Living Room." The capitals are audible. "It's not ugly, it blends really well with the speakers," I point out. "They're a little ugly too, but at least they're slender and have cool looking silver woofer thingies. That's just a box." "But..." "And you said it was going in the corner, where we couldn't really see it. That," she points at the sub, trying to look inconspicuous next to the right speaker, "is not the corner." "It sounds better there." "Fine. But I don't want another one. If that one isn't enough, send it back--you said you can send it back, right?--and get a bigger one that will do what you want. Okay?" "A bigger one?" I ask, trying to mask the excitement in my voice. "Yes. One." "Well, okay. If you think that's better. I really hate to send it back though." "Tough. We're not doing two in the living room, unless you want to sleep on them," she says, grinning That Grin. "Right. Bigger one." So, I called Emotiva and explained the situation and got a return number. Sarah was very understanding and helpful. I boxed the Ultra 10 up before work today and fed-Ex will pick it up in the morning. For the record, I was in no way dissatisfied with the Ultra 10. But my plan was for 2. One isn't enough output for my living room. WAF killed my plan. In the bedroom or workout room, it would be perfect. But I can't afford to keep it just sitting around and do the other upgrades too. So I sent it back. Looks like I'm going big. But I think I'm going to hold off on the sub for now and upgrade my speakers and amp first. There was a seperate discussion about surround vs. 2 channel and 2 channel won. Quote: "Two speakers is plenty for me. And you said you'd listen to music with only two anyway. You even said that when you put one in your workout room, you'd only want two. We don't need a theater in our living room. How many movies do you watch?" She has a point. I'm a music guy. I don't watch many movies and almost no TV. But I want better speakers and a bigger amp to drive them and so I'll revamp my entire system to an Emo 2 channel setup (thinking USP-1, XPA-2 or 2x UPA-1 and 8.3's) and then add a subwoofer. I'll have to save up some more cash for that, but maybe an F15? Epik Empire? What's bigger and sealed and musical? Thoughts anyone? DIY? My neighbor has a woodshop... I can fit maybe 36"x24"x24"! And here I thought she'd like two smaller ones better, lol. Has there ever been a cooler case of WAF? I love my wife.

Ha! Great title (and story).
Other ideas: 1. Bigger sub (as you stated) -- eg TCA CS 18.2 is really large 2. More WAF friendly subs with a furniture like finish -- eg SVS or Seaton, etc.
The subs with opposed drivers are quiet and could even be used as furniture/end tables. Good luck and post some pics!

Buy a Danley DTS-10 kit and when she sees just how large it is she will gladly let you buy a pair of smaller subs. Then turn around and sell the Danley

Her: "They're a little ugly too, but at least they're slender and have cool looking silver woofer thingies. That's just a box." ...... "Fine. But I don't want another one. Hmm... perhaps this is a good time to keep things simple. You're talking about replacing a lot of components that you just recently bought. My wife hates that sort of thing, and there's nothing wrong with the components you already have. Might I suggest returning the Ultra 10, and simply replacing it with an Ultra 12. Keep your PSB T-45's, which you seem to really like. Keep your LMC-1 (you can bi-amp the T-45's if it makes you feel bad to have a 7-channel amp driving only two speakers). You could sell the MMC-1 and replace it with a USP-1, but your MMC-1 does have analog-bypass, and you can feed a full-range signal to the sub, so the MMC-1 will do everything you need it to do. In other words, do what she said to do - replace the smaller sub with a larger one. You won't gain much, if anything, with the other changes.

In other words, do what she said to do - replace the smaller sub with a larger one. You won't gain much, if anything, with the other changes. I'm still considering all this. The thing is, I don't like the T-45's as much as I did at first, not after hearing better speakers. The bass is a bit boomy, though not so much as the T-65's I've heard, which others have said. I didn't think so until I heard some speakers that really did have tight bass. As far as bi-amping the T-45's, well I did a little research on that subject. Talk about a can of worms. If I understand correctly, to truly bi-amp any speaker, you have to disable the internal, passive crossovers and use active ones. This is possible, but I'm not that knowledgable, though I'm mechanically/technically inclined, and for not much more than the expense required to do that, I could sell the T-45's and just get better speakers. Also, the silk dome tweeters are sounding more and more attractive. My room is a little reflective and I have very minimal wiggle room when it comes to treatments. The PSB's aren't "bright" to my ears, but the higher end mids, such as some vocals, are forward. Combine that with the room and at loud levels they're too loud, compared with the bass and treble. But I have time to consider all this. It'll be at least the end of summer and into fall before I make a move. I've considered the swan Diva 4.2 (which the LPA-1 would drive just as well as it does the T-45's) and a bigger sub as well, which I could do for about the same price as a pair of 8.3's. I'm just not sure how much better they are than the T-45's. The PSB's fill the room with sound well; they're probably big enough. But I'm after better quality. I'm only contemplating a more powerful amp because many higher quality speakers are less sensitive than what I have now, some much less. I thought about doing the Ultra 12, but decided that, if I'm going bigger, I'm going as much bigger as I can get, even if I have to wait and save more cash. 15" at least. The Rythmik F-15 and Epik Empire look really good. Decisions, decisions.

Didn't I warn you that "when in doubt, get the bigger, more powerful one"! Only for most people, what happened to you would be a bad thing. You, on the other hand, get to pick out a much bigger and more expensive sub......I hate you! You lucky bastage! ;D

Of the subs listed the F15 is without doubt the most accurate and musical of the bunch. Regardless, you make bass with linear displacement. That single ultra 10" driver has linear displacement of roughly 65 cubic inches. A Rythmik 15" subwoofer has linear displacement of just over 200 cubic inches. It would take 3 of those Ultra 10's to roughly equal the displacement, output and low frequency extension of a single Rythmik 15" driver.

This thread is hilarious! The 'old' conversation btw husband and wife.
I must say though, I can't relate. :-)
How many subs and how my stuff is arranged is 100% my decision.

I would suggest the Rythmik F15. It is a wonderfully musical and powerful subwoofer. It should serve both a 2 channel listener and a home theater exceptionally well.

Naturally I would suggest you to get one SubMersive subwoofer: www.seaton-sound-forum.com/post?id=4292198#2www.seaton-sound-forum.com/?forum=86963On good records I have illusion (with closed eyes) that drummer are playing right in my room . So far it's best musical/HT sub I personally have auditioned yet. It has 1kW Ice Power plate amp and two opposite mounted 15" drivers (no cabinet vibration) From WAF point of view probably the best chose would be this one: www.martinlogan.com/products/descenticould be found used one on Audiogon for about $1000 Didn't auditioned it personally but according reviews on AVSforum supposed to be good.
