I'm getting close to replacing my old AR S112PS subwoofer. To mate well with my new Magnepan MMGs I desire a sealed design, a rigid, relatively lightweight cone, low driver Q, and perhaps servo control. My first choice would be a Rythmik Audio F12G which are $750 with a 370 watt amplifier and PEQ or $630 with a 300 watt amplifier. However, I have been surprised that my old ported AR sub does such a good job with the Magnepans and am thinking I may by satisfied with a good, dynamic sealed sub at a modest price. Two choices following that line of thinking appear to be the Elemental Designs A3S-250 for $350 and the Emotiva Ultra 10, currently the same price.
Regarding the Emotiva Ultra 10:
1. What is a high BL woofer design?
2. Does the proprietary para-aramid blended fiber cone for high rigidity, accurate low frequency response, and minimal breakup means this is a relatively lightweight cone? Does that contribute to low driver Q?
3. Does the claim of excellent transient response with smooth, extended low end mean there is a good chance it will integrate well with my Magnepan MMGs?
4. What is the sophisticated dynamics processing for optimal system performance referred to by Emotiva? Indeed what are the details regarding the input control system with sophisticated dynamics processing, equalization, and signal management and how do they contribute to good subwoofer performance?
5. What would constitute elegant soft limiting in a subwoofer and why is that important?
6. I'm assuming that Emotiva's claim of "Deep, powerful, and accurate, the Ultra Sub 10 delivers authoritative low frequency performance while maintaining musical accuracy, pace, and detail" means that they would think it should meet the demands of good integration with planar/quasi-ribbon loudspeakers?
I know, a lot of questions but if anyone has any insight into these musings I'd appreciate it. The certain advantage of the Emotiva Ultra 10 is the 30 day money back trial.

I'm using my Ultra 10 in my small office and like it.
I don't have measurements, etc. or specific answers to your questions.
Great sale though.

Jackfish, Call Lonnie, talk to him about your speakers and what the rated frequency response is and he can explain where they tuned the sub frequency and pretty much answer your questions. Take notes though so you can come back and fill in your blanks. I just ordered the Ultra 12 as I suspect the ERS maybe a ways down the road after the XMC I hope and this is an awesome sale! Jackfish, I have not heard the Emotiva subs. I do own a Rythmik F15 and in terms of blending it in with Magnepans it maybe one of the best if not the best sub out there for Magnepans. I would spend the extra dough and just get the Rythmik. The Direct Servo is where the magic is.  |

Accurus, do think I need the 370 watt amp with PEQ in a Rythmik F12G for my 11.5'x15.75' room? I'm thinking I could just use the 300 watt amp.

Get as much sub you can afford and, fits in your space. Remember, You can always turn the volume down but, you can't turn up what's not there. Two, IMO are better then one. My room is 10 X 12 and, I have two eD A5s-300s, 500 watt subs in there. Neither sub ever has to work to hard so, distortion is kept at a minimum even at high output.

Jack,
I would get the 370 PEQ. First it has the PEQ function which is great. Secondly always buy as much amplifier as you can get. You can never have too much headroom on an amp. That is my philosophy with everything amplifier. If you can afford it but the most amplifier you can buy.

I have an old 8" yammy down firing sub and want to replace it. it does a pretty decent job in the room it's in. i am thinking that the 10" emo would be plenty, considering what i have now which again doesn't sound bad but i'm sure the 10" would be an improvment. never really play it loud, don't like too much rattling of things and yes, the yammy does rattle stuff so that's why i'm leaning towards the 10" emo. I don't believe i need to spend the extra hundred to get the 12". any thoughts....

solarrdadd, good to see you buddy! ;D My 886 is doing well.  If you're not a bass head like me then a 10 is probably OK. However, like I said previously, you can always turn it down but, not up if it doesn't have it. IMO, for an $100 I'd go for the 12. |

Hey radtech, glad to hear from ya and everything is going fine with me and mine hope the same for you and yours. I know and i hear ya about the $100 but my kids in college and every $100 helps. plus she wants to do the july 4th weekend at Virginia Beach and she's doing really well and were gonna do it so yes, when trying to do some upgrades i have to be concerned not to overspend since i'm helping my kid out as much as i can but still trying to sneak in a little upgrading where and when i can. I'll give the 12 some thought but for right now, i think the 10 will be more than plenty considering i'm upgrading from an 8" yammy @ i believe 125w and like i said it does a good job. i'm looking to move it to the basement in my office where i just put a TX-SR308 receiver for my little secondary system. it powers 2 TSi100's and a CS10 center with 2 small logitech surrounds ceiling mounted. i sit about 5' from all speakers the 308 sounds great, i get my lossless audio, DSD for my SACD's plus it's 3D ready and it's a 2010 model with 2 years warrenty. works great too. i have a HD-DVR Cable box & an Oppo 80 connected to it. $100 might not sound like a lot but i do try and think about my kid and the 10" would be a nice upgrade over what i have now. i actually have the 8" yammy turned down because at times it's too much depending on the movie and i'm really not a bass head. good talking to ya. the 5507 is still going strong in the main HT room. I'll keep you posted as in a couple of months i expect to upgrade my front 3 in the main HT setup to Axioms, the M80v2 L & R and the soon to be released VP180v3 center. Thx for the suggestion. What is your reasoning over the 1 ultra 12? Curious to know. I plan on using a sub or two for 50/50 music and movies. Considering either 2 ultra 10 or 1 ultra 12. What should I get? IMO, two 10s. ;D |

my sub should be here later today, after i set it up, i'l report back here. checked the tracking so far so good. as of yesterday it was about 2 hours from my house! i will be connecting this sub from the XLR sub-out jack.

  yes, i'm double dipping here at the emo site, i posted this somewhere else about this sub. it was another thread about subs that i responded to so it was a follow up, sorta double dip! Well, you knew it would take that long for me to get back to ya with this! First thing i'd like to say is that I haven't re-run the calibration program because i'm waiting until i change out my front 3 in a month or so; then i'll kill two birds with that one calibration stone as it were! with that said, i have placed the sub about 2' from the position where it will go. i made temporary connections of cable for power and i connected the XLR x XLR interconnect and powered it up. here are the things i tested it with: SACD's: John Mayer: "Heavier Things" cut 1, "Clarity" Eric Clapton: "Slowhand" cut 2, "Wonderful Tonight" cut 3, "Lay Down Sally" Blu-Ray Movie: Universal Soldier: opening sequence (until they escape in the helicopter) Battlestar Galactica: Season One: Complete Four Part Mini-Series, Disc One ok first i'd like to say, it did power on and once i turned on the first cut, "Clarity" it indicated that it was getting signal. so far so good on that end. for anyone who has heard the John Mayer SACD, you know how bass heavy Clarity is. after the first two verses, it reaches a point, then the bass really kicks in and i mean like a big foot in the ass kicks in! at this point, i had no doubt that i was no longer listening to my old 8" downfiring yammy sub! it performed like i would not have imagined it woud have i only made a minor adjustment to the volume setting it to about 11 o'clock on the dial and it was perfect. for everything else played it was the best i'd heard my system sound in a while. I must especially mention the opening sequence for "Universal Soldier". for anyone who has seen that movie, right after the first car crash before they go to get into their car, the guy comes out and starts firing a powerful military weapon and the bass from that, i could feel in my chest, i could feel the air movement it was at that moment that i was glad i already have 2 children, CAUSE I WON'T BE MAKING ANYMORE! yes, it's nutt rattling! :rock: i would like to close and say: * I made another very good component choice by research alone (and i did a lot of research on this sub, of course the true choice came in the form of a memorial day sale!) * I am very happy with said choice * I am certain that the Ultra Sub 12 would have been too much for me in the size room i'm in and (yes i know i could have just turned it down) I was able to use that $100 difference somewhere else (my kids in college and needed something, problem solved) * I am very happy with the small footprint it has and you would think that you would get such great effects with it by looking at it in person or oneline either. in closing, i would like to say that this sub is everything it's touted to be and then some. it works perfect for me and my room, as i said, i'm not a bass head, the 8" downfiring yammy was good but, this is much better. I like the fact that i can keep all my interconnects XLR out's for the price, i've not seen a sub, of this quality, at this price (even if it wasn't on sale) with XLR and a dedicated LPF bypass switch. again, emotiva has won me over with another product with incredibly high price to performance ratio. I do highly recommend it to anyone who has a room that they don't need a gigantic sub physical box or woofer size, this might just be the one for you. Thus far, Emo is batting 1000 with me and products! |

Nice report. I have my Ultra 12 hooked up and got it this week. I am using XLR's for a 10" Rocket and the Ultra 12. I have just ordered this week and received the external soundcard to run REW on my laptop, Behringer BFD unit with parametric EQ to calibrate the two subs.
I have ground loop on the Behringer product and will have to get an isolater so my review on all this with A/B on single plus dual is going to be delayed but I really dig having the dual sub.
The XLR Y adapter works great off of the USP-1. I have the USP-1 on max low pass frequency and using the cross-overs on each sub since they are not identical.
I am getting some major kick drum depth and bass guitar is quite impressive. I am looking forward to doing more review. The Ultra 12 is only on about 9:00-10:00 on the volume dial.
