Hey all, Just bought a used UPA-7 and am thinking about picking up one of these as well...can anyone tell me if the UMC-1 has HDMI handshake issues with DirecTV HD-DVR's and which firmware you're using? Don't want to buy a unit that's buggy with my setup...
Also, are you using a universal remote (which one), the DVR learning remote or the Emotiva?
Thanks, Cory

from most reports here in the forum, just about all the DVRs on the market don't handle HDMI well. Many folks have just reverted to using Component (R/G/B) for video and fiber optic for the audio. You won't be losing anything because all the cable and sat providers are just 1080i, not 1080p. I have this type setup on my Dish sat box.

From what I've read, mostly on here, they are going to limit all Component to 480i and the HDMI spec requires this so DVR manufacturers will have to get a handle on these handshake problems.

Cory,
I have a UMC-1 with hdmi connection to a Diretv HD-DVR (HR21-700). The UMC-1 came with FW 7.04.00.00 and I have had no handshake issues other than slow startup. I updated the firmware to 7.04.00.07 a couple of weeks ago hoping that the startup time would improve and while I have not seen any improvements there, everything still works as expected. I was hesitant to update the firmware since I had no problems. I am using the Logitech Harmony 880 remote and it took a bit to get the commands to work without problems, but it also is working properly.
Hope this helps in your decision making.

Well, that can't happen until Emotiva creates a new FW update that would enable that restriction. So for the time being it is your best course of action.

I've actually gotten rid of the handshake issues with DVRs by cancelling my cable. My money goes to Netflix.

Insert lots of swearing here.
Trying to put the latest firmware on all day!!. Haven't had much trouble before. Getting Runtime error 9 in the second pass of the first firmware. Tried different USB cables, laptop (Win XP) with extras turned off and in safe mode. Also tried the Emonatics driver (is that still relevant?). Why is firmware updating so bloody difficult?
This on top of the many bugs and flaws I have with the UMC-1 and XPA-5 I'm about ready to chuck them in the river (except they cost too much). What a complete ripoff they have both turned out to be.

What sort of bugs does the XPA-5 have? Haven't heard of any before now.

More a flaw - it hums VERY loudly. Finally got the firmware on. Looks like they actually fixed one of the major bugs I had - loss of audio from a PCM source every time the channel was changed. Hoo bloody ray (about time).

If it is defective don't complain that its buggy, ship it back.

He's in Australia so return shipping would likely be uneconomical.
My XPA-5 hums a bit more than I would like too. Although it is better on my desk in the office than it was in the entertainment unit in the theatre room.

I read a post somewhere else in the lounge from Dan Laufman that Emo is preparing a "major SW update" for the UMC-1. Anyone know its ETA?

Actually the HDMI licensing people are insisting that next year component output not be allowed to be any better than 480, so for HD you will have to use HDMI.

p.s. Didn't realize he was in Australia. I'm fortunate in that none of my Emo amps hum at all.

My XPA-5 hums/buzzes. However, it's a bit less in my new house.
Sorry, off topic.

I haven't heard anything new regarding the update since Dan mentioned it on 19 August. I would guess we'll here about it in the next podcast (unless it comes out comes out in the next 10 days).

To the OP, I have a DirecTV DVR and it plays well in the sandbox with my UMC-1...no real issues at all w/that. I have had a VERY rare audio drop when fast forwarding through recorded stuff (like, may 2 or 3?) and the audio comes back if I toggle inputs from the DirecTV to any other and back.
I use a Harmony remote. It seems to work quite well, except when the batteries get low...then sometimes it does not turn everything on or off or the volume control might not work. But, a recharge and all works fine!

Sorry to re-post, but does anyone know anything about the release date for the next update? Unless anyone on the board has talked with Big Dan or Lonnie, I highly doubt there is any news to be had. For the most part, the best way to get an answer to your question would be to give them a call.
