Hi Everyone,
This is my first post, and hopefully it wont be too long before I become part of the Emo family.
Anyway, I was thinking of purchasing a couple of UPA-1 monoblocks to power my front speakers - Jamo C809, and was just wondering if they would be sufficient to power these speakers.
The Jamo C809's are power hungry and are not the most efficient of speakers - Rated at 200w @ 6 ohms with a sensitivity of 89db.
At a 6 ohm rating, the speaker will technically be drawing more than the 200w from the amp, but it is enough ? I also like to listen to my music quite loud at times so would it be beneficial to have the extra headroom and maybe I should look at an XPA-2 ?

I was using a pair of Revel F12s which were 6ohm nominal and 89db efficient, I am now using Mirage OMD-15s which are also 6ohm nominal but 91db efficiency, my UPA-1s do not break a sweat when pushed. I too like it loud and heavy, I really doubt you will be lacking for power. I am sure others will follow echoing my sentiments. Oh, and welcome to the forum, hope you join the Emo family.

You will be fine. Even though it is the U series it has an X series module in it that will have no problems powering those speakers. Pick up a pair and enjoy.

I am still in break-in/evaluation phase - been a long week or 2 of work, not doing sh*t this weekend though so I will be jamming a lot and dreaming of emofest! I will post my thoughts soon - as illiterate as they may be. Also will post some pics.

What, you don't want the XPR-2? ;D Just kidding, welcome! Jamo's are yummie! I think 89dB is not bad, it's average. Since you noticed that the amps are more than 200 W with 6 ohm (more like 275 Watt, I guess) this will be more than enough. Also a good budget match (but the XPA-2 would be a match too). I prefer the monobloc approach for 2 channel. What's the rest of the rig?

As mentioned, 6 ohms means the UPA-1 has around 275 watts available. My PSB's are 6 ohm at about the same sensitivity as yours and my UPA's never break a sweat.

And then I could compare them to my Swans. * I need a bailout so I can afford some more speakers* ;D

I use my UPA 1's with Magneplanar MMG's which are 4 ohms and very inefficient (86 db) and have plenty of juice. In fact they will play louder than I can stand it while still sounding clean and grit free

Thanks for all your helpful replies.
I'll be putting down an order for a couple of UPA-1's shortly. I'll remember to share my thoughts once I have given them a good workout.
I know I can also look at the XPA-2 or even wait for the XPR-2, but I simply cannot go past the price of the UPA-1's. And as long as they can power my speakers with enough dynamic headroom them I am more than satisfied.
I have the matching Jamo "C" series for the rest of my gear - C80 centre, C803 for the bookshelfs and I'm thinking of adding the C80 surrounds. I will most likely go for the XPA-5 for the rest.

Thanks for your replies.
Given my speakers are 200w(continuous)/400w(max) @ 6 ohm, will the UPA-1 putting out approx 275w @6 ohm give me sufficient headroom for the peaks with music and HT use ?

Your speakers with the UPA-1s can deliver THX reference (85 dB with 20 dB headroom) output with headroom to spare.
In a typical room and seating arrangement you will have over 108 dB of continuous output possible at the rated power, with peaks well accommodated (no or low distortion) above that.

I have the same speakers (Jamo C809) with an XPA-2. They sound incredible!!! I have so many people whose jaw has dropped at the sound they put out. If the UPA-1's were available last year, I would have gone with them. Great choice in speakers!! Best Regards, Stan
