I would think Lonnie and Emo would like us to keep it to ourselves. This might not be the actual release code, so I doubt they would want everybody to have it before the official release, just in case this one doesn't stick.

OK, here are my personal findings with the "Hot Rod" firmware: 1. The audio sounds "fuller" to me. Richer. A noticeable (not necessarily "major") improvement. VERY NICE! 2. Channel separation also seems a little more pronounced. My cats keep following the sound as it switches from speaker to speaker, which they did not seem to have noticed previously. (Did I just really use my CATS to demonstrate an improvement with the firmware?) 3. The glitch I had (a couple of other memebers also reported it) where going from, say, optical audio to HDMI caused a complete and unrecoverable drop in audio, is now fixed. I've been going back and forth for a couple of hours and no problems. Although it does take about 3-5 seconds to lock on to HDMI. 4. Video lock on pass through went from 5-7 seconds to a pretty steady 2-3 seconds. For some reason, on Auto I never had a problem. It locked on pretty quick. So I did not notice any improvement on Auto. 5. In about 3 hours of watching DirecTV, which was the only occasion when I would get a split second audio drop (never had audio drops from ANY other source), I've had no drops. Let's see if this is permanent. 6. The only issue I can think of: Still can't get PLII to "stick" as my default for MULTIPCM. It keeps going back to All Stereo. I can still manually select it, however. This is looking very promising for the next release. Great job by the Emotiva staff!! I echo the sentiments above. The new FW is a step forward. I have found the following: 1. HDMI lock on is much quicker. 2. I have tested the new FW with TiVo, Bluray (Avatar and Iron Man 2) and DVD (The Italian Job). Everything played superbly. I found that there is a more holographic sounstage complimented with smoother transitions between channels. The sound quality appears to have improved - a higher resolution sound. In terms of sonic colouration, the sound is warm and detailed. 3. The only time I have suffered a lock up was (before installing the new FW e.g. using 7.02 not the new 7.02.00.05) after pausing a Bluray for 7 minutes. I had to reset both to clear them. I duplicated this scenario - with the new FW no problem. 4. I have had only one brief centre drop out - more like a cycling off and on, so not really a 'drop out' per se. 5. I was happy with v7.02, the new FW really does up the ante. 6. IMHO, UMC owners should feel confident that our lot is getting better and better.

I looking forward to the fixing of the optical to HDMI drop, but I can't load the front panel code to fix the shutdown issue until the hex codes for the metal remote are posted.
Don't know what I'm going to do; no sense in doing the upgrade if I'm not going to fix the shutdown issue.

I'm watching Master and Commander right now, and the opening scene was incredible. It does seem that the sound quality has gotten better. I didn't know what to think of it at first, as I was thinking it was just the good ol placebo affect. But the more I watch material that I'm very familiar with, the more I notice. It's just a bit more explosive, and open. Everything just seems to have a bigger and fuller sound to it with a more enveloping effect. When I was comparing the UMC to an Onkyo 3007, that is exactly what made the Onkyo better with movies. Just the added dynamic range and explosiveness made everything more exciting. Now the UMC seems to have what it was missing before, and is pretty much on par with the 3007. It really is a nice improvement. I'm not going to say that it's ten times better, and that nothing can touch it now, but it is a much needed improvement, that definitely makes movies more fun. Oh, and everything is still completely stable.

Dave. it's the new firmware for the UMC-1 Dave that hasn't been released yet. 5 Lucky folks got to play with it early, I think it's meant to be of avail to us all next week or sometime soon. It's not just meant to resolve most the remaining issues but some nice tweaks as well

If you have the metal remote, then you can "Learn" from the metal remote since you have a URC, right??? This is what I did anyhow with my MX-500.

Sorry I haven't posted much on my experience with the new software. I was up to about 2am Friday/Saturday morning loading the software, running Emo-Q and resetting my preferences (I reset factory defaults before and after software updates). After all that I ran through some tests before I sat down for a short listening session. Yesterday I was busy with family obligations all day so I didn't have a chance to play with the new software. So this is still early in the game but some things jumped out right away.
Most obvious for me was a significant improvement in video and audio lock over HDMI. Previous 7.02 software seemed to attempt video lock multiple times before locking in. Best case was about 3 seconds but it often doubled or tripled that. On very rare occasions it wouldn't lock in until I switched sources and returned back. Updated software has been a consistent 2-3 seconds up to this point. Audio lock is much faster as well. As audio formats jumped around during Directv commercials and DVD previews audio lock was instant. These improvements go along way to improve the day-to-day usability of the UMC-1.
Next comments on EMO-Q. I haven't run EMO-Q more then a couple of times with previous software releases as I didn't get consistent results and some of the readings were off by quite a bit. I took this update as I chance to see if the new mic I received a week or so made any difference. I didn't run multiple times to see if results were consistent but the settings seemed good and I didn't have to tweak anything before a listening session. I was still surprised to see the ambient sound check still present. At this point we shouldn't have to know to rub the mic to pass the ambient sound check to get Emo-Q to run.
As to sound quality I'm not ready to comment yet. There is certainly no steps backward in this area but I focussed more on usability up to this point and my short listening session was with a recording I wasn't overly familiar with. I'll get to the audio side of the equation next.
Overall I see this software is another step forward for the UMC-1 and looking back it has come a long way since the v5 software I had factory installed. Take care.. Scott

In my old Panasonic receiver, all/multi-channel stereo was named "Party" Simply depress the "Party" button while playing a CD and it would send the signal 'equally loud' to the main channels without affecting the subwoofer. Yes. The privileged 5 got the 'preview' of the FW update that should be released later this week. Right now, only those five persons have it. See some of the earlier postings in this thread, especially reply #4 on what Lonni had to say about this upcoming FW. ;D jamrock
