Hi all... I have a serious issue with one of my XPA-1's I was just sitting here, watching a move, went to kitchen for a quick snack. Heard a weird noise in my living room a few feet away. Saw one of my XPA-1's redlined into overload, making serious clicking noises, and flashing red LED's across the board. I am thinking "Oh no,what the hey??" I shut it off for a few minutes, checked cables etc.Amp was still quite cool, even after being on a couple of hours. Turned it on again...did same again, but worse. Turned it off. It turned ITSELF on again, and power button was also wigging out, going from pink to blue.At one point, pushing the button did nothing,it would not turn off,so had to use rear power switch. Now the amp smells like its fried..you know, the electrical burning smell. I disconnected the darned thing. Funny thing is,(not really funny)I just bought the ERC-1,it arrived about a week ago,and that TOO had issues of turning itself on,then off, then on...and could not shut it down without physically pushing the button. Took triggers off,to no avail. What in the world is happening? I loved the way my amps performed...til now. Only had them about 2 or 3 months or so. Now I have no system to listen to. Also,I am hoping the burnout has not affected my brand new Maggie 12's?Is that possible too?

Maybe you have a problem with your electrical circuit. A bad AC wall box plate with bad connections or burned wires would do that. Check it out! Presto!
* I had similar experiences in the past from oxidation on my electrical wiring ends, right at the junction in the AC box from the wall.
> Remedy: Change that AC box, and the wires too.

On the MG12's, are the fuses blown?, if not, they should be ok. Good luck.

MG12's ='s a 4ohm load and speakers with low sensitivity. Are you using a dedicated powerline or lines for those amps?

Things happen , I am sure you will be taken care of by Emotiva. You have a 5 year warranty. Do you have multiple appliances, equipment etc plugged into the same circuit by chance.

You mentioned your ERC with power on issues too. Describe how you have the trigger circuit wired.

I unplugged offending amp,ran it through another circuit...same thing. my listening system at this point is the 2 XPA-1's,USP-1,ERC-1 through the Mag 12's. All are running through a outlet box with 6 hotpoints(surge protected). I tried whole setup in another outlet box(different brand, same thing.) Buggerit! After setting it all up again and turning system on,same amp wigged out immediately again, turned it off with switch in front, and the darned thing turned itself on again, giving me a light show, dimmed all the lights in this end of the house, then popped the breaker, plunging me into darkness this time. ? All circuits in house are fine..clean etc. Kind of hard to dedicate a circuit for these beasts...plugs are miles apart. Hope this answers you all. Funny how it turns itself on too though...and the ERC doing that as well...any thoughts on that issue with amp and erc having mind of their own?

Sharkman, had trigger from USP-1 to R XPA-1,Triggered to L XPA-1,then from there to ERC. unhooked that per advice from Nick at emotiva,,then tried different config...same thing. Now I am afraid to go to bed tonight...might be RISE OF THE MACHINES,and they'll git me while I sleep!!

Funny how it turns itself on too though...and the ERC doing that as well...any thoughts on that issue with amp and erc having mind of their own? 2 XPA-1's an ERC and USP-1 through a single 15a or 20a circuit even, driving a pair of inefficient 4ohm speakers? And through what sounds like a current limiting surge protector? Not a good thing in my book. And thats assuming nothing else is on the line either. Honestly, if you have the money for XPA-1's then you should have the money to get an electrician in there to install a PAIR of dedicated 20a lines(NO SURGE PROTECTION). SHould cost you no more than $40 in parts and a half days labor at most. XPA-1's with an easy 8ohm load should be on their own dedicated circuit. But a 4 ohm load with inefficient speakers, each should have its own dedicated line. Now you could have very well just have a defective amp, but even if it wasnt the lack of available current that stressed the amp, you should be seriously thinking about getting a pair of 20a dedicated lines installed. My UPA-1's which only draw about a third of the current your XPA-1's draw have their own dedicated 20a line. They drive my MMG's and they pull significant current themselves.

That's weird. we had a similar incident up here in Washington State just about the same time there were reports of a strange UFO at night with bright blue lights. There was a pulsing sound that witnesses said sounded like: Lonnie call home.....Lonnie call home.....Lonnie call home.....Lonnie call home.....Lonnie call home.....Lonnie call home

I don't think it's an electrical issue with your house circuit. I have my two XPA-1's on one 15 amp circuit..they drive very inefficient 4 ohm Thiels and I've never had an issue with that. The power for them goes through an Adcom ACE-515 power enhancer.
I have all of my other audio gear for that system running through a single APC H15 power conditioner on a single 20 amp circuit. There are three power amps running at a time there..an XPA-5 with the same 1200 VA transformer as in the XPA-1, along with a Threshold SA/4e with a pair of big honking toroidal transformers, plus a Threshold S 200.
Also on that same APC power box is an Integra DHC 9.9 pre amp processor, a Threshold T2 balanced pre amp with it's own separate power transformer box plus an Oppo Blu Ray player. You add all of those up and that's gotta be more than you had running through your circuit. I've never had a power issue with it.

Ntrain42,thanks for your input/insight. When you say'dedicated' circuit for each amp,do you mean two seperate hotpoints along the same wall,or some other definition(sorry, not too savvy on the tech speak) Also,I am in a rental house, and cant go tearing into stuff.

Tom If your in a rental house, then nothing you can really do I guess unless you get landlord's permission. Again, not saying line sag was the culprit. Just 2 power hungry amps on one line is not something I would ever do, especially if your cranking those MG12's to loud volume.

I'm really sorry to hear about the amp and off hand don't really know what would cause it, but your post is great. I'm heading out of town early tomorrow but call the office and talk to Nick, I feel confident he can figure it out and get you taken care of.
