The site I found these is www.freehearingtest.com/hia_gunfirenoise.shtmlI do not agree with it saying a 38 is louder than a 223 aka Ar-15. I can shoot any pistol without my ears hurting. But my ar and ak feel like they are going to explode my ears. I wonder what the actual spl of my AK-47 and Ar-15 going off at the exact same time is. They are both over 155db EDIT...I always wear ear plugs now. if not my ears would explode.

A 38 special is within 3db of a 30-30! But they fail to mention where the measurement was taken in relation to the weapon.

And a top fuel dragster can be anywhere from 150 - 175 db for a much longer period of time.

Just guessing here, but could it be that the firing chamber is closer to your ears with a rifle than with handgun held at arms length?

But, a 38 or any revolver leaks sound out from the cylinder and barrel, a bolt action rifle only emitts sound from the barrel end

I had a Browning grade II semi-auto chambered for a .338 Win Mag. Talk about loud! (I wish I never sold that piece) It would probably add some noise. I think the majority of it would still head out the barrel, for the most part it is the energy of the blast that forces the bolt back since the round is already out of the barrel

"Intermediate" cartridges like the .223 (AR-15) and 7.62x39 (AK) are significantly higher pressure than pistol cartridges, and noticeably louder. However, they're also about a foot and a half further away from your head.
True rifle cartridges like the .308 and .30-06 aren't actually that much higher in pressure than the much lower powered AR and AK rounds, they simply burn more powder in a larger case to push a heavier bullet at about the same speed.
By the time a pistol recoils out of battery and the chamber opens, the bullet is way down range and the pressure has dropped significantly--that's the point of the delay. The sound comes out of the muzzle.
Firing both the AR and AK at the same time, if both are 155 dB, would give you 158 dB. Doubling your noise source adds 3 dB; that's how decibels work. It's the same scenario as your amps, where you get 3 dB for every doubling of power.
For concerts, that 120 dB is almost certainly individual peaks. The average volume is far lower, which is why you don't leave deaf.
And I can't believe you guys are screwing around with no hearing protection. As a lover of both music and shooting, I wear plugs underneath my earmuffs.

About using silencers, like the pros? ...Like this one right here below! ...Would that work as well on speakers? {Anyway, when I go to a loud music concert, or listening at loud volume levels; I always wear earplugs... for good safety measure.} Attachments:

Yeah . You better patent the speaker silencer and sale in online. Im sure some crazy people will for sure buy it. Put some good fake numbers and a bunch of false claims and you could be the next snake oil millionaire.

The firing chamber may be closer to the ear but I have shot all sorts of pistols and rifles and by my experience there is no way that a 38 or and pistol os similiar caliber is even close to either of my AK or AR in spl. With one shot of my rifles my ears ring and hurt and I cant hear. With my pistols I could shoot several shots with no pain or ringing. Its a must to wear ear plugs with the AR and AK unless I want to be deaf after 2 or 3 shots. Not so with any pistol. Im sure its different for others though.
