Way back in the days the products page used to show the specs of the xpa-5 in 1, 2 ,3 and 4 channels. My question is when im listening to music. I would only be using 2 ch of the xpa-5. I have not bought it yet but just want some info. How would the 2 compare the xpa-2 and xpa-5 using only 2 channels. Does anyone know the wattage the xpa5 outs out into 2 ch? Keep in mind my towers love more power. Right now i only have my avr running them and I cant run them full range at very loud levels like I used to be able too. Can one held me find out the wattage into 2 ch only

I have heard both of these amps on the RTi12's, older version of RTi9's, both amps do the job very well. Only thing I noticed is the XPA-5 has a little less headroom but you have to really crank it up to notice it. Yes the XPA-5 was used with 2 channels only and with all channels pushing, when pushing all 5 channels is when I noticed the lower headroom. The XPA-2 seems to have a little less distortion when driving RTi12's (esp. in the low end), these speakers do like a lot of power. I don't know what kind of wattage is is being pushed with XPA5 in 2 channel but you do notice a difference.

I think from memory the XPA-5 with only 2 channels driven is around 250-275wpc while the XPA-2 has been tested to hit 340wpc. But power isn't everything I have both of these amps and the XPA-2 is much better sounding without a doubt.
How much 2 channel use do you think you will use? if it's only here and there I think the XPA-5 is pretty good but I think I had read somewhere thats it's less than ideal to push it hard often in just 2 channel mode. I think it was something about the cooling of the modules as the XPA-5 modules were design for handling 200w and when pushing it in 2 channel mode you get close to 300w pumping through.
I think the concern was only about prolonged long term use IF your pushing things, I used mine for both HT and music for a while before adding the XPA-2 and mine ran fine.

I just listen to music (mp3) while partying. And it is at very high levels. I think what I will do is get an xpa5 when there is another sale then an xpa-2 since I run 7 speakers. If the xpa-2 is better on the low end with the polks that is really what I am looking for. But the xpa-5 I think will do me just fine for a while. Now to round up the cash..

Seleck Other than going back thru the old posts to find the output Wattage for the XPA-2 and the XPA-5 you can get a close approximation by looking at the rating of the toroidal transformers and the filter capacitors of each amp. Both amps use a 1200 VA transformer and have similar sized capacitor banks. Therefore, the total Wattage that each amp is capable of producing is very similar. The XPA-2 will have a slight advantage because it uses 12 output devices per channel versus 6 output devices per channel on the XPA-5. This will give the XPA-2 higher dynamic response. Plus the XPA-2 has higher rail voltage furthering its advantage over the XPA-5. The architecture of the Emotiva XPA Series amps makes the total maximum Wattage available to meet the current demands placed upon it. All in all the output of each amp for 2 channels is going to be very close. Lonnie has said that as long as you don't push the output placed on the XPA-5 too hard it will not harm the amp, but to keep in mind that the output devices can become stressed on the 2 channels being used. Remember that the XPA-5 only has 6 output devices per channel, whereas the XPA-2 uses 12 per channel. So if your intended usage would push the amps hard you would be better off with the XPA-2. You could overload the output devices on the XPA-5 and shorten their life, if you drive them too hard. Lonnie said that they removed the data from the Product Pages so as not to encourage abuse of the amps by those hobbyist who always push their amps beyond their designed capacity. There are always a few who will not or cannot exercise common sense.

thanks road runner for the info. Im starting to think that instead of trying to get some low end back out of my mains. I could just get another ed a5-350 and an xpa-5. This hobby drives me nuts. Im always wanting new things, get them then sale them then want something else. I f I had the maney I would get xpa-1's and an xpa-5 and another a5-350. lol

What about getting an xpa-2 for the mains - and continue to use the avr for powering the remaing speakers? It shoulds like you have that AVR powering almost adequately now.ything now - so offleading the L / R will allow all that AVR power to be split amongst the remaing speakers... And the L /R will have xpa-2 goodness where I think it counts.
