I am new to this having separate amps power my system but I am really getting into this. My questions is, in the next 1-2 years I will get a pre-amp that is 9.2. I would like to get two (2) XPA-5 Amps to power my system. For now, I will only be using seven (7) channels and use my AVR for the pre-amp.
Is this over kill? I did look at mixing up the amps to total 9 channels, but cost wise, its cheaper to buy two (2) XPA-5's.
I understand I will not use one channel, would this have any negative effect on the amp?
Thanks for your help.

Your way of thinking is excellent; I would do the exact same myself. Another option (depending of all the loudspeakers used in your setup) is one XPA-5, one XPA-2 for your two front mains, and an UPA-2 for the two back surrounds.

Welcome to the lounge! Yeah, dual XPA-5 amplifiers would be an excellent solution for powering a 9.X channel system. Having an open channel will not hurt anything. Especially if that particular amplifier is only powering surround channels. The only risk ran by leaving a channel open is heat build up due to the amplifier not being designed to throw off the extra heat generated by sending more current to the channels in use. With surround usage, the current draw will not be much. No issues should arise. Good luck with whatever you choose.

No ill effects at all not using one of those channels. I actually plan on not using 2 of my XPA-5 channels when my XPA-2 arrives on Friday, though when I do go 7.1, those two channels will be back in use. For now the XPA-2 will handle the fronts and the XPA-5 will handle the center and rears.

Nice set-up Fire-Dragon. I love my XPA-2 with my Def Tech set-up. Enjoy!

I would walk five hundred miles if Emotiva would give us such a beast. PLease, send them an email with you request. Cost you nothing. If though shall ask, though might get. See my post in "processors" Me, I'd like to use it as a 10.2 with two XPR-5. You know three XPA-3 would be an option for you? (Although you don't save money nore space)

One last question. Is there anything I should be looking out for when I hook up my amps? They will be here today?

I had to pay somebody to get them out of their boxes and then another guy to put them in the rack with all my other Emo equipment. They are monstrously heavy and that has a lot to do with their excellent performance.

And if you are prone to hernias, use caution for...other areas...also. (As a triple hernia patient, I can vouch for that)

They are heavy but I got them out of the boxes and hooked them up. These amps are awesome and they sound amazing. After I put them through their paces, I went out to check the mail, a neighbor from 2 houses over asked me what I was doing. He said he could hear my stereo from his house and we all live on pretty big lots. Have had a few comments from neighbors, 1 neighbor is upset but most are envious.
Thanks for your help.

Rather Texas is such a small state that he is likely to live just a hop, skip, and a jump down the road from you. ;D ;D ;D Just have him turn up the volume on his new amp and you can follow the sound up to his front door.

Same as you. SA.
Finally broke out the meter and finished setup of the speakers. Sounds even better.
