Bill Schnee … yeah, me neither. But it turns out this guy (now 78 years old) was the recording engineer on Ringo’s first solo album. So there he was at around 26 years old sitting at the console with George, John and Ringo behind him.
He knew a guy who was doing some direct to disc recordings, so he engineered Thelma Houston’s I’ve Got The Music In Me. He thinks Fagan and Becker must have heard that, and they hired him to engineer Aja. So they had Steve Gadd for three days to cut all the rhythm tracks. Aja was two takes, but he thinks when they mixed it they only used the first take. None of Gadd’s drum breaks were written or in the rehearsals … so what’s on the record was one take, including the accidental stick click that was right on the beat. Gadd had no idea there would be a sax solo added over it. Meanwhile, a producer friend of Schnee heard Gadd was in town and wanted to record a couple tracks. Schnee relented and gave him two hours. Gadd’s drums were set up and the sound was the same sound as for Aja … on, of all things, Leo Sayer’s You Make Me Feel Like Dancing. And over the years he recorded everyone from Barbara Streisand to Miles Davis.
It’s long with a lot of engineer talk. But I found it interesting. If you go back to Beato’s YouTube page there are interviews with others who worked on Aja, including Gadd.
And of course I'll be giving Aja another listen later today. I've been wanting to compare the SACD to the 2023 remaster.

Edit - this was a great interview.

Pressure Cooker was the best recording I had ever heard. Lincoln Mayorga and Distinguished Colleagues was also very good.

A stereo mic and musicians playing together in a room. As it should be. Some of the best recordings ever made.

Some wild surround on this SACD, considering it's a jazz disc ... especially on the first track.

Spinning some vinyl...Steely Dan Gaucho. Sounds nice on my old Thorens TD 166 MKII through my Prima Luna tube amp and Maggies.
