12.08.09 I've loved Chris Cornell's voice since I first heard a local band that would become Soundgarden in a Seattle club in the early 80's. Some of these tunes are pretty weak and remind me that Chris does his best work when he's surrounded by other strong musicians, such as in Audioslave. But at least six others are real gems. To me the highlight of the collection is his reading of the Michael Jackson hit "Billie Jean." Chris turns this song into a mournful, angry lament and brings 10 times more power and soul to the song than Michael's pop-dance version. The version here kicks your ass instead of trying to make you move it. Overall, a 3-to-3.5 star effort, and worth checking out if you like Chris Cornell's voice.

This has since been remastered on Island Records and I still have the Capricorn so another upgrade to be had. Dreams, Whipping Post, Don't Keep me Wondering, Elizabeth Reed, Please call Home friggin still have their magic. roo rating A+

I really like the eels and if you have not ventured there I would recommend Beautiful Freak, Blinking Lights and yes Shootenanny! Today, it is Shootenanny and this is a diverse album with some great pop songs like Saturday Morning, some ballads, some blues type numbers and it all flows very well. The tune "Numbered Days " is a personal favorite. I must also say that I am not sure where my head was at the last decade in not thinking what the possibilities were with high fidelity but this XPA-3, ERC-1 and USP-1 plus the Rocket Sub has turned my listening world quite literally upside down. I have posted on the eels and Mark Everett before and I am quite the fan! I like the voice, composition and style of this gentleman's music! Ah dew recommend the eels! roo rating: A

I have all but one or two of the Matt Johnson THE THE projects. I like his style certainly not mainstream but I do like it. For some reason the first tracks on a few of his albums are way out there and track one on this one is no different. This is a great album minus track 1 so 11 out of 12 is not bad. ;D roo rating: B+

Another worthy band lost in obscurity! This is their second of three releases. There is a lot of creativity in their work and they shift from fast, hard pounding rock to ballads through this 19 song collection. I recommend this CD and the Meadowlands which I had posted sometime back! roo rating: B+ Well maybe not lost in Obscurity as much as label problems that locked them from producing any works with another label for 7 years. Here is a bio excerpt........... Biography One of the best bands with the worst luck, New Jersey's the Wrens were establishing themselves as one of the catchiest and most thoughtful indie rock groups of the '90s when label problems prevented them from releasing another album for seven years. The group -- guitarist/vocalist Charles Bissell, guitarist Greg Whelan, bassist/vocalist Kevin Whelan, and drummer Jerry MacDonnell..........more on Amazon

This is a very hard to find New Age disk or maybe even light jazz but soooooooo good! It has been out of print for a few years but I think you should try and get whatever is available at a good price. My wife liked the previous disk so much she wanted more this evening and I pulled this John Jarvis piece out. I bought is back in the Eighties and still love it. It is upbeat with nice compliments of bass and drums to go with the piano and synthesizers. This is a beautiful recording each and every song! I ended up having to play this twice tonight for her but we really enjoyed it. ;D

Thanks....hope you are also a Zeppelin fan because to tell you the truth John Paul's influence is the one that comes through the most. Definitely not a bad thing but I wasn't expecting him to be to be THE chief and for the Josh and Dave to be the indians. In fact makes me wonder if he didn't have more of a hand in Zep's fame than we have been led to believe. Not entirely unrelated; this hasn't been a banner year for good hard rock and honestly this has to be among the top ten albums of the year.
