I seem to be getting some low level hum coming out of the speakers. I am using it for a two channel audio system, no HT. If I dissconnect everything except speaker wires (I am using 4 of the 5 channels) there is no hum, as soon as I attach two or more interconnects the hum starts. Even if the cables are not connected to UPS-1. I tried every possible combination to try to isolate it, nothing seems to work. I am thinking the amp may be defective. Anybody have any idea what is going on? I went and tried all the recomended things for ground loop problems. I tried plug wire on the amp with no ground pin, USP-1 pluged in un pluged no differance.
Thanks Frank

What interconnects are you using? ...Are they shielded.

Try to move them around, and away from tuners or coaxial cables from Cable or Satellite boxes. ...You know, so they don't act as antennas. That might help to get rid of that hum.

Hi I tried moving the cables around I even tried putting the amp all by it self, no change. My second XPA-5 should be here tomorrow, I am curious to see if it does the same thing. The Ati 6012 amp that I was using previously had no hum.
I disconnected the cable, that did not work. I will try disconnecting the cable ground outside tomorrow and see what happens.
Thanks for everyones suggestions.
Frank

Good luck Frank! Thanks, but unfortunately I still have the problem. I disconnected the cable ground right from the outside ground rod. I am thinking that it is the amp itself. I am hoping I didn't get another returned unit as the box was pretty beat up. My UPS-1 came as an open box with dead battery's and screws missing from remote. They did quickly send me a replacement unit and all was fine with the second one. I was happy with the service I received so I decided to order two XPA-5"s. Hopefully The second one will be here today and I can see what happens before I call Emo. Frank

Hopefully it's not the amp; but you never know... Let us know Frank.

Hopefully it's not the amp; but you never know... Let us know Frank. An update on the hum I am having. The other XPA-5 came yesterday and it has the same hum. I have pretty much ruled out ground loop for several reasons. One, I disconnected cable ground right at the outside ground rod. Two, it happens in all locations with in the house and I even tried it at my girlfriends place. Three, the hum happens with just the amp plugged in and once I put more than one interconnect the hum starts weather the interconnect is connected on the other end or not. I also noticed the amp has no internal ground pin so ground loop should not be an issue? Am I wrong about this? I noticed the transformers are pretty noisy so I put an oscope on the outputs and the trace was very noisy as well with high spikes. I compared it to all the other amps, receivers I have (total of four) all are dead quiet mechanically and sonically. I did try many different scenario's which had little or no affect until I tried a friends high priced double shielded Cardas interconnects. It did quiet it down quiet a bit, but not all. To me this also tells me the problem is the amp. To me this is not an acceptable remedy as I shouldn't have to spend more on cables than the amps themselves when I did not need them before. I must say I am very disappointed so far after trying to upgrade my system and now having hum. The positive is that the amps sound great so that makes it even more disappointing. I wish I did a little more research before buying because I see that this issue has come up many many times before and I cant seem to find any happy ending or endings at all. There are people out there not having this issue with theses amps I would like to be among them. I will call tech support but I cant see how they can help other than replacing them with units with quiet transformers. Frank

Frank, you can try Lock-on Ferrite beads. Open the XPA-5's top cover and try some on different set of wires, including the AC power one, at or near the rear wall.

Frank, DO NOT open your unit and start slapping on ferrite beads or any other such nonsense. Simply return the amps and buy something else. Marantz makes some very nice amps, as do H/K, NAD, and many others. The XPAs are clearly defective in your setup...

Yep, definitely not worth trying to fix it yourself. Get another one shipped out to you, or go with something else. Outlaw makes a killer amp. It will cost you more, but it's worth a shot. Or if you don't need 200 watts, look for an NAD T-955 for about the same price as the XPA. It's "only" 100x5, but it's a great amp.

And double shielded ones with my XPA-5. {Did you try some quality XLR interconnects?} I use lock-on ferrite beads in some of my AC power cords, and inside some of my components. They make Total Sense as they work fabulously! * My system is quiet as a dead duck!

Bob: I don't think it's wise to tell someone to start opening up a high voltage amplifier and start fiddling with it if they don't know what they might be doing. It could be fatal.

Well, it is obvious that you do that with the amp disconnected.
By the way, Marantz, Yamaha, McIntosh, Denon, NAD, Arcam, and many more manufacturers use lock-on ferrite beads in their electronic components.

Neekos, I was simply asking straight up here.
I am very sensitive when it comes to critical advice that are on a personal level. In particular when there is no valid reason for it.
