I was just looking at the diagram of the xlr cable, just wondered why it denotes 2 wires instead of 3...
it might be a diagram oversight though just wanting to know whether it is a 2-wire or 3-wire configuration

The two main wires go to two of the connections and the copper shield will go to the ground (3rd connection) in the XLR.

My understanding is that the ground is wired to the shielding.

I was looking at the wiring diagram for emo xlr cables..
they indicated 2-wire not standard 3-wire that i would of expected to see on a xlr-xlr cable...
the ground to the shielding i understand if i were to use xlr-rca conversion cables.. though xlr-xlr i would of expected to see a 3-wire shielded cable something equivilent to 10-15 amp power cable..

It is not done that way on any of the XLR cables I have ever used. They all did it the same way Emotiva is doing it. The Emotiva has two shields, and the copper shield is connected to the ground.

I thought you were well read in hi-fi and posted at AVS as well as here? What did they tell you at that forum?

Anyway, from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balanced_audio: "A typical balanced cable contains two identical wires, which are twisted together and then wrapped with a third conductor (foil or braid) that acts as a shield." The Belden 1800F that Blue Jeans Cable uses for their balanced interconnects is also shielded twisted pair:

Nope, he's well versed in HT and hi-fi with several subscriptions to many periodicals on the subject. He is also a well respected member of several audio forums such as AVS. Or, so he said in a different post. And, he's never wrong; because when he's wrong he always comes back and says so (from a different post).

to be honest i never posed the xlr question until now..
go and look on the fricken diagram on the xlr spec page in the shop, that's why i asked the question initially stiehl as I did not know looking at the site richguy posted and comparing it to the emo diagram and the emo looks different.. the illustration kind of made me think of a xlr-rca cable that was all!!!
I haven't really dealt in xlr cables before I started asking about them..
my field of connection has been purely based on rca-rca connection...

What "field of connection" would that be?

The reason ausman knows so much is because he asks questions when he doesn't know, and says "I don't know" instead of guessing.
Isn't that how we all learn? I know I do, and I have a lot left to learn.

Nope, not being sarcastic at all. There is nothing I appreciate more than honesty, especially when I go into a store selling electronics. If a salesperson says "I don't know, I'll go ask," or "I didn't know that," I appreciate their honesty. You can't learn if you don't ask.

I agree completely on sales people.Too many times I have caught them BSing me rather than admitting that they don't know the answer.I respect them much more if they say "I don't know, but I will find out."

You're not too familiar with ausman's "recommendations" then; when, because he read it somewhere, he feels obligated to inform the OP of a thread about what they should spend their money on when on a budget. I'm sure that, considering his previous posts (more than one) where pulling several thousands of dollars out of the tail on a limited budget is an easy thing, what he ends up with will be nothing short of the best that he's recommended to others in the past. In particular I remember someone posting about which amps were needed for a limited budget and about 700 square foot of space with efficient speakers and he recommended bi-amped XPA-1s (or something like that). By way of comparison, with only a XPA-2 and 5 for his 7 channels (far less than his required 11.2 setups he's recommended) his HT room should be about the size of a closet. Personally, from what he's publicly stated about the gear that he currently has, I don't know why he doesn't go for something like Phase Technology's DP-2000 (with 16 channels of 250w and Audyssey) and some nice dArts speakers. It gives him exactly what he's recommended to others at a fraction of the cost. This would take care of his speakers and amp(s) solution while adding the XMC-1 to do everything else. The dArts system has been well received by the audiophile press with numerous good reviews and owners around the world. Hell, he might even best my set up! ;D A couple different dArts set ups just went on Audiogon recently for a fraction of what they cost new.

I was only referring to knowledge of facts; recommendations are merely opinions, and everybody has one. ;D
