Hey there, I am trying to assemble an inexpensive table top system for a laptop in the kitchen. I don't have a lot of room so I am looking for the smallest sub possible - so far this is the smallest I am able to find: www.nuforce.com/hp/products/subwoofer/index.phpIs there any other sub out there around this size that has any resemblance of quality for less $$$. Here's what I got so far: Laptop Audio Engine N22 Amp HRT Music Streamer II DAC JRiver MC17 playback Paradigm Millenia 2.0 speakers Thanks

for less $$ no. But there are smaller subs that are actually real subs.
Velodyne Impact-Mini Mirage MM-6 Polk PSW111 Yamaha YST-SW050 Cambridge Audio S80 are a few examples.

Check out Grant Fidelity they actually have some desktop systems that are compact and unique looking. i think they even offer a 30 day in home trial.

Size, bass, spl/sensitivity.
You always have a tradeoff. Restrictions on one affect the others. A tiny cabinet like this one necessarily keeps it from playing low and loud.

Probably the smallest sub out there that is a genuine subwoofer is the Sunfire Super Junior.

Only slight larger is the Definitive Technology Super Cube III.

Only slight larger is the Definitive Technology Super Cube III. According to the listed specs, the Def Tech is 10.25" square and the Sunfire is 9" square. I've never even see the Def Tech so I can't comment on it, but I do know the Sunfire produces pretty amazing low bass for something that small.

An alternative to using small satellite speakers and a small sub woofer to use with your computer is the Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 4. This self powered little jewel provides amazing sound quality with very strong bass. IIRC its frequency range is like 50Hz to 27KHz; and its built-in amp is 50 W RMS.
At the last Emofest, the Airmotiv 4 was the hit of the show. It blew people over that such a tiny little box could produce such a huge sound. It looks to me like the perfect computer speaker system for an audiophile. You might just want to take a pair out for a spin, using Emotiva's 30-day trial period.

Slightly bigger, but a used Martin Logan Dynamo (original) for 250.00 would be well worth it. One of my favorite subs for music considering it's only around 12" square.

Wow, that Sunfire sounds amazing - and that's about my size limit 9x9x9. It is expensive but if I can find one used - want to spend somewhere around $200.
The other one I was looking at was the Mirage mm-6 or 8. Probably not as good as the Sunfire buuuut.......
The sub is sitting under a really small counter 30" wide and you have to have room for your feet when you're sitting at the laptop. The width isn't really the issue it's the depth (anything deeper than 9" starts to run into your feet/shins).

I don't believe its the new model but it will probably be the only one around your price range app.audiogon.com/listings/sunfire-junior-subwoofer--2

$300 for sunfire! dang it man! .....Hey here is my suggestion. 1 - elemental designs has a shallow sub for $70. www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_21&products_id=1062 - Dayton Audio Sub at parts express $120 www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-8033 - The box option A: build a box yourself if you can option B: go to local car stereo shop and ask them build you a nice flat box w/no carpet and work the amp in there too .bring it home paint it black you're done option C: Local Stereo shop, one box for the Sub alone so it's flat and small a second box for the amp so you can put it on the table or somewhere else and just run the wires to the sub ( in this case you can buy a box from elemental design pre build for a flat sub) bottom line....somewhere under $400 but it'll be highly customized and look like a $1000 job or just get that Sunfire at $300 plus shipping and call it a day ..and hope it doesn't blow out. if you're here in Socal...come by I'll sell you a Defenitive tech w/a 700W-amp slim sub for $350 . Good Luck Doc
