And keep in mind that the capacitance is independent of the transformer's rating. The transformer can kick out whatever, the capacitance determines how much power is available instantaneously to the amp. Keep in mind that it takes time to charge a capacitor, so if you have too wimpy a transformer, it will not be able to replenish the capacitors quickly enough...

I had mentioned before that the transformer spec had to be wrong. They did the same thing way back with the xpa-5 which was listed as a 1600va transformer but was really a 1200va.

Well, I can tell you that if I bought a product that did not have the specified transformer in it and had one of much lesser value, I would be returning it promptly and would probably never buy another piece from that mfgr. Emo has been bad about providing *complete* specs, but I'm not aware that they have published un-true specs... -RW- I don't think it was intentionally untrue. It originally had capacitance as 45000 per rail as well. It was probably an oversight in the original proofreading and has since been corrected. Chalk it up as, a combination of the instant nature of the Internet and crazed fans watching the site religiously (me included ;D). In the end it really makes this kind of proofing error get more attention than it should.

When I look at the UPA-500 and the XPA-3, it is hard to believe that these two have the same transformer-size.. The XPA-3 is twice the fysical size..

If the amp had a 850va power supply but only put out a max 450watts wouldnt that make it a very inefficient design? I would guess its a 450va transformer. My problem with the misprints is not so much with the upa-500 which was pulled pretty quickly but rather the fact that that the xpa-5 was listed as such over and over again. When I pointed it out I had a couple members comment about me just not understanding amp design. I do know if i bought a car that was listed as having 160 hp but ended up only having 120 I would have been pretty PO'ed even if I couldnt tell the difference in daily driving. Now all that being said I really liked the xpa-5 and have had 3 of them so to me it was still a great amp. I just would think that the amp specks would be gone over a a little more carefully before posting them. I still think Emotiva is a great company but in this regard they could do a little better.

I have a feeling it's a misprint. The UPA-7 had an 850VA transformer, and the UPA-5 had a 600VA transformer, both of these had more power output than the UPA-500.

6 years ago Onkyo and many brands still put a decent amp in their receivers. Not long after that when for example, they went from the 805 to the 806, the weight of the receiver went way down and the ratings went from 5 channels operating to 2 channels. Current Onkyo entry level receivers would not be this strong. It's funny. 10 years ago when I bought my receiver, people said the exact same thing about the "good ol' days". And my $1500 Onkyo receiver back in 2002 was only rated 2 channels at a time. (took a lot of space to list all 7 that way) If you are correct about the 805 being rated 5 at a time in their marketing material, it was probably an anomaly rather than the end of an era. Mine was the 2nd highest-end Onkyo of the time, but also the precursor to the current high end line. They dropped the top series, which was hardware upgradeable. (not that they ever released any upgrades)

It would be nice to get some reports about those cooling fans. If they can be made audible and under what circumstances. Any owners care to give the UPA-500 a good test drive and place their ear against the amp afterwards?

Any amp that *needs* a fan does not have adequate heatsinks....Or it's a pure Class-A, something I would never buy anyway.

I have my amp plug in 24/7... I had the amp now for over a month and I have never heard the cooling fans. I have small speakers but sometimes I drive them over 90db at 9 feet and never heard the cooling fans. I also want to mention that my amp is on an open space rack.

Well Fellow Loungers,
I just took the plunge and purchased the UPA-500 amp today for my HT system. I'm going to mate it with an Anthem AVM 20 processor (v2.21) that I picked up on Ebay in mint condition. I can't wait to integrate both into my system! It's going to replace my NAD T744 receiver, which has done a great job. And while the NAD certainly is no slouch when it comes to dynamics and sound quality, I wanted a bit more flexibility in the processor section as well as slightly more power. The UPA-500 will allow me to do just that, and with Emotiva's Summer Sale going on, it just allowed me to do it quite a bit cheaper! I just wish they could put the amp in a telepod and send it to me right now! ;D!

You know Emotiva has a "Beam It Up" delivery, apparently you didn't take advantage! Let us know how the AVM 20 and UPA-500 work out together.

They retired the UPA-1 without any warning? Wow. I have 2 AVRs and the lesser of the two, the Onkyo TX SR504, can equal the performance of the UPA-500, so I wouldn't be interested in it. Perhaps they'll have a 2 channel that can do better. It's been on clearance for several months.... this indicates it is coming to end of life. So, no surprises. We're sold out of the old model. As I mentioned, there are replacements in the works, so no one is being left out in the cold. As to the UPA-500's power capabilities being equal to your Onkyo, SR504, let's give them a run shall we?? I know that amp quite well and the UPA-500 will easily outperform it. Not knocking Onkyo at all, just stating a fact... and you'll be able to touch it all the while without burning your hand. Just messing with you a little! Dan, I'm sure that I can speak for all Emotiva owners who live in the south by saying a big thank you for producing value priced high performance amplifiers that are really quite air-conditioned room friendly.

Big Dan is right, the Onkyo is no match for a good, separate amp(s). The only receiver I've seen that has true balls is the CineNova Grande and that is one expen$ive receiver...

I imagine the Anthem improves things quite a bit all by itself.

I imagine the Anthem improves things quite a bit all by itself. Sharkman, Well, I finally got things setup with my UPA-500, but I had a bit of a problem with the Anthem. I thought I would upgrade the software on the Anthem to v2.21, but the upgrade process didn't go very well (didn't know about a recommended Serial-to-USB adapter [Tripp Lite USA-19HS] until I already attempted the upgrade with another adapter) and now the Anthem is locked-up and won't turn on. So, I've got to send it in to Anthem for repair. That's the bad news. I don't understand why Anthem didn't include a hard reset-type feature on the AVM 20 to bring the unit back to functionality just for situations like this. I've owned lesser pieces of equipment and all of them could do this. The good news? Well, I hooked up the UPA-500 to my NAD T744's preamp outputs and....WOW! I thought the NAD brought out the nuances and dynamics in my music/video, but I wasn't prepared for the noticeable difference the UPA-500 produced, especially right out of the box!! I'm hearing low-level detail in music that I know I heard with the NAD, but the new amp just brought them that much more into focus. It's as if a veil was removed while listening to the Emotiva amp. I am VERY pleasantly surprised, especially knowing that I bought this amp on Emotiva's Summer Sale. ;D I can't imagine how much better the UPA-500 is going to sound after it breaks in somewhat. I must have spent the entire afternoon yesterday (wife and kid were out of town ;D) playing all of my favorite music and videos (see attached home theater pic) and hearing more presence in them than I did with the NAD. Taking nothing away from the NAD, which is easily one of the better sounding receivers I've owned (even despite being an entry-level receiver), but it's obvious that a separate amp is better at doing its job than any receiver can. The NAD puts out 50w/ch all channels driven into 4/8 ohms, so it's got the guts. Heck, I'd even put it up against any 80-100 w/ch recent offering from Denon, Yamaha or Pioneer. But this UPA-500 is in a whole different realm and is easily the best purchase I've made in audio. It's even a bonus that it runs cool, too. I once owned an Onkyo 875 (a monster receiver) for about a year before I sold it because I was afraid it would go Chernobyl on me it ran that hot. All that heat is eventually going to take its toll on the electronics. Now, all I need to do is get the Anthem AVM 20 fixed. I can't wait to hear what it will sound like when I integrate it into my system. But, at least this way, I know that the difference in what I'm hearing now is due to the Emotiva amp and not the AVM 20. All I can say is, "Way to go Dan!" You hit a grand-salami with this amp!
