Hi Everyone, I am looking at buying a good quality sub for my theater set up. I want to use them for both music and movies. My current set up is in a small room (10X12), but looking at moving it to my living room in the future (15X20). The sound treatment is on its way primacustics london kit 12A for the small room. This is what I was looking at but I am open to suggestions. www.epiksubwoofers.com/dualempire.htmlThanks guys! Eric

I have been pleased with my Epiks. Some others to look at are eD, Rythmik, HSU, SVS, Emotiva, or some may persuade you to go DIY. Lots of options.
The Empire is going to be quite a large sub in that size room, especially duals. You may want to look at a single Legend from Epik.

In addition to the above mentioned, REL and Selah Audio subs are also quite nice.

I also have really enjoyed my Epik subs. Though I'm not a fan of the heat that is produced by the Legend amps, so I keep a fan on each of them as a precaution.

I'm building two F25 subs. I have two empty enclosures waiting on Rythmik to release their new HX800 amps. I also recommend Rythmik for music and HT after owning a down-firing DS1500 for two years. Dave.

Another consideration is sealed vs. ported sub. Sealed subs are less boomy than ported subs and integrate well with monitor front speakers for music, while doing a good job with HT applications. Ported subs have the potential to shake the house in HT.

Eric I would go for a sub with built-in room equalization capabilities , e.g., Velodyne. velodyne.com/subwoofers.html

Though this is certainly not the best value for money and I can think of better options money wise and maybe performance wise. You usually don't see much bigger enclosures than this and it is sealed and goes down to 13 hz +/- 1 <COUGH> ONE!! db. www.axiomaudio.com/ep800.html

I like a subwoofer that can hear but not feel as it can over power the mids and highs.

Being able to feel the impact is part of the experience. Low notes automatically generate vibrations you can feel. Live music and things in real life are the same way.

Generally it said that bass sounds below 20Hz cannot be heard but only felt. From 20-80Hz they can be felt and heard, but not localized as above 80Hz.
If a sub is over powering the mids and highs, then either one has the sub not setup and blended properly or the source material was not recorded properly, unless that was the specific intention of the performance or recording engineer (not the fault of the sub).
