@pk, the MMGs have a 30 day money back guarantee, right? You could listen to them for another week and then save for some used 3.6s

I hate these types of decisions... I can never decide what the best option would be.

I know what you mean...I strongly considered the 3.7's myself. I was concerned they were too big for my room.

Just be happy, very happy with your awesome 1.7s. Sure you could upgrade your speakers AGAIN, but you're already so far ahead with your 1.7s, that you'll be hard pressed to really do that much better. Also, I doubt that that the 3.7s are "all that" comparatively, and the top of the line 20.7s are not at all cheap. Time to enjoy re-listening to your entire music collection imo. You'll be surprised at how much better most of it sounds on your Maggies, especially if you also have a high quality DAC to go with with all this... A bit about room placement, the Maggies need to be away from the back walls 3-6'. If you cannot do that for some reason, put some diffusion behind them on the walls. If you don't have any good QRD diffusers, at least put some absorption (foam) behind them on the walls and in the corners.

@ RClark Thanks for the link to your review. It really does seem as if the Epiks could certainly be a VERY nice ( and affordable) alternative to the Rythmiks. I certainly plan on doing some more looking at them, and am considering the selling of my two Ultra Sub 12s to help get me there. ;D @ Mark I agree with the others. Enjoy your new 1.7s and don't look back. You did your "homework", and audition in the best possible manner. Even going so far as to take your own rig to the store. I am just a very indecisive person (it takes me 3 hours at the video store just to pick out a rental ) and am always second guessing my decisions, or worried that if I had waited just a bit longer, I could have made "dramatic" improvements in my system. @ Greenkiwi Unfortunately, at the moment, I have a very small listening room, but it is only a temporary situation. I expect that when I get moved again, I will have a large listening room (or large living room) to place everything in. I am keeping an eye out, though. I couple of weeks ago I saw some very nice looking 3.6s in Chicago for $2400. I thought that was pretty good deal, but I just didn't have the funds available to get them. The way it looks at the moment, I am (probably) just going to keep the MMGs, and get them "Gunned" with the Magnestand mod. I have not yet had any real time to sit down and listen to them yet (sadly), but I should be able to here in a couple of days. I am hoping to at least have 2 days of solid critical listening time with them, and that will be when the decision is made to either send them back (to save for some used 3.6s), or keep them in place and sell my B&W 684s.

PK, they are phenomenal subs, out of this world. If they weren't, no problem, I didn't spend much, on to the next choice. I'm buying more of them.

Mark I am buying tomorrow a upa-2 and i am getting some mg-12,s. then I am getting those gunned in January. Do you know or think the upa-2 is enough watts for them? My living room is about 144 square feet, pretty small. Wonder if I still need a xpa-2 to push them? Thanks

Thanks, rclark! Glad to help...Laurence and others egged me on, and I was enjoying reporting. So they all deserve thanks also.
Matthew1975...I can't really speak to your question as I don't have experience w/that combo and have not really researched it. Also, the answer depends on what types of music/volume you like. Unless you are major "head banger/rock it out at stadium levels", the UPA-2 should be fine. If you find the UPA-2 limited...there might be a mint-condition XPA-2 for sale on the Lounge next month...(mine, see my ncore build thread...). That is, unless I decide to keep it to pair w/my old B&W's!!!

Matt, I am using a UPA2 to drive my 1.6's without any problems in a room larger than the one in question. I have not noticed any compression of the sound or loss of detail. But if you can swing it I would get the higher power.

My living room is about 144 square feet, pretty small. Wonder if I still need a xpa-2 to push them? Thanks Remember that Magnepan magnetic planars with quasi-ribbon tweeters (MMG, 12, 1.6, 2.7, and the 3.6 and 20.1 with ribbon tweeters and QR midrange) go from about 86dB/1w/1m sensitivity to about 92dB/1w/1m when "Gunned". So a UPA-2 at 185 wpc into 4 Ohms should be more than adequate in that room. When I heard Magnestand MG12s next to $17,000 Vandersteen 5As they were every bit as good except in the bottom octave. However, they were both being driven by Pass Labs X250s.
