Thanks for looking into it. I like the idea of thermal equilibrium rather than a full on revert to class AB So am I gathering that the class A bias can move where it wants the transition to class AB where it wants to depending on temperature?

Long story short, both my XPA-1L's are doing it too.
The conditions:
This is in a 67 degree room with freshly unboxed amps, so it took a little longer than Dark Ranger's experience. I unboxed the amps and let them adjust to room temp for about 60 min. The amps were placed on the floor about 20 inches in front of my HT rack. There was about 10 inches between them and nothing else close to them at all.
I have a Monster Power Pro 3500 power center in my HT that shows amperage draw as well as voltage at the wall plate. I unplugged the receiver from the power center and left the rest of the stuff connected to it.
The test:
With just my HT stuff plugged in, and all of it off or in standby mode, the power center reports that the equipment is pulling between .1 and .2 amps. It fluctuates back and forth.
With the XPA-1L's plugged into the high current outlets and both amps in A/B mode the power center reports 1.1 amps.
Switching 1 amp to class A mode raises the amp draw to 2.4 amps. Switching the second amp to class A mode raises the number to 3.4 amps.
The reading steps down a few times and is at 3.2 amps at 1 minute.
At 4 minutes it's at 3.0 amps.
There is MINOR ticking as the heat sinks warm up.
At anytime between turning the power on and the 13 minute point, switching either amp to class A/B made the meter drop about 1 full amp. Switching both amps to Class A/B made the meter drop about 2 full amps. Switching back to class A made the meter return to it's previous readout.
At 8 minutes it's at 2.9 amps and remains there until about the 13 minute mark.
At 13 minutes there is a very faint click from the left amp and the meter drops to 2.0 amps. At this point the A/B switch on this amp no longer causes the gauge to change readings. Moving the switch on the other amp still causes the meter to drop about 1 full amp.
From 13 to 15 minutes the ammeter reads 2.0 amps
At about 15 minutes, there is a very faint click from the right amp and the meter falls to 1.1 amps. The A-A/B switch on this amp no longer affects the reading on the ammeter.
Notes:
The click I heard as each amp apparently cycled out of class A is very quiet. If I were not listening for it, I'd probably miss it. It does sound to me like a relay or switch though. It's not the same as the heat expansion clicks.
Both of the amps reached what I would call a warm temperature ( a precise, technical term). Niether was anywhere near hot. With my hand on top of the amp (I only did this after the test) it was "cozy warm" (another technical term). I could leave my hand there indefinitely and it wouldn't have ever become uncomfortable at that temp. My Onkyo TX-NR 3009 receiver definitely runs a lot hotter than these amps got in this test.
I never hooked the amps into any system. I simply do not have time for that today.
This is a major bummer for me. I was real excited about these amps. The Class A feature meant more to me than the balanced design.
Really stinks because I ordered a new rack for my stereo that doesn't really work with a 4 RU amp. I never was really impressed with the XPA-100's. That's why I bought the XPA-2.
Oh well I will wait with the rest of the early adopters to see what Lonnie thinks.

I know the feeling when you get something unexpected. I'm sure they sound great even on Class A/B mode (most people can't tell the difference in sound quality from Class A, but yeah that's besides the point). Until this issue is resolve you can still enjoy them. Look at the bright sideā¦ in the meantime you'll be saving on electrical bill

Thank you Keith and Big Dan for dropping in. Thank you audiophill and ocezam for confirming my findings. I appreciate the extra time to perform the test and write up the results. It appears that I'm not crazy. In the meantime, try to enjoy your amps. They sound pretty amazing. Cheers, Big Dan Oh, I most certainly am! ;D For now, I've been running in A/B mode and have gone through several movies, TV show episodes, and concerts. More on the agenda for tonight!

So, it's safe to assume you ran an A/B test on your gear? Sorry, could not resist <g>.
And I sure hope Emo can shed some light on this. It sounds (pun intended) to me like they definitely have a problem. What the hell, Lonnie was already wasting 3-4 hours a day sleeping...

Just because their amps clck too doesn't mean that you're not crazy Stop assaulting my denial with your facts! My psychiatrist says I'm going to be just fine once the voices go away. So, it's safe to assume you ran an A/B test on your gear? Sorry, could not resist <g>. Ha!! You're such a wise guy. ;D Liking this company more and more. Says something about them that they post to this forum on a weekend. The whole Emotiva gang are great folks and I love doing business with them. Big Dan genuinely cares about his customers and his products. For that reason (and many others), I've become a life-long customer.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the feedback. This will be the first thing we look into on Monday. We will not ship anymore of these units until we fully understand what is happening.
Whatever it is, I'm sure it's a minor issue and we'll get it cleared up quickly. It might be as simple as a bias adjustment from the factory.
If you already have a unit and it needs to be corrected, we'll send replacements for you with call tags and you can return your units after you receive the new ones, if this turns out to be the way we need to proceed.
Sorry for the inconvenience. We'll fix it. We're Emotiva, by golly!!
Happy St. Patty's Day!!
And on a personal note, God bless our dear Uncle Terry; we'll have a shot for you tonight in your memory.
Peace out, Big Dan

Big Dan/Lonnie, What has the Emotiva "brain trust" found that is causing the anomaly with the early shipping XPA-1L power amps??? Inquiring minds want to know.
