Hi - my home theater is coming along (slower than expected) - during the last Emotiva sale I purchased the following Emotiva ERT 8.3 Reference Towers (2) Emotiva ERM 6.3 LCR Monitor (1) Emotiva UMC-1 Processor (1) Emotiva XPA-5 Amplifier (1) Emotiva XPA-2 Amplifier (1) and also I have four Paradigm ADP390 speakers. My home theater has 9' ceilings, is 13' wide (on the screen wall) and is 19' long. There is a 1' high elevated platform for seating that extends 6' 6" from the rear wall towards the screen, so the plan is to have seating at the rear of the lower level also. So, the final piece of the puzzle now appears to be the subwoofer (or subwoofers?). I looked at the SVS cylindrical subwoofer pc12nsd, the ported counterpart pb12nsd - and then of course there is the Emotiva XREF 12 DSP. Do you suppose there would be any advantage to staying with Emotiva and getting the XREF dsp? I think I will stay with the UMC-1 (as opposed to "upgrading to the Xmc1 when it becomes available) so I would really appreciate your feedback! The room is totally closed off, so if possible I would like to save some cash and get 1 subwoofer .... but if 2 would be a night and day difference ... well, you know how that goes! I think we will be using the room for 80% movies, 20% music. Thanks - have a great Labor Day week-end! Ollie.

Two subs positioned well will give a flatter freq response across the room.

My room is similarly sized, and the sound improved immensely when I added a second sub. I'm committing an audio "no-no" by having two different subwoofer brands in my room, but the improvements were noticeable nontheless. Even my wife commented on how everything sounded "better".
Hsu Research is another maker of great subs.
Good luck.

In other words, you can mix/match brands without too much concern (unlike trying to mix brands with the L, R, C & Surrounds!). So you're really free to pick and choose as you see fit. The Emo XREF 12 would be a good choice. And you could also look at Home Theater Magazine's subwoofer "Top Picks" as reviewed & recommended there, see: www.hometheater.com/subwoofer-top-picksEither way, this is part of the fun of this hobby - the looking, testing, planning and getting advice from Schmucks like all of us here!

And another question .... sealed vs. ported
As mentioned below the room is 19' long, 13' wide and has 9' ceilings. I think we will be watching movies 80% of the time. I'm wondering whether there should be any thought given in the comparison of a sealed subwoofer verses a ported subwoofer? The Emotiva xref12 and the 12" svs cylinder and ported cabinets are so close in price (especialy when svs offers a 5% discount when purchasing 2 or more) , I'm wondering what a determining decision would be based on?
As far as theater progress - I'm still waiting for the 2 rear speaker locations s to be rewired - thats my fault for changing the design after the sheetrock went up!

I have heard nothing but good things about the Velodyne DD Series of subs. Their older products always crushed the competition. A used DD-15 might serve you very well. Or a DD-18 if you have the dosh...

You should check out Power Sound Audio. It was started by one of the two founders of SVS plus the former head of R&D for SVS. I've been an SVS fan for a while now (both sealed and ported), but just bought one of the first XV15's from Power Sound Audio. It's an excellent sub - high quality materials, workmanship, and performance. It's ported but controlled enough to use for 2-channel music like you would typically use a sealed sub..

I have two sealed Epik Valors and one ported Ed A7-900 and the combo is great for home theater. Sealed ones are accurate for musical passages in movies and the ported one comes alive for serious LFE passages. Its ultimately a personal choice and this was just mine.

I am thinking about upgrading my sub too....
Having the UMC-1 & USP-1 combo, may I ask how to connect two subs since there is only one sub output on both units, some kind of sub splitter?

Find a sub with a Input and output rca and then you can series the subs without changing the ohms. sent from my phone. sorry for the short response

And using the splitter will change the ohms of the sub? A splitter will change the impediance of the sub out. The low level signal hoIng to the sub, not the speaker. Most higher end sub amps will have a active splitter, allowing you to daisy chain subwoofers. sent from my phone. sorry for the short response

I'm going the Behringer DCX 2496 route. One line goes in, up to six lines go out to your subs, and with full crossover control, eq, time alignment, etc.

Well, I guess I was suffering the fog of jet-lag. I didn't think about this enough but it is really quite simple. The UMC-1 has 2 sub outputs (an XLR balanced and an RCA) which are active at the same time. So you could use both the RCA and the balanced out (with an XLR->RCA converter such as the one below). click image for details
