Hi Guys After getting my UMC-1 I started to complete my HT set-up, for my mains I’ve the Dynaudio Special 25s powered with a Bryston 4BSST (500 watts 4ohms) and used my Dynaudio Contour 1.3MKIIs powered with the amp section with a Bryston B60r but once I added a the Dynaudio Contour center I’ve been trying a few different combination last of which was one channel of a Bryston 2BLP pro (100 watts 4ohms). Sounded ok but my gut feeling was 100 watts and 500watts was not quite a level playing field for the fronts so I was looking for a more powerful Bryston amp for the center "] "], problem was I needed a low profile amp to fit the set-up and except for their Power-pacs there are none. To make a long story short thought I’d give Emotiva a shot seeing I’m using the UMC-1 and just took delivery on a UPA-1 (350+ watts 4ohms), sounds great (smooth and clean) and drives the 4ohm Dyn center with no problems along side the 4BSST.

Bryston is another top notch audio company. Great warranties and close to you in Ontario too. Glad you could get a great match on an Emotiva amp.

Very nice Rob!
Right now I'm using the Focus 200c and Focus 110's with my XPA-1's while waiting for the Contours I bought to arrive. I find that even the smaller Focus speakers I'm using really get the meters jumping on the amps, Dyn's are current hogs!
Glad your enjoying the Dyn/Emo combo, I'm enjoying mine as well.

Nice to see a fellow Ian Anderson fan out there ;D As a flute player myself thought it would be a good test to evaluate the UPA-1 with a 5.1 Master Audio HD DTS music performance.

I've had the opportunity to see Tull in concert twice. Ian is a true master of his craft.

I was going to add a UPA-2 to the back wall for the surrounds but the amp is just too deep for the shelf so I’ll stay with what I have, but I now have the 2BLP pro running the surrounds and the B60 is now my head-amp running off zone 2 from the UMC-1. But I must say the UPA-1 has indeed added a bit more punch and clarity for the center channel, didn’t think it would but obviously the Dynaudio Contour Center appreciates the extra watts .

Bought in 1989, my 2BLP is long past its 20 year warranty, but it is still going strong. I took it back to my local dealer for a test last year and it still meets spec.
It now serves as the power amp in my office. Coupled with the UMC-1 in a 2 channel system.
If it ever dies, I will replace with a UPA-200 which I am sure will be equally outstanding.

Wow! Talk about a flashback! Thanks. Thanks for sharing, I was able to catch three great concerts in the 70's at the Forum in Montreal, "Aqualung", "Thick as a Brick" and a "A Passion Play".

Hi cfelliot Nice to see your 2BLP holding up, I started with a 2BLP pro a little before then 85/86 until I upped to a 3BNRB then a 3BST-and now a 4BSST. Still hasn’t changed much in thirty years, topography remains the same although they’ve continued to upgrade the internal components, yours should have the E-I core transformers as apposed to the toridal ones and they upped the watts from 50 to 60 8ohms. Was able to grab this more recent 2BLP, the right channel was fried but Bryston came through with their legendary warranty, replacing the transformer, resistors and output transistors all for the price of shipping it one way…… on a 11 year old amp! Clear as black and white.! Oh yay, so If it ever dies, ........ Send her to Bryston!

I have the toroid ones so they must have switched in the late '80s.
One question for you. Does yours have a power-up thump? Mine has ever since it was new. Minor annoyance.
Tech at dealer said the only thing that ever goes with these guys is the power supply caps, but mine was ok.

Also:
After reading this thread yesterday, I had a Tull fest while at work. I've seen the full band 3 times over the years. A couple of years ago Ian came to town with a tour called the "Orchestral Jethro Tull". Different, but great show!
In 1971 I was on a bus going from bootcamp to tech school, Texas to Mississippi. Aqualung had just come out and was played constantly during the entire trip. Great memories!

Another Tull fan here. One of my favorites is Stormy Monday Blues.
I'm retired now but it seems that for the last few years of my working life that song would play in my head as I rolled out of bed every Monday morning bright (well - not so bright in Puget Sound most days!) and early.
My other favorite flutist would be 'Sir' James Galway. Another genre altogether but a bit more relaxing than most of Anderson's stuff.
As for that guy that plays the pan flute? --- Never mind!

Hi cfelliot (or just Elliot?) Not that I've noticed on the current models, but I do remember the "power down" on my original 2BLP, my tweeters on my Celestion SL6Ss would produce a loud "PING" "PING" as the capacitors drained. Believe Bryston solved the power up thump with a soft start circuitry back in the early nineties and it could be retrofitted on earlier amps if sent into service.

Called Bryston about this. I was just curious. Their US service center is in Vermont and I drive pretty close to them a few times a year as I live in Maine. They do have a mod for this that they will do for $80 and a complete rebuild is only $200. I'm just gonna wait 'till it dies and get it rebuilt if ever needed. Way its running now I may be the one that dies first! Chuck Elliot

Chuck Elliot Hi Chuck For $80 you might as well leave it on all the time, my original 2BLP pro never had a power button so it was left on 24/7 for about 5 years or more. My newer one has a toggle for the remote on and off, so I just use that if I need to turn it off. Robert
