HI. I am new to this site. I had already decided on buying the UPA 500 come tax time, I would use this to replace the amps in my Yamaha RX-V596 (12 yrs. old)AVR. Then I got looking at the UPA 700. For a $100 mor I could buy this. I only have capabilitis for 5.1 but why sell myself short? My question is ; Does an independnt amp react like an AVR? meaning if I buy a 7ch. amp and only use 5 of them. Will th 5 ch. produce more wattage and more effeciency than the addvetised 7ch. watts?

You'll need these to connect ANY amplifier. 2. Yes, in general an amp rated at a certain wattage with seven channels driven will produce a little more power with only 5 channels driven, but don't expect it to be a lot more.

Opps, Cory Cooper beat me to it, but here's the picture. Yes, the RX-V596 does have pre outs. They are by the speaker outputs.

Running 5 channels only won't make a huge difference in power output. The amp is rated for all channels simultaneously.

Yes you will have more power output in 5 channel mode. However, it's likely not going to be more powerful than a UPA-500 5 channel output.

Thanks for the reply. I already knew about the preouts. I am running a Peavy IPR 1600 classD to my 2 subs L/R acting as pedastools for my mains. I am running a Carver TFM 55x to my mains. But my Carver has developed a cold solder joint on the left channel and keeps cutting out. So I need to retire it, atleast untill I can find and fix the problem. I wish Emotiva would show the power rating 2ch, 5ch,and7ch's driven. Maybe Home Theater mag will review it. I could only hope. I wish more people would do reviews on the UPA 500 and 700 compared to an AVR. Atleast so I could show my wife as I am having a hard time convincing her. My self included. Thanks, Doug

The 2 ch power output for the UPA-500 was 160 watts X2 @ 4 ohms. I assume the UPA-700 is very similar.

I am assuming (Oops theres that word) That the 700 will be a little bit more cosidering the larger transformer and added capasidance 60,000 vs 40,000. It should be more efficient anyway. This is my theory anyway. Im not sure, thats why I did this post.
