Hi Jim
JFYI, this week thought I’d try my XPA-200 once more up front now that I have the attenuators, the benefits were the same as previously noted with my Bryston 4BSST. This also had a similar a effect when playing music at much lower volumes; but basically getting the volume control on the USP-1 as high as possible, 12 – 2 o’clock being the sweet spot, takes the overall sound up several notches so that very good becomes excellent. Obviously this is not a problem with vinyl but IMHO highly recommended for the UPS-1 with most line level sources.

I too have USP-1 and found it has touchy volume control. I experiment with attenuator 12db and I place them between preamp and amp and did not like the effect. It made the sound soft and the treble lack the bite. I place them between the source and preamp and I got a awesome result. I get higher volume plus it did not made the sound soft.

Just installed my USP-1 on Monday and based on the advice on this thread I too installed 12db attenuators between the XDA-1 and the pre. Now I can hit 11 o'clock before it begins to open up. Loving 2-channel all over again -- much better than just the UMC-1 for 2 channel.
