Looking to see best bang for buck...
Connecting to Onkyo TX706 AVR Speakers: HSU-15 Hybrid (with VTF-15 sub)
Do i really need the 5 channels, or can i get by with the front 3 by amp, and surround by AVR? thanks

If you can afford the XPA-5, buy it. If money is tight, go with the XPA-3 and let the AVR power the remaining 2 channels.
And do not hesitate to buy a gently used XPA-5 to save some bux, they are well-built and should last decades...

IMO, I'd just save up until I could afford the XPA-5.

The XPA -3 is at a great price right now and it really made a big difference in my system. That said, I exchanged it for an XPA-5 10 days later. Don't get me wrong, I loved the 3 but just couldn't help wondering what the surrounds would be like if they had the same power.
