Just got my UPA-1s last night, hooked them up worked fine. Turned it on today and one of my speakers had horrible feedback as soon as the amp kicked on and blew up the tweeter on my LSi15 amp smells like burning electronics and my LSi15 sounds very flat now

Did you push your amp to the limit? Clipping is what destroy tweeter. If you exceed the power rating on them for extended period of time, the voice coil will fail due to heat. Can you take a picture of those burnt tweeter?

Can you take a picture of those burnt tweeter? The volume was barely audible, as soon as the amp clicked on the speaker just went nuts. My onkyo was at like -50. I can take a picture of the tweeter but there doesn't appear to be any visible damage, it just doesn't work anymore.

Are your speaker still under warranty? If not, I would suggest open the speaker terminal and look at the crossover. There is a resistor (white ceramic resistor) on the tweeter that is known of low wattage and burn when push with high power.

I was about to point out possible user error (like an accidental short of the two wires) but looking at your sig, I realized you've probably been around the block enough time to figure that out. Sorry to hear about your tweeter. I hate when stuff goes wrong in my system.

are you positive it would be amp related, seems odd mine never gave me a hint of trouble but I do get those weird high pitch noises and such with my XDA-1 using optical at times but has never done any damage.

Yeah everything was working fine last night and today when I turned it on, as soon as that amp clicked on it instantly made a horrendously loud sound on my left channel only and the sound was a constant volume regardless of what level my onkyo was set to, it was at like -50 when I first turned it on but I turned it all the way down right away and the left channel was still making that aweful noise. Also the amp that was powering that channel smells terrible now.
Moved the speakers back to my onkyo and they work fine less the dead tweeter.

Here's what can you do to troubleshoot to determine if its crossover or tweeter. Remove the dead tweeter and put it on the other speaker and see if its the tweeter. Many assume its the tweeter when the crossover is the culprit.

Polk Has excellent customer service and most likely they will send you a tweeter and install it yourself but you have to ship the old one back to them.

I just sent you long winded explaination of what I suspect you just experienced. I do not suspect the amps as I had run them on no less than 4 sets of speakers with ZERO problems. Those Polks are known to have sub-par crossover components in them. Do a search and you will see other users with the same problems. I have the next 2 days off and will just be packing for my upcoming move. I can bring over my AE speakers and give those a try on the amps as well as checking out the Polks. Shouldn't be a problem. Let me know!

That sucks. Hope ya figure it out. I see you stated that you had some weird noise coming from the amp left channel when you turned it on?

the instant the UPA-1 on the left channel kicked on it was a horrendously loud noise coming from that speaker, the volume knob on the onkyo had no effect at all on it (even with it turn ALL the way down). that UPA-1 smells like seriously burnt electronics now.

will do, the upa-1 that I believe to be the culprit is sitting with me in my computer room and still smells horribly. the other amp and speakers in the other room don't so I believe this one is the culprit.
I know everyone's initial reaction is that I gave it too much power but I can assure you that is not the case.

Damm da bad luck blingsay!..both are blown?..about the only thing I could think of that would have cause something like that would be and this is a maybe I am going on is...a Cap or a Transistor on the rail blew? maybe a resistor?anyways if the amp is bad EMO will take care if it for you. Please keep us posted. But you did say you heard a feedback from your left speaker?Hope nothing was touching like a lose speaker wire maybe? But then EMO amps have a protech circuit.Just try too help out Brother is all.And then Maybe when the crossover blew it sent a really bad "Negative feedback too your amp. There has been a "Resistor" in the LSi's that has blown on many a Polk speakers in the LSi line....I just read Golden Eyes's post he is correct on what he said that is the "Resistor" that has cause many a headache and most "Mod" the crossover cause of that reason.I would bet my last buck that when it blew it sent a "High Negative"or maybe a "Positive"and that for sure isn't good feed back too your amp and well that smell is not a good thing.Maybe shoot Mr.Lonnie an email I am sure he can help you find out what the cause was.Good luck Bro.
