I had a friend pick up a upa 7 to run 3 zones of whole house audio split with y connectors from 2 channel out of marantz pre, he is running to russound volume controls. After a few hours of listening the amp goes into protect mode, we rewired to a replaced vc, now it is failing from another, are we just having bad luck with russound vc or do they not play well? We replaced 4 already ! This sucks

try replacing the cables and plug amp directly into the wall

Cables have been replaced and so have multiple vc and wires to them, I think he has it on a strip so we will try that thanks. It is really weird that it is killing vcs

Not sure how you have the volume control wired but you may have some impedance issues that could overload the amps which results in going to protect mode.
Need more info on how everything is setup/wired and also what speakers you are using.

2 wires from amp to vc than to niles outdoor speakers on one The other two wired the same then to niles in ceiling very basic

First off, putting the output of an amp through ANY volume control between the amp and the speaker is a VERY BAD IDEA. You are putting a resistor or variable transformer (usually a resistor) between the amplifier and the speaker. The volume control burns up power, and totally ruins the damping factor - in other words, it will ruin the bass, and to different degrees depending on where you set it. Besides that, with our amps, if the wiper on the volume control is in the least crunchy or noisy, and you move it while the amp is on, it will probably trip the protect circuitry (just like any other faulty speaker or speaker cable). Volume controls between the amp and the speaker (ANY of them) do not play well with serious audio. Sorry. Yes volume controls belong on the line level side, not the speaker level side. What sort of loads are you placing on the amp combining the variable resister and the loudspeaker(s)? Can you even know what the net impedance is?

Yes, I totally agree with both of those posted above. I played around with the same kind of setup long… long ago and to prevent damage to the amps the Volume control added impedance to the speakers. This of course considerably ruin the sound quality; but it will work until you burned up the components on the VC (and may even damage the amps--good thing most have protect mode), and how long will that take depends on your setup (specs/ratings).
