OOPS! I just noticed I forgot to include a recent review of the KEF IQ speakers. Go to AFFORDABLE$$$$AUDIO (Sept 2007 issue). They do a good job going over the KEF IQ7 and do a much better job detailing its attributes than I can. Good reading.

Somewhat off topic but here goes, I am wondering how many people have actually purchased the EMO speakers. I am seriously considering a purchase to place in my garage. The problem is, it gets quite hot in there during the summer and I am wondering if this would have an effect on the speaker seals. And one last thing, am I going to get the surround effect if my rear speakers (5.1) are mounted on the ceiling above and slightly behind the listening position? Room size is about 21' x 18'. Thanks.

Rears shouldn't be a problem in this regard. As far as the heat...what temperature do you consider quite hot?

We could be talking upper 90 - 100 degrees.

Heat and dust can be hard on (electrical) equipment, but your speakers should be fine. The surround placement of up/behind should also be fine.

You should be fine within that temperature range...some garages can hit 120-130 degrees and I would be hesitant to say that would be okay, but you shouldn't have nay problems with the speakers.

Do these speakers have holes in the bottom for attachment of stands?

Do these speakers have holes in the bottom for attachment of stands? No holes. They are pretty heavy for what they are and are quite solid. I have mine on some cinder block stands I made and they don't move at all.

Doug, Now that you've moved this thread from the depths, and its been several months since you bought your speakers, do you still like them?
I'm still planing on building a HT I think I'll use the 6.2s and 6.3 (center) with the 2 sets of ERD's for surround. I'll be moving my LPA to the HT, do you think the LPA is going to be enough? Its rated pretty high in 4 ohms and all of Emo's speakers are 4 ohm's right?
BTW where have you been lately, I haven't seen very many posts by you.

Its rated pretty high in 4 ohms and all of Emo's speakers are 4 ohm's right? BTW where have you been lately, I haven't seen very many posts by you. I still am amazed every time I turn on the system and hear the Emotiva speakers. Whether I'm watching movies, listening to music, or playing video games, the sound just never wears on me. I was curious, like you, if the sound would get to me after a while. My old Klipsch speakers sounded great at first, but really wore on me as time went on. The Emotiva speakers are amzing in that they provide more detail than the rather forward Klipsch speakers I had, but do not get "tinny" or bothersome to listen to. I will be considering replacing the ERM's in my room with the 6.5" models when they are available. The current ones are great and I honestly have no complaints...I just remember the 6.5" units having a very slight edge when I heard them at Dan's. What I am really looking forward to is the ERC-1 and the dual sub package though. Can't wait to get both the products into the mix! I think the LPA-1 would be fine as far as power is concerned. I will mention though that the X-series and the MPS amps do take things to the next level though. The time I noticed this the most is when the LMC-1 was paired with the LPA-1, then the MPS-1. I thought the LMC-1 was a great processor when hooked to the LPA-1, but didn't realize just how good it was until it was connected to the MPS-1. Everything opened up with the MPS-1 and it simply came alive. Most people thought the amp was the best part of the UL combo, but I have to disagree and say the LMC-1 was the winner. The LPA-1 was/is still a great amp, just not as detailed and open as Emotivas other amps. I have been very busy with work lately. The ecomony and budget cuts have greatly affected the school district I work for. I have had to take on a lot more repsonsiblities myself. We are continuing to move forward with technology in our district, but lack the number of people we truly need to support it. Things are starting to slow down a bit for me now. I just have to get Office 2007 pushed out to ~ 5000 computers before winter break and update our Citrix farm of 146 servers, then things should be pretty calm until summer when we plan to migrate from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. I should have a couple weeks off over X-mas and am really looking forward to it and getting caught up on the rest of my life again. I still really need to find a good way to set up my 2-channel rig in my HT room. This will be my foremost project while on vacation. I'll have to fly Lonnie in or something ;D

Thanks Doug for taking the time to update your feelings regarding the ERM's. I appreciate it. I'm getting so excited. ;D
But crap now you've got me thinking about a MPS-2. In a way you suck. j/k, your awesome. ;D
Time to start saving my pennies.
*Edit, Good luck on your migrations, it can be a pain sometimes.
Thanks again.

It seems like there is always something else we want to upgrade. For me, I am very happy with the system, but feel the sub is the weakest link right now. Upgrading one thing though, can bring to light another deficiency you hadn't noticed before though.
I think the MPS-2 is the holy grail of amps in my budget...and probably a ways beyond for that matter. The speakers are definitely an eye opener as well and just can't be compared to anything near their price range.

Day One Review as promised.
Let me simply write this: I will not be returning these surround speakers for a refund. If your surround sound system is a kiddie HTiB, you can look elsewhere. These speakers are for grown people
Software in use for critic listenning:
CD's
Earth, Wind and Fire (All 'n All) Natalie Cole (Still Unforgettable) Take 6 (The Standard)
SACD's Herbie Hancock (Head Hunters) Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane (New Jazz)
DVD's
The Incredibles Star Wars-The Empire Strikes Back
Blu-ray Baraka 3:10 To Yuma Eagle Eye
Audyssey program in my Integra DTC-9.8 came up a little short on the sides for my taste, but with a 3db left/3.5db right boost: The SPL problem was fixed. Now we're cookin' with gas
The ERD-1's are nothing short of fantastic. If Emo's other speaker offerings are even close to their surrounds in SQ, they may need an even bigger building then the one they just moved into.
Track 4---Windmills Of Your Mind, by Take 6 is my favorite speaker torture test. These six guys sing without the aid of musical instruments and expose poorly made speakers right away. The ERD-1's are coming through with flying colors. The reason why I selected this particular song is because PLIIx Music Mode is not my primary choice for critical listenning when it comes to music, but I do enjoy the CODEC with certain musicians. Obviously, this would be one of the only ways to test side surrounds when it comes to music. Another reason why I selected this CD is the transfer. As you know, some disc really suck. This CD is one of the very best.
The Incredibles being THX optimized, and with the 80hz roll-off of the ERD's, made for a good test. Absolutely no distortion during the chapters that pretty much won this cartoon a Oscar. I can't give a better compliment then that.
7.1 CODEC from "3:10 To Yuma" has lost me a few friends over the last year when I advised them that their surround systems were no where near as good as they thought they were. Sorry if that sounds rude, but they asked and this is what I do for a living these days. Anyway; To be honest, I had never heard of Vance until Emotiva started marketing their speakers. I read up afterwards...and I know now...but I had never heard of the man. After listenning to the ERD's during this movie, I would gladly buy any speaker this guy designs sight unseen.
SACD's are another story. Direct radiating speakers will work better as surrounds in most cases, but the ERD's still sounded excellent. I'm not going to flip the switch in the back of the speakers every time I listen to multichannel audio, so I'm very satisfied with the trade off.
All and all: What a steal! I have installed many a surround speakers that have elevated system cost dramatically. None of them were better than the ERD's. Not only am I thrilled with my purchase, I would gladly advise anyone else to buy them. If you don't like these surround speakers, then you can't hear worth a damn so it won't matter what you buy.

Hi Doug,
how far is the seating distance from you and the ERD-1 surrounds? can you localize the surrounds or the speakers really disappear?
I'm interested in getting a pair for surrounds, not surround back.
thx

I'm interested in getting a pair for surrounds, not surround back. thx I'm using a pair of erds as surrounds..and a pair of Polk RTi 28s as back surrounds. The sound is enveloping and it seems to come from different places depending on the source material. That's the way it should work.
