I've recently expanded my desktop headphone system to include a used UPA-2 driving PSB Imagine B speakers. While I love the sound, I'd like a few more Hz at the bottom. Can I use the RCA out connections on the UPA-2 to drive a subwoofer? I'm presuming this is more desirable than using a speaker level connection.
The owners manual is a bit vague on the RCA output. Is this simply a "Y" from the preamp or will it switch on and off with the amp?

I have a UPA-2. It is meant for daisy chaining multiple amps together. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use this option for a subwoofer. Never tried it though.

Only thing about running a fullrange signal is you are depending on the quality of the filters in the sub. I tried running full range to my Empires and used the built in crossovers, and the result was bad to say the least. You might want to add a Minidsp or similar between the UPA and sub amp....

Fair enough. I'm using a Woo Audio WA2 as my preamp, very minimal preamp connectivity, but the OTL tube sound is exactly what I want in a desktop stystem and I'm willing to work with it's limitations. The subwoofer will be an Outlaw M8. I'm not opposed to using an external crossover; but I'll give the built in one a listen first. I was mainly concerned with signal levels and not blowing anything.

I'd reconsider your "subwoofer" choice. The Outlaw M8 won't even reach one octave lower than the PSB Imagine B. Do yourself a favor and spend more money and get a real subwoofer. The $500 SVS SB-1000 is a great performer and isn't really any bigger than that pretender.
