Would love to know if Gumby sounds different in Balanced vs SE. Some claim huge differences some claim, not so much. My thinking is those highly efficient Pendragons would show the difference if any.

I'll test that theory when (if) I get a balanced power amp in to try.

I'll test that theory when (if) I get a balanced power amp in to try. I have never run anything Balanced so I wouldn't know, but if the Gumby sounds different from XLR would changing this only from DAC to Pre show a difference? (Assuming the pre to amp connection isn'5. Limiting the sound). I would think that it could.

Well in my experience, if you have a balanced power amp that is reasonably good, you are going to want a preamp that is transparent enough. I haven't encountered a whole lot that are.

Eagerly awaiting your impressions on Gumby! I suspect I will be going the MB dac route at some point, but I also suspect I would have to go for the Gumby to hear a significant upgrade, coming from the DC-1. I would love to hear anyone's impressions comparing the DC-1 vs Gumby. Enjoy the new DAC!

OK - garbulky - The Gungnir is hot to trot. I know Sundays are iffy for you, but... The only impediment to best performance is that the Martin-Logans are boxed for return & their (huge) cardboard crates are still in the living room. They DO affect both imaging & bass... With your help, we could slide them out of the way, though... Cheers.

Gar, As I mentioned to Boom, bring your UPA-2 over. I am very curious about opinion with the Pendragons and a lower power Emotiva amp? I noticed very little difference when I moved to the XPA-5. Chuck

Another visit to the B'zilla's. Coming off the back end of a rather s**ty day, what a breath of fresh air to be a welcomed guest at the B'zillas. Let me tell you if you ever knew these two, they are just fantastic people. Really cheered up my evening, that's for sure. So today, B'zilla had spent time dancing his pretty green ladies back and forth. And looks like he landed in some seriously good spots because it sounded good! A big part of that was the Sherwood garage sale find he got. Apparently these are on sale brand new for very little cash. I find it hard to believe the price he told me at monoprice but apparently they are the same unit. Anyway, long story short, the Sherwood amp, if that's really how much they are going for is an outrageous steal for the price. Though I haven't had much time with it and they are driving 8 ohm high efficiency speakers, these amps ticked some very nice boxes. From a top to bottom tone that felt good, to very quick dynamics to a large detailed soundstage, this amp ticked the most important box. It produced music. Chuckienut will probably say....of course it produced music, what else do you ask it to?! Well...when I say music, I mean, it better satisfy when playing music otherwise I'm going to say something! And it did. If these things were way more expensive, like say $2000, I would be more critical, but there really isn't any point is there? This engrossed me in music goodness for the entirety of my stay. And I am not an easy sell. B'zilla who has lived with this amp for some time now did mention some caveats....there's only so much power on tap, and it does better with easier to drive 8 ohm, efficient speakers, and a certain frequency range (not strong on bass). But whatever it is, he had experimented on his subs, speaker placement all fine tuned to that amp and it showed. The music drew me in. He played a CD from the piano guys and 6 minutes in (to the same song!!) I realized....wow it's been 6 minutes? Because I remained engrossed in good music the whole way. My take on the Sherwood is that honestly at its price range (if that really is - is it really?!?) it should be illegal. When you sell an amp for that little, there's only so much that you can do with it. And I guess I should say gold medal for design and choice would be a fair assessment. Whoever figured it out knew what the heck they were doing is all I can say! The sound lay on the cool side in the mid range. By which I mean you wouldn't run around calling it warm in the mid range.I told B'zilla, I have heard several amps run on the cool side of the mid range and you know what? I didn't like them. They had glaring errors to them. This amp did not. As I mentioned good design at a ridiculous price point. It had a sound that when put together worked which is more than I can say for the pure junk you can find at that price point. Way down deep, when integrated with the dual power sound audio subs had nice dynamics on the drum. Though not necessarily possessing huge amounts of fullness and warmth in the lower mid range, it produced a HUGE sound with slam and clarity producing internal squeels of joy! I told B'zilla, my Axioms may have soundstage but it doesn't do the "BIIIIG" vertical open sound of the Pendragons. Speaking of the Pendragons. They sound different! At the beginning the treble wasn't quite to my taste, but maybe it has been oodles of time or what....the tweeter has evened out quite a lot! It now produces a far more realistic tone - my biggest critique of the Pendragon. During this session, I did not hear any tweeter shenanigans. I guess speaker break in simply takes quite a bit longer on the Pendragons. Somebody mentioned the term 150 hours and I felt man that's kind of a LOT of time for a speaker to play. But it appears these Pendragons have settled down in to some good sounding transducers now bringing good tone to the party! I think I have finally heard enough of the Pendragons to say .... yes it's a speaker you would want to audition. However, be patient with and give it time to give it your best. Afterwards it was on to the real party. 3 dimensions! And by that I mean trying out B'zillas 4k 3d tv! Well needless to say it did quite well on Avatar, a real demo disc if I ever saw one. The whole way through was a thrill ride. His tv was capable of better differentiated and darker black levels than mine was. His 3d glasses also exhibited less cross talk than my unit. This was good praise as I had only seen two sets that actually outdid my unit in overall picture quality in a significant manner worthy of upgrade - a Sasmsung Quantum dot unit and the phenomenal LG OLED TV's series. The Best part of the evening imo was watching all those action bits on Avatar! It really does do better in 3d! Thanks again for the fun evening with friends. Until next time!

The Sherwood RX 4109 stereo receiver is now discontinued & no longer available new. Selling used on eBay for about $50. Original list price was about $300, but when they were liquidating the remainder of the discontinued stock, I saw them (new in box) for $45.
And, as always, it's a pleasure to host fellow Lounge members.

" It produced music. Chuckienut will probably say....of course it produced music, what else do you ask it to?! " Brilliant! I suppose if Gar ever reviews a vacuum cleaner for the Lounge he will say that it sucks. We came back from Japan on a Bow-wing 787. That plane flies. (I wouldn't make this comment but I've flown on the 787 for hundreds of hours so far. Part of the time I was wearing a blindfold.)

Hi Chuckie -
So glad that your trip was a safe & happy one! I've not yet been on a 787, but would love to have the experience (but not in coach...). Hoping you & Noriko have a great 2017 - Boom

I too have ridden the bow-wing model you mentioned. You will be happy to know that unlike your weak attempt at objectivity, I have worn the blindfold a 100% of the time. Though due to protests from the stewards, I was unable to wear just my towel. But nevertheless, I pressed on albeit with pants. With the blindfold on, my eyes had no way to fool me. It felt IDENTICAL to riding in my trusty car, the Reliant Robin. So from now on when I travel overseas I do it by car.

Hoping you & Noriko have a great 2017 - Boom Thanks Boom, but since both of us are officially medically disabled we got to sit in the seats at the front of the economy/coach section right behind the partition, both ways. Same width seat but lots of extra leg room and we could stand up and stretch our legs right at our seats (no blood clots ). It was very nice as I'm 6-4 and my knees usually touch the seat in front of me.

We came back from Japan on a Bow-wing 787. .......... I too have ridden the bow-wing model you mentioned........... I wonder how many hours? Maybe you have lots of hours, but as you say about DAC's you have to fly the 787 for many hours until you become intimate with it (well not that intimate, but the ANA flight attendants are tempting, that's why I have to wear the blindfold). Each flight to Japan (prepaid for both of us) is about 19 hours round trip on the 787. Times many trips over the last xxx years since the 787 started on this trip.

It's fair to say God I hate flying!! I've earned it! Why? For business? In general terms what do you do for work? Noriko in the last 17 years has over one million miles with four different airlines. I have maybe 250,000 miles. I have only flown business once (gratus United Airlines) ..... I actually slept on an airplane for the first time in my life! I did fly first class years ago when I had a real job.
