I admit that I was excited about this technology early on. I upgraded to a 3D set as early as I could and our family owns about 7 3D Blu Ray Disc. But, we never use 3D at home! My eight year old liked it at first but now request that we watch the 2D Disc only. I walked into a store yesterday and they only had a few 3D disc for sale. This is a very open ended question, What went wrong with 3D in the home? Maybe you guys use it and Im the odd man out!

I wonder that too. If I had to guess it was the lack of easily accessible material and next being convenience.

I think if the glasses had been passive from the start it would have been much better. Plus, with HDMI, then BD, then 3D, coming out with only a few years between, I think people got tired of buying new gear to keep up with the newest trend. I know that when I bought my first large screen TV in 04, HDMI was just coming out. When BD came out a few years later I had to buy a new TV and AVR/processor to be able to make it work. When 3D came out, I was going to have to buy a new processor and a new TV (it is 3D ready, but to upgrade it to handle a spec it wasn't designed for was going to be several $$$) and a new BD player. I think they killed the goose that laid the golden egg at that point; but wait, there's more!!! Now we have 4k coming down the pike! That's going to require (when it comes out) a new source player, a new processor or AVR, and a new TV! For people buying cheap stuff at WalMart maybe it's easy to toss stuff in the land fill every couple of years. But, when you've got several thousands of dollars wrapped up in perfectly good equipment along with kids, a car note, and a house note, throwing that stuff out starts to hurt the pocket book. Look for 3D to make a resurgence in 5 to 10 years as more people upgrade to BD (and with it, 3D capable players) and replace their TVs with 3D TV (with passive glasses like what you use at the theater). Once their is a deeper permeation of this technology, then the demand will follow.

I have never used BD even once. Nor have I had any interest in 3D. If it was with out the goggles, I might have had some interest......

I personally think 3d looks great on the big 40ft screen at the movie theater, but when you shrink it down to a 50"or 60" flat panel it just seems too gimmicky to me. I was never impressed when I've demoed it in several stores. Add to that the extra expense and the glasses and I think that pretty much killed it.

There is no need to upgrade the processor or receiver. Just get a Bluray player with dual HDMI outputs. I recently picked up clearance top end Panasonic and Pioneer Elite Bluray players with dual outputs for $200 and $150 each respectively for Xmas gifts. I have a LG TV that uses passive glasses and it works fine. There are plenty of movies, but a lot fewer than I expected.

I don't do theaters (by choice)so I like the 3D at home. My mits was 3D ready in 2009 purchased the adapter and a sony 3D BD in 2010 for under $300, added all this to a 2004 AVR with out HDMI. I have 25 3D movies that I own and a buddy who is into 3D as well so we loan each other movies. I don't mind the glasses and have found some new ones that I'm going to pick up that look comfortable.
On a side note: What I like about this hobby is you don't have to buy everything at once to make things work, one can just upgrade slowly and enjoy what one has. I bought a new AVR 7 months ago and just replaced my sony 3D and OPPO 83 with the OPPO 103 for an all in one player.

How else was everyone going to upgrade their HDMI 1.3 gear to HDMI 1.4 gear if it wasn't for the hype of 3D. Now the masses will rush to upgrade their 1.4 AVRs to 2.0 for 4K.

Especially when the 3D is done right like it was for Avatar eg. Conversions are usually pretty bad and I avoid buying them. The glasses we have are like wearing sunglasses and some people wear those all the time. They're way more comfortable than my reading glasses. But hey, if it goes away we'll survive.

Not this guy, I viewed the demos with the local sales reps and we both agreed that the colors are brighter! But, from 6 to 8 feet away you can't tell enough of a difference.

What brand of glasses do you have? I was looking at these ones from Dimensional Optics.

I haven't found anything appreciably better that I would want to spend the money on.
