Actually, so far anybody that has received a 'refurb' set of speakers from polkdirect, has only ever reported them looking as if they were brand new. Including myself who bought several sets (different models) that way. You would not be able to convince me that they weren't new. It's my opinion that they simply applied a refurb sticker on the outside of the box. At least nobody has reported otherwise yet. YMMV.
IMHO, Buy refurb from polkdirect with confidence. Like you said-Full 5 year warranty to boot? (which has been confirmed by Polk CS) Simply can't be beat--of course you still have to consider shipping those beasts and state tax (if applicable) as well.

Polk and Harman both use Ebay to dump inventory, inferring that it is refurb and/or open box. This way, they don't get tagged for selling below retail. The speakers are new. Also, at the end of the warranty cycle for the prior models, they will sell off their replacement stock. This is the stock they hold in order to replace a bad speaker within warranty. I think it's the best way to buy them! Well, other than Craigslist, for me. I bought the Polk Monitor 70's, the matching sub and the CC2 center speaker from a guy for $200 total. Not a mark on them. I happened to see the ad first and call immediately. Needless to say, I ran out of the house and sped over there before he came to his senses. ;D

Originally I thought it was just so that they could blow out excess stock while at the same time lnmiting thier warranty to 180 days. There was confusion early on about what the warranty coverage was as there were conflicting statements on the ebay website as well as conflicting statement some buyers were getting from Polk CS. But they 100% clarified it only recently (Dec?), that speakers have the full original warranty.
However the 'new - refurb status' may only be on the speakers. I bought an iSonic HD Radio list as a refurb, and it was not brand new, but still for the price it was good enough.
