Thanks for a great write up with the basics included, Boom!
And I especially appreciate the report back on your cable tests. Good info, man!

I like this thread. So I have a question. What's the difference in doing all that work you did vs what I did? Performance wise? I bought something like these, put individual wires in each one (12 gauge speaker wire), then just stacked them at the source end. At the speaker end they all plug in individually with regular banana clips. Understand? www.parts-express.com/wbt-0645w-stackable-angled-banana-connector-white--093-541

I've not tried it. My experience is that I just haven't heard any differences in interconnects. I've tried a variety, and to my ears - no audible change. Therefore, I buy inexpensive and reliable brands & leave well enough alone.

I must admit I have not noticed any difference myself, just curious. Thanks for your reply.

I've made some interconnects and found that different solders have a different sound.
I've settled on WBT because the bass is deeper and more powerful without any coloration. Siltech solder seems to curtail the bass - this is probably a good choice if you want to tame some of the bass in your system.
Cardas sells bulk wire at different gauges, solder and connectors. The wire has the characteristic Cardas sound. They're not neutral to my ears, they're romantic and warm. Cardas gear takes a long, long time to break in.
I've also found that the banana plugs have a sound. I'm using Audioquest bananas now - and the speakers seem to have a lot more high frequency information than when I connect via bare wire.
Has anyone tried Emotiva's speaker wire?

They're not neutral to my ears, they're romantic and warm. I guess that's why my cables continue to rebuff my advances. I need to spend more time romancing my cables and less time expecting them to just put out on command. Has anyone tried Emotiva's speaker wire? I've owned a 6 meter pair of Emotiva's X-series speaker cables for 1.5 years. Excellent materials and build quality. No complaints with sound quality either. However, since we're both on very different wavelengths when it comes to discussing cable performance, cable break-in, and how cable material, solder, etc. influence sound, I'm going to be hold my tongue about the rest of your post.

The only really significant difference that I've been able to hear in speaker wires is braided or "Litz" styles vs. plain wires. To my ears, the braided styles always seem to be softer in the treble. I've currently got some braided 1980's Ixos wires and some Kimber Kable 12TC wires. I don't use them. I like the Blue Jeans cables better. That said, I think Mr. DYohn has the right of it - the best wires are bare wires (could apply to women also... - Joking, dear - just joking...).
Since I can't hear or measure any difference between the bare wires and the Blue Jeans welded bananas/spades, I'll opt for the convenience of the terminals, thanks.
Other people hear better than I can and say they hear different things. Power to them - Were I younger (with more sensitive ears), it might matter more. For my needs, thanks, I'll do very well with what I've got.
