Since the day we heard that Emotiva is coming out with tube components, I have been watching this forum with bated breath, hoping some information would be forthcoming. Since the departure of Bob Carver, it seems everything has come to a standstill. Nothing has been posted here for months.
I'm not saying we need a day to day report, but some information once or twice a month would be reasonable, especially those who are anxiously waiting Emotiva tube products. I would at least like to know where the company stands as of today regarding production, and a ballpark timeline anything would be ready. Are we looking/hoping for anything in 2014 or later? I have some questions that I would like to have addressed.
Are there any plans on the table to offer DIY kits for those who would like to build their own?
Will Emotiva be offering tubes, or should we source these elsewhere?
In reagards to preamps, will there be a phono, headphone, or phono/headphone? If there will be a phono pre, will it be for both mm and mc?
It would help if we had some idea of price structure. This would be helpful for the newcomers who are coming into tubes for the first time. If the products are going to be $1500 and up, at least those who cannot afford one would be better off looking elsewhere.
This post is not meant to be bashing Emotiva, quite the contrary. This thread is being posted with the hopes someone from Emotiva will at least give us some news, any news about the new tube products, and some idea as when would also be helpful, especially if we have to start saving our money. I hope their will be a bottom tier for those of us who live on very limited finances, but still have the opportunity of owning a very good "bang for your buck" product.
Please accept this in the true meaning it was intended. Any assitance, news, or information will be greatly appreciated by those who are your biggest fans!!

Dan touched on the tube products during the podcast last week.
I sincerely doubt you will get more updates than the podcasts or the rare posting teasing new products. Emotiva has learned from prior experience - posting too much info damns them for not meeting expectations. Not posting enough damns them for being too secretive. Being too secretive is by far the lesser of the two evils.
They are developing the gear. That's good enough for now. When they are ready to present more details, they will.

2) No plans to offer any sort of DIY solution that I'm aware of. In fact, Big Dan did post on this subject many months ago. His feeling is the company would be opening a huge can of worms with any DIY product. I agree. Don't look for a DIY solution, tube or otherwise, from Emotiva. |

Emotiva would be making a huge mistake by trying to serve the DIY world. I do not think they will make that mistake.

5) Emotiva is all about value. I have no idea what final price(s) will be, but they'll be competitive for sure. I'd say Emotiva is about power and value. That combination has me salivating over the possibilities of their tube products. |

View Attachment Yes the dream is still alive but the reality of the future appears that Emo is busy with consumer and value oriented products aimed for more mainstream. For the record, I'm stating my opinion based upon the releases and podcasts, not bashing or criticizing at all. As much as I was hopeful about tube products coming from Emo, I also realize that in the end they are a company operating with the intention of earning a profit. They did a wonderful job on the XPR-1s and as much as i love mine, I realize that serving the nitch might mean missing the opportunity to sell more profitable units. IMHO they did gain a lot of credibility in the audio world by releasing the reference line as the XPRs are holding their value well on the secondary market, unlike some other brands. Having the audio virus I will always encourage Emotiva to aim products for the serious audiophiles of the world. In the meantime tubes have always given me pleasing results. Personally my first intro to tubes was an inexpensive product by Musical Fidelity called the x10-D in the mid to late 90s. For $200 bucks it really warmed up the output of my CD and I was hooked to the luscious warmth and delicate mids/highs while enjoying a substantial increase in the bass. The effect was so proud that 10 years later I bought a matching tube X-PRE that was heavily modded with better tubes, black gate caps and vishay resistors, etc. I still love that preamp. Would really love to dump some money into a blue LED Emotiva Reference Tube Preamplifier. If the audio Genies are listening, that is my wish #1! Until then I'm looking at the Audio Research Ref 3 which even used seems very promising. |

Now, If I were to build one from a kit, I'm assuming you would recommend upgrading every part available and make sure the on light indicator illuminated a nice blue hue! Emo blue only and they are only available used. Was reading a lot of comparisons between Mc and the Audio Research Reference 3. Everyone that has owned both seemed to prefer the AR by a strong margin. Personally I have no hands on experience with AR. And I can't imagine myself trying to assemble a kit so I have to find a factory assembled solution. |

OK jeff, lets assume a very reasonable cost to have the kit assembled, for a few extra bucks Id spend it for better parts, wouldn't you?

I figure they will get there Gen 3 XPA, Emersa, Airmotiv's and BasX out there and rule the Amplification, Stereo, A/V, speaker market for awhile. I do not see Emotiva stopping there. It takes a lot of time to bring Audio gear to market. |

I will not rule out the 300 watt mono blocks when it comes to tube amps. Solid State mono blocks can take a hike ! I've had a bunch of amps and my current one for two channel listening is my first tube one - a 60 wpc VTA ST-120 designed by Bob Latino. I have to say it has all the power I need. Granted I don't listen at ear bleeding levels but the sound from this amp is silky and effortless. No strain whatsoever. |
